  • You're probably aware that you can control the AM5 mount in four different ways with; (1) a hand controller, (2) over WiFi with your smartphone by using the ASI mount App; (3) over USB with your PC/Laptop and an ASCOM driver, and (4) the ASIAIR. In this video, I'll explain how to connect and control the ZWO AM5 mount using the first three options. I'm planning a separate v/blog on the ASIAIR and the AM5. I was rather impressed by the ASI Mount APP so I will discuss that option in detail in this tutorial video on how to connect and control the ZWO AM5 mount.

    Wido, Super helpful video as my AM5 arrived a couple of days ago. A detailed walk through of the ASI AIR Plus with the AM5 is sorely needed, especially since the 2.0 version just came out. Many Thanks.

    How did you polar align the mount with just the app? The polar alignment features seem to only work if you can platesolve.

    Dank U Wido! I just ordered an AM5 (with a little coupon ZWO kindly sent me) and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive at my door in New Zealand--perhaps as soon as next week!

    Hey Waldo. I’ve been watching you for years. So happy for you. You are going to love this combo. need a pier extension get the p200. The 160 has some flex. Of course I hope you get a hyperstar. It’s Amazing. I tend to use the usb to connect the am5 with the Asiair looking forward to your images.

    Thank you for sharing. As I said I own a 152 with a 3400 internal filter and the camera I use is a 174MM. I have tried to emulate the pictures of of your trains however I cannot receive a picture on sharpcap or the other program I use is ZWO, I’ve tried my own diagonals tried straight through. I’ve tried my three times and my two times tell you Balow and no matter what I do I cannot get a image to come up on the screen of my laptop or my tablet. laptop or my tablet. I am very, very new to this hobby And I am convinced it’s something I am not doing right. I took two photos of two different image trains I was trying I would send them to you however I do not know how to do that through this medium.
    Thank you again

    This video is SO HELPFUL for a new AM5 owner like me, as this is not well covered in the official manual.
    One thing about the wifi connection that is tripping me up is the difference between cellular/wifi availability. A key question I have is: does the app use internet real time at all? Or is *everything* downloaded into it?
    I'll give an example of why this is tripping me up: we all have three possible combinations. 1) At my home, I have my own wifi house network with internet access. The mount and my home router both seem to fight over whose wifi network gets to connect to my phone. (And this has actually caused me a fair amount of grief trying to sort it out.) 2) in a public place where I have a cell phone signal and internet via the phone, but no wifi network. 3) The third scenario is out in a remote location where there is no cell signal. What are the differences for using the app with those scenarios?

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  Год назад

      I think the app will work with the mount on a remote location with your cellphone,but I'll check it out to be sure.

    • @nuttmig
      @nuttmig Год назад

      @@AstroForumSpace I'm guessing so too... what I'm getting at is, if you're in an area with no cell signal or internet, does the app work at a deficit at all? Or the converse of that, if you're in a location where your phone is pulling a signal, is there any real-time communication between the app and the internet that enhances any functionality? (Thanks everyone for your input in this!)

    Thanks Wido. Excellent presentation. I'll be getting the am5 soon. Most likely the asi air as well. Curious, any issues with all that gear on the am5 without the counterweight on the lightweight tripod? Thanks again.

      Hi Perry, thanks. Nope, no issues with the Edge hd 8" w/Camera and filterwheel. Guiding is a little bit worse as compared to the EQ6-R Pro, but still well within one arcsecond.

    Hello Wido, thanks for this video. I just bought my AM5 but I have the following problem: when sending the mount to an object it is positioned very far away, but too far away. I am using the ASCOM Driver since I do not have the ASIR +. The software I use is ATP. I do the polar alignment with the PoleMaster (I adapted it to the mount with a 3D printed part). According to me, I have all the correct configuration in all applications. It seems that the mount thinks that I am in another location and that is why it does not position itself in the correct coordinates of the objects. Is there any initial configuration that needs to be done on the AM5? I just took it out of the box and that's it. APT communicates well with the mount. The truth is I can't detect what I have wrong so that the mount does not position itself in the coordinates that I indicate. Before I used my Atlas EQG mount and controlled it with EQMOD and I remember that I made several configurations in that application which I do not see some in the ZWO ASCOM driver such as the Altitude parameter, I can only enter my coordinates but not the elevation in meters from the place where I am. I would appreciate any comments from you on this. Thank you. Clear skies.

    Excellent video. Can the mount be used with the phone app for visual astronomy without a camera?

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  Год назад +1

      Sure! Just put an eyepiece in your telescope and use the app to point the mount and track.

      This would be very helpful to me as well! There's a big delta between [mount set up, home position, where I *think* it's polar aligned] and [use the app to go to any object and it does so accurately]. i.e., how to make sure it's correctly aligned and will track accurately. The AM5 instructions don't cover this critical piece and it's resulted in a lot of frustration for me!

    Do you get good enough guiding with that guidescope running the Celestron with just a reducer? That's a long focal length for not having an OAG.

    Hi Waldo, if one does not own AsiAir can one manually enter RA/Dec coordinates through the ASI Mount app instead? Thank you.

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Vin, you can use the asi-mount app with a very nice 3d skymap to point the am5 mount. You can download the app for free and check it out. It doesn't have platesolving like the asiair so you may need to search a bit to align your target exactly with the telescopes' field of view.

  • @captaincook6666
    @captaincook6666 9 месяцев назад

    If you use ASCOM/USB can you plate solve and sync (eg in sharpcap) to build a pointing model or just moves mount to centre? I am confused how it can achieve a pointing model.

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  9 месяцев назад

      you can connect the ZWO AM5 to any kind of software that includes plate-solving - like NINA or SGPro. Most people use the ASIAIR Plus nowadays to control their AM5.

  • @jairoamaral
    @jairoamaral 8 месяцев назад

    I couldn't find anything about the Sync button. What does it do?

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  8 месяцев назад +1

      Sometimes your real-time view does not completely match the virtual view. When that happens, you can center the target in your telescope view and press sync to align the virtual view.
