You'll Never Walk Alone (from "Carousel") - Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II
#med (Music.Every.Day)
This is video 444 of my video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--learning and posting a video of new piano music (almost) every day! (I'm counting videos instead of days now!)
Today is Gospel Sundaaayy! This is not a typical hymn, but it certainly could have been one. It's one of the classic, uplifting, positive anthems, like "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from "The Sound Of Music", another Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Today's video is "You'll Never Walk Alone" from "Carousel", written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

    Very nice. I've played this one about a year ago. It's lovely. I read Rodgers autobio, informative but also pretty self serving. Lots of insight into the family, NY musicals, Lorenz Hart, Hammerstein and their daughter, etc. Covered every musical they did and some of the competitions. Lots of dishing, but very little of what folks would find unsavory about him. They ruled the musical scene for about 20 years, in NY and London. These numbers are "singable" for good reason. Ha, ha. Nice work, lovely playing, lovely player.

    Can you answer this? I can't figure out how to keep this one from coming and playing after closing it out. It comes on and plays in the background even when desktop turned off; when I turn it on, it's already playing. If I don't catch it, succeeding videos play for hours. I have looked it up but haven't found the right button to push. Not that I don't like the piece but playing over and over as prelude to many others bugs me. I can't figure it out.

      So I don't know if this is what you mean because I had this problem with my home page of google. I would click on the youtube button and it kept playing a video I had searched up awhile ago. Turns out that I had bookmarked that video instead of bookmarking youtube on it's own. I clicked on the three dots beside the shortcut and changed the link to link to youtube homepage instead of a specific video. It's also possible that you have the autoplay button and/or the play in background feature selected so that it keeps going even when you shut the application. (I do that if I want background noise when I'm sleeping in a hotel).

    Intriguiging number; don't know it but it is appealing, as is the player doing the rendition. Your hands are really busy with these little bursty riffs with a lot of fast arp work. This was very expressive, how you changed dymanmics of a sudden for variation. Was this still Brent's version? Nice work uyp the whole keyboard. Nice look, that final gaze. Was tired today; set up my new 14.6" tab; not exactly what I expected but still more than enough size improvement; I'm still tinkering around with the adjustments. Still need to add the page turn pedal, which I'm getting better with. I found and loaded a paper copy of "Scotch and Soda" by Dave Guard; hadn't seen it for 2-3 years. Fun piece. Would work well for your project. Dave was the founder of the Kingston Trio; he, separately, after leaving the group, and the Trio, without him, did it. It's definitely a jazzy blues number, which one might not expect from a folk oriented mind. It's a fave of mine, among so many of their hits. You are teriffic. Great work every day. Thank you. Enjoying it so much.

      Definitely a busy arrangement! Yes, it is still Brent's arrangements. I am getting to the point where I just point out when it's NOT Brent lol. That is a really large tablet! But I guess it's perfect as a sheet-music reading device. I think my Ipad is 12.9" -- I didn't know they made tablets up to 14.6"! Is it really heavy? Is the Scotch and Soda piece written out? I think there is a lead sheet of it in the Real Book. I'd like to spend some time playing around with lead sheets and figuring out arrangements again. Brent's given me a lot of food for thought and material that has probably sunk in from the last little while. Maybe my next project ...

    I made major upgrades to my gear set-up in the last 6 weeks. I was trying to upgrade to a Yamaha N2 but the price got away from me. Then I was stalking the Roland GP 607; which they no longer make, replaced by another model designation, for about 20% upgerisen price; heard it on a favorite channel. I took stock of what I really wanted, better and louder sound, especially in those last notes on the upper register. I could not distinguish them as pitches. All sounded the same, like a thud. I added 2 amplified stero monitors, improved the sound by 80%, got the new P-45 "B" keyboard with it's whisper quiet action. Also, just bot a used 14.6" tablet, bigger print, old eyes are not so accurate, sometimes can't distinguish between notes. That is coming from Amazon by tomorrow. Total cost is $1,300; now I have a set-up that rivals instruments in the $3,500-$5,000 range. The big lack in less expensive instruments is not the action or touch but the lack of amplified sound on board. Don't know if it's brilliant but I must say, I'm quite proud of my gambit. A lot of research and patience went into this over the last couple of years. Did not want to lay out the big bucks for the results. Happy camper, here. Side note: A week ago last Friday, I got fitted for high end hearing aids; I qualified with the VA of the US, for service back in the Punic Wars. Really, high end, no cost to me. It was past time. Those last 15 notes at the high end of the piano are actually pitches, the range of which I had lost.

