There's really no coming back from a statement like that when you're already a wealthy successful adult. Quinton straight up said that people who are 3 years away from qualifying for a drivers license, less than 2 years into puberty, and that the MSRP says are too young to even watch his movies without adult supervision just unironically said that it's OK to fuck these little girls if they're "asking for it".

You mean like Asia Argento after she too was a victim, but then slept with a minor Jimmy Bennett...and even paid him hush money? Samantha Geimer requested the charges be dropped.....so if Polanski had paid her enough money besides, like Argento, it would be fine? I lived in Paris in 2009 when the Polanski brouhaha was happening, having been sent to work in the French office of my company. A lot of people who were defending Polanski simply had the facts wrong. They would say the girl was 16 or 17 and that Polanski fled the US to avoid an unfair trial. The idea that Roman Polanski was going to have a photo session with a teenager is a ruse. It was Polanski simply creating an opportunity to have an extended time alone with this teenager. And I am having a very hard time believing that the mother was this naive and gullible. The mother should have been investigated. When Polanski ran to Europe the first thing he did was have a new fifteen-year-old girlfriend Natasha Kinski. He made her very successful as an actress.

Exactly, a 13 year girl who is 'up' for sex with old men, has most likely had a toxic childhood be it physical, emotional, sexual abuse or neglect. They are by definition vulnerable and do not have the mental capacity to consent to sex.

In interview Polanski didn't seem to believe that he had done anything wrong. I wonder what his morals are regarding the age of consent. Quentin Tarantino did try to defend Polanski on the Howard Stern show - Stern pointed out that he has two daughters around that age and that they are not mentally capable of consenting to sex. He further said to Tarantino 'what if it was your daughter - you would want to beat the shit out of him.' Polanski himself had a daughter - if he had discovered that at age 13 she had had sex with a 45 year old, would he have been ok with that? Somehow I doubt it. I believe that he has to live with the shadow of what he did hanging over him. Polanski said that all men want to f**k young girls - that is girls who have not fully developed into adults. For anyone to wish to do this I believe have something amiss in their minds. I did enjoy Tess Of The D'Urbervilles but I generally don't like his movies. They tend to be dark and involve abuse of women. There is a book about Sharon Tate in which it is claimed he was abusive towards her. Everything about him seems to indicate that he doesn't see women as equals and he believes that because he is an acclaimed director that different rules apply to him. I have just been watching an interview with Polanski in which he describes his formative years and he said that he was 'just 12' when he was told that his mother had died in the concentration camp and was not coming back. Clearly he regards 'just 12' as being a child. The girl he drugged and raped was just 13 - almost 14 when he did so. Not much older than 'just 12'. ruclips.net/video/xaF7WxdUdns/видео.html

Very good points. I just can't believe how Hollywood could be so far up their own backside that they didn't see this for what this was, a rape of a 13 year old girl by an adult. So unbelievable. How the f was he allowed to make a film like The Pianist with US backing and Hollywood actors, and then to be nominated for an aaOscar, win it and then get a standing ovation (the fact he wasn't there would have been a constant reminder to all of Hollywood of what he had done. At 90 he is going to die soon, but because of the support of these people, I don't think he will ever truly repent and I suspect he has never seen any problem with it (as you say, women or 13 year old party girls are just objects in his life).

Polanski suffered numerous horrific losses and atrocities but that does not excuse his behavior. Every predator has a trauma story they use for a pass. But for every one of these predators there are many more people who suffered the same or worse but held on to their decency.

A thoughtful and necessary video. I used to love Tilda Swinton from her very earliest movies so I was gutted when I first learnt that she had signed this. But I actively started to dislike her when I read that, when approached by a Guardian reporter post-Weinstein, her (well, probably her rep's) response was that she "would like to graciously pass on being interviewed." Who the f*** uses "graciously" to describe their own actions? What a detestable, self-important person she clearly is. I don't particularly care for Natalie Portman but at least she did publicly recant.

I need a great plumber far more than I will ever need a great artist...there is a lot of blood on these 'artists' who signed this petition...my guess is they know a hundred Polanskis and never had the guts to speak out...their careers mattered more, belonging mattered more, being in the loop mattered more...their souls? Not so much.

Peer pressure and shaping of a narrative can come a long way. I remember how journalists used to talk about Polanski around 15 years ago. One report said that he 'seduced' a 13-year old girl. They didn't even mentionthe druging and never called it rape. So based on that, I was inclined to think that his arrest in Switserland was an overreaction to an old lawsuit.
So imagine you were a career driven film maker in Hollywood in a pre-metoo era, who got told to sign that Polanksi petition. Would you have been enlightened enough to refuse? I think we all like to believe that we would. But it's important to know that we're all vulnerable to fall into this culture of excusing abusers. I can still see it with Michael Jackson fans. And it's easy to view Donald Trump followers as brain washed cult members for supporting a sexual predator. Just remember, you may have made mistakes in the past. Let's at least use these cases to learn from them.

I definitely agree with your point of view. That was part of the inspiration to make this piece; to have one concise video that explains all of the facts of the situation so that people don't continue our past mistakes of not looking too deeply into this scenario and trusting biased journalists.
I don't assign any blame to every day moviegoers for supporting Polanski, as many of them don't know the details of the case. I hope that nothing in my piece leads you to believe I do. Who I do assign blame to are the people who did know the details - collaborators in Hollywood, admirers who gained fame long after, etc. People who were "in the know" about the situation or at least had the ability to be "in the know" in one way or another and still chose ignorance.
I agree with you though. Times have been changing rapidly in the last decade or so but, especially in the decades between 1960-2000, the culture of excusing abusers or simply looking the other way was all too common. Thanks for the comment!

How do people not understand that the victim forgiving him, does not absolve him of anything?
Her forgiving him was for *surprise* herself.
Forgiving someone doesn't mean what they did is okay, it just means you let go of the anger towards them that's eating YOU up.
In newer interviews she says, she is glad he is finally seen as the monster he is, so stop painting it as if she thinks he's an amazing person nowadays.
It probably took a lot of therapy for the victim, to stop excusing him and realizing her childhood was taken away.
Her saying that, was probably because she wanted the decades long slut shaming to finally stop.
And finally: none of his other victims have publicly said they forgive him.
So because one victim had a very skewed view on abuse, all the others victims experience don't matter?

The criminal doesn't get punished because the victim wants him to. He gets punished because he is a threat to society. If you get shot you can tell the cops and the judge you forgive the shooter, he's still getting punishment.

Raping children is not a "mistake" and running away from prison is not "paying for it" - you're the one who needs to examine yourself for defending child rape and why you support a slap in the face for all survivors (and for those who have lost people to suicide after Polanski-like predators raped them).
