I'm no way an artist or creative at all but seeing kids my age make so much complicated and creative art. How can you say you weren't good? That was great.
Tania theres so mamy artists i. The world with fresh new ideas these days it makes us feel smaller. Also as u improve u look at old art with a kinda feeling like oh what was i thinking lol
i feel like our art education in high school mainly evolved around drawing still life/cleaning products, boxes, shoes and people sitting down. The college curriculum is a mess too, I'm now in my final year and nowhere near the standard of work I see from people only just applying over in the US. Much love from Ireland & thank you for sharing.
I was going to comment this too! I'm in transition year in Ireland and we are no where near this level at least in secondary school. Honestly I'm not even sure if there's art schools in Ireland.
Oh god yeah, the art course for leaving cert here is an absolute joke, I dropped art in favour of applied maths lol, the class was awful (screw you art history) and I knew it would never help me develop any sort of art or design skills.
If you guys are interested in art, I would definitely recommend you all spend a year doing a FETAC art portfolio course after you're done with the leaving cert. That's what I did and it helped me get into the art colleges in Cork and Limerick (CCAD & LCAD). And I didn't even do art for leaving cert! The course was so so so worth it, I was able to use the points I earned on the portfolio course instead of my leaving cert points, and I was shown how to create a successful portfolio using all different kinds of methods, including pottery and printmaking and sculpture. Most people who apply for art college in Ireland straight out of secondary school don't get in because nobody really helps them or shows them how to create a proper portfolio. But if you do it the way I did it's much much easier to get in because you're more prepared. And if any of you decide to apply: good luck!
oh...my...goodness. Not only is your water color and drawing amazing but the SCULPTURES OMGG SO DEDICATED THIS IS AMAZING. wow...keep it up you are awesome!
You're so fine art, I love ittt, It's like a video representation of a gallery visit LOL I LOVED the octopus/aloe painting, it looks amAzing. I'm going into design at University。
Very inspiring! I'm a sophomore in high school and want to apply to an art school, this was one of the best portfolio videos I've seen cause it gave a different perspective than others! Thank you so much!
what do you mean you're not that great?? You are absolutely amazing!!! my jaw dropped at how stunning that space watercolour piece is. It's impressive how flexible and diverse you are in creating art. I so so so wish my teachers at my highschool did a better job with teaching us and preparing us for the future. I wish to take some classes before I graduate cause my school has a bad art program. Anyways I hope you have fun in school and congrats on getting in! you deserve it
i dont even know why i enjoy watching art videos / art students so much because i am a science student? but your voice is so calm and i really enjoyed the video keep it up :) your video was suggested when i watched annabelles vlog haha! have a nice day
This was amazing! Thank you for sharing! Can I ask what pastels you use? That piece at 4:35 was my favorite, I was stunned you made such an amazing piece with just pastels! I would love to get better at the medium, do you have any tips?
Yesss I'm glad you're taking that initiative! I use mungyo soft pastels (set of 24, it's really high quality pastels from Korea) the pastels just glides on to the paper. One technique I love to use is to smear the pastel with soft tissues. I also layer colors a lot to create tones. I would suggest finding tutorials because watching someone do it would be the most helpful :) Have fun!
You seem so nice and chill!! Do you have any recommendation for someone starting with their portfolio? I feel a bit stuck creatively speaking since what most portfolio guides say is that you should use real life reference in most of your art pieces. But I have no idea how to blend that rule with my own creativity. Again I loved your video and your artwork! Thank you for sharing
Thank you!! I definitely did not reach my creative peak in high school, and I didn't have much life experience to draw on :( I think it helps to read books and start to develop your own ideology. For my first semester at RISD, I based my final design project on the novel "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and the idea of self-actualization and feeling infinite. If you have no ideas at all (like I so often did in high school), grab some materials and make something! Take a bunch of drinking straws and challenge yourself to make something out of it, etc. The end result will be portfolio worthy because it is your craftsmanship and idea :) good luck!
I'm not creating a portfolio or applying to schools. Just someone who likes all kinds of art, and watches a lot of art-related videos on YT. I really enjoyed the walk fhrough your portfolio. Thanks for posting.
my portfolio for high school got me into art II. I dont know what to expect because i dont know what the difference between art I and art II. Im just happy because freshmen rarely get into this class.
I want to go to art school but i'm worry about the job that can get from this major I don't know anyone went to art school so I'm still thinking and worry thank you for your video
I love your crafted pieces, they're so creative and functional- awesome work!! RISD is my top choice of art school, and it's so helpful to see your work, thank you for sharing! How is your first year going?
Bella Lin hey thanks so much! I have been here a semester and it was an awesome experience! I grew so much as an artist in ways high school me would have never imagined :) best of luck 💕
CCA's san francisco campus sucks. they're in an area where there are homeless people around. all of their programs are in one building. the interior and exterior of the building makes me feel like i'm in an airplane building. they use wall dividers to make a classroom for the fine art and illustration program. how cheap of them. but there's another entrance that's second floor where the graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, and other programs are. their classrooms are better and they don't use wall dividers. i don't see myself spending 4 years of my life in CCA.