    • @elenafortinmusic
      @elenafortinmusic 3 дня назад

      When I am shopping for keyboards I go for touch rather than sound. I personally prefer the Yamahas over the Rolands -- I think Yamaha has the edge on being the most "piano-like". The price definitely plays a factor though. I really liked the Technics one I had before, but I am also liking this Yamaha. I don't have to worry too much about the volume, since it mostly goes into the headset, but on the occasion that I do play it without the headset, the sound is pretty powerful! I'm glad your setup worked out for you. And hooray for the hearing ads! Thank you for your service. I am glad that you've got back the high end of the piano! There'll be an upload in the next couple of days in the high end of the piano so you can test out your new hearing aids. 🙂

    Last one of the recents I haven't seen; dnk this one either. In addition to world class hair, I love your tremolos. They're hard and you ace them, longer or as grace note embellishments. Walking bass here is fun; your fingers are straight up and down right on those walking keys. Again, who did this collection? Not jazz but a sort of bluesy, gospel, rock, vibe. Fun stuff. Your broad piano accomplishments are on humble display. All play with you. Well done, again. All this daily release stuff is at an amazing level.

    • @elenafortinmusic
      @elenafortinmusic 5 дней назад

      Haha! I don't know about "world class" hair--now and then I get tired and chop it off and grow it again. Tremolos are so fun to play--I try to make sure my hand is relaxed (it helps), and so does the twisting motion (like opening a door with a door knob). I also try to give them a bit of momentum or direction. Walking bass is one of my favourite jazz things to play. It's nice to have the left hand lay down the rhythm in a "driving, but laid back kind of way). lol. I answered somewhere else, but this collection is another one of Brent Edstrom's Jazz Piano Solos books: Soul Jazz. A lot of unknown-to-me pieces but lots of gems! It's giving me good practice playing in this style, although after hearing the originals I think my speeds are all slower. In my defence, Brent writes these crazy solos that need the slower speed to be able to enjoy!

    • @DavidMiller-bp7et
      @DavidMiller-bp7et 4 дня назад

      @@elenafortinmusic Yes, the collection goes deeper into the rep, for those less known popular numbers. "Soul" would be the right modifier, a little more bluesy than the jazz standards. Fun to watch you negotiate all of the technical demands. A nice thing is that these, like many pieces, work well with slower tempi, where one can savor the chords and other features. If you cut off that beautiful "Samson," hair, you may lose all your strength. Think about that!

    • @elenafortinmusic
      @elenafortinmusic 4 дня назад

      @@DavidMiller-bp7et I had to look up what "soul" is considered to be. It's one of those genres that you think you know what it means, and then when you have to describe it to someone, you figure out that you don't know how to describe it! From the internet: Genres grouped under the "soul" banner include rhythm and blues (R&B), urban blues, Motown, smooth jazz, and gospel music. There are certainly a lot of technical demands that are mixed into this genre. But I think it's really fun to play. I used to listen to other people play this type of music and think: "HOW do they get it to sound that way?!" So fun. Thankfully, I don't have a Delilah in my life so I don't have to worry about losing my strength. lol

      @@elenafortinmusic Ha, ha, you're great. Personification of soul? Billy Preston. The last 20 or so years I was singing regularly, I specialized in the black spiritual genre, mostly black composers/arrangers. Loved it; it seemed more real to me, authentic. Also studied through guys like Ted Gioia with his history of jazz and blues, those origins in the Mississippi Delta, spread like wildfire up the delta and all over the world. Soul playing is like soul preaching, exact repetition of ideas and phrases with altered emphasis. I'm proud of a concert I presented in 2013, Corpus Christi United Methodist Church, large and celebrated venue there, virtually all spirituals, all manner of composers, settings in all manner of styles, Copland, Burley, Mark Hayes, "Shenandoah," Celius Daugherty.... ; I called it "Down by the Riverside." Nice work again. Not easy to play "The Old Rugged Cross" in a-slow, rather rockin' strong accent beat-swing; effective though. As you play it slow and thoughtful, it's not in the least irreverent. It's a style a lot of folks would take to. Really nice fade out at the finale. This could be done in most any church and folks would feel "blessed." It's valid as a religious piece, some entertainment, always essential in my book, value and enjoyable to listen to; few folks would turn off when this one was spinning on the turntable. I love it. I worked on it for a couple days before going to something else. I like it though; will eventually get back to it. This "Gospel" is one of my favorite Edstrom books; I play a lot from this book, working on many at one time. Very nicely, think tastefully, done. Great intuitions on the music. Kudos!

      Thank you for your comments as always! (I missed you while you were gone to San Diego!!). I was wondering if some of the Gospel or Hymn arrangements could be considered irreverent. (I try not play them that way!) Some of the arrangements I am not sure would fly well in church--conservative ones anyway. They are still of value to me, because of my interest in seeing how the arranger treats the material. I just have a hard time with some of them, and even some of the Rock or Pop ones too as being a bit too far out. But I take them in the spirit that they were meant, and they always make a very interesting intellectual (and/or musical) exercise.

We were connected to hundreds of people who were connected to thousands of others; lots of bugs floating around this year. This one seems like the common cold; unlike the stuff we both got over the last 2-3 months which was more severe. Overjoyed to be back at the keyboard, yesterday. Workiing Denis Zdanov's "easier" pieces, suggested in the course to make sure the skills get incoprparated. I've gone back to slooooow, for these examples, a Burgmuller + a Bach. There was a bunch of years trying to play stuff up to tempo before I could handle all of it. Bad habits develop. Again, now "starting over," AGAIN, another reset after 15 years in grade as some kind of pianist. Denis talks "PATIENCE," patience and more patience, not talent as the way forward. I see it now as the most direct pathway to speeding up. As you contribute, "Playing at the speed of no mistakes;" takes discipline with someone of my tendencies. Afterthought: If one practices too fast with considerable messiness, the messy parts themselves become "learned" behavior. Not just a zero sum game. i have been aggressive an ambitiouss all my life, with a good nature, but still driven; like with many things, there is a better way. Slowing down will never take away from the things one already does well; you will never lose those things. It's the discomfort in working on what needs improvement that = max progress. I bot his Gospel book and the Christmas Standards first. This is one, perhaps initial, of the first ones I worked on, brought it up to performance level 2-3 years ago. It is a stong arrangement of a very tender classic; I loved it and love hearing it under your spell. I heard Ethel Waters sing it in Los Angeles, big outdoor venue, when I was about 17. She was in her 70's but looked older; voice was not as even as it had been but it mattered not because it's, as is all music, all about how one interprets it for self and then others. How the performer shares themselves in what they are doing, no matter what that is. That and to add, your cover here was appropriately reverent and imparting a firm confidence in the good. Not indulgent nor pinched and overbearing; but the in the best possible taste. You and Brent's arrangement show respect, without a hint of selfish or hidden agenda. Really lovely. Keep 'em coming. Thanks for your comment! I also love Jobim's work!! I will check out Gal Costa. I did play Triste earlier on this channel when I was first trying out his repertoire.

    very nice ! and qq: which tablet are you using to display notes ? How does it change the page automatically :-) ? - is it connected to keyboard or there's a ...pedal ;--) ??

      I am using a I-Pad Pro, an older model but it still works great! I had bought a refurbished one for the price, but wanted this one because of the size. The tablet displays a full page--I think it's a 12". I bought a page-turning pedal on Amazon--it's a P33-01. It was fairly inexpensive but works amazingly well. It connects via bluetooth, so it will work with other brands of tablets. I love it--I've tried other ones--it's quiet but you can definitely tell when you've pressed it (some of the other models of page-turning pedals that I've tried didn't work as well). It takes a bit of practice, but I LOVE it! (It has five different settings so that it will work with a bunch of different apps --page up/page down, page left/right etc.

      Hi jac5085, I've been playing since I was 9--started with organ and then switched to piano 3 years later after I finished the 8 books in the organ course! I also started percussion when I was 19, but only did that for a few years. I've been playing for a long time--just over 40 years and done a lot of different things music-wise... It's never too late to start--enjoy your musical journey!!