I had no idea that was going on in their SF campus :( I took precollege at their Oakland campus and I thought the school was pretty nice. They have a strong industrial design program and CCA was just ranked one of the highest ROI art schools! I think it's a school to consider.
I have to give my college applications in two years and i know im early but.. since i was like really small its consistently been in my head that the more detailed a piece the better it is. Now im beginning to realise this isnt the case but what do you think? Do colleges look for more detailed work or how creative we can be?
It's never too early to create art! Same, I used to think the bigger the piece, the better it is... Now, I learned it definitely depends on your intent and concept. As long as the work is apparent that you put thought and time into it, it will be really strong. For college applications, I suggest including a series of conceptual artworks to show your ability to think, and then technical pieces that show your dedication/craftsmanship/etc.
so i'm going to a highschool where they don't offer electives (art, music, etc..) but i do get to earn my associate's degree at no charge to me. Will art schools still accept me with a non-traditional experience?
if by non-traditional you mean by digital art, yes! it would be nice to have some traditional art in there though to show you know how to work with techniques such as shading.
There are some people who pay very little money a year to attend ($6000 a year etc.) because they are either low income, or they are Providence residents (I know a girl who was very frustrated with staying in Providence, she hates it here. She basically got full ride tho. The money was a motivation for her to stay and study at RISD.) I come from the Bay Area, which is pretty affluent. I only received a thousand dollar in scholarships that I had to return and another thousand in work studies (I have to have a job on campus to earn the money). Fill out your FAFSA on time, maybe you'll be more lucky ^_^
I'm applying to RISD this year and after seeing your portfolio, I'm not sure if I'm going to get in anymore 😓 Do you have any last minute tips for portfolio?
You honestly never know until you try! There is a large variety of freshman at RISD because everyone's portfolio is so different. Try experimenting with different mediums, make something abstract (technique isn't the most important, your ideas are). I remember someone who got in making a vagina sculpture with a mirror in the center for their portfolio LOL be weird :)
Great portfolio... I have 1 question.. I want to make a portfolio for industrial design.. So do I have to make some model or something like that or will my creative work be enough for that.. I hope you answer my question... Thank you
i have a question, if i dont know how to paint a portrait - never had an art teacher or enough time to practice on my own - will i be able to get accepted into art and design universities ?
Your portfolio looks really creative! Do you mind if I ask for your SAT/ACT score to get there? I want to know if getting a high SAT score matters to get accepted into RISD.
+Min Ju Kim thank you! RISD cares on some level about your academics, but def not much as your portfolio. I'm not uncomfortable with sharing my SAT score although some ppl would rather keep theirs private (it's 2100)
As a point of reference, my SAT score was 2100 (too lazy to take it more than once...) I think RISD values academics slightly more than other art schools. As long as your portfolio is bomb, I don't think RISD really cares too much about a bad SAT score :)
So when you applied to RISD, you also put the sketches of your pieces in slide room. Right? I'm sorry if you already said it in your video i was just wondering.
Shelbi Craig most colleges use a website called slideroom to submit your art digitally! RISD requires you to mail in the original copy of your Risd prompt artworks. In one of the offices, You can get it back after you begin your freshman year. Not sure what happens to it if you didn't get in 😓
Arwen Olivier I'm not sure how to help in just a comment, but I'll try ^_^" I think it helps to start with your experiences and certain ideas that help shaped you. Good luck!
I'm no way an artist or creative at all but seeing kids my age make so much complicated and creative art. How can you say you weren't good? That was great.
I think I have room to grow haha ^_^" Thank you so much!
Tania theres so mamy artists i. The world with fresh new ideas these days it makes us feel smaller. Also as u improve u look at old art with a kinda feeling like oh what was i thinking lol

IKEA
I am in love with art.
i feel like our art education in high school mainly evolved around drawing still life/cleaning products, boxes, shoes and people sitting down. Zie feel the same way over here in Malaysia 💦
I was going to comment this too! I'm in transition year in Ireland and we are no where near this level at least in secondary school. Honestly I'm not even sure if there's art schools in Ireland.

my art life is basically all pretentious explanations :') thanks pal!!
YES! Finally an industrial design youtuber!!
wow, all these pieces look like such a good starting point
When you use charcoal, after you're done you can spray some hairspay on it so it won't smeer
This is amazing! This is so inspiring and you are SOOO TALENTED!!! bravo!
the ove the self portrait you did (with the bird, and the sky background -5:11)
These videos always remind me of senior year. Even though I opted for engineering.. I live for art!
Wauw, you're so creative. Loved everything
i dont even know why i enjoy watching art videos / art students so much because i am a science student? but your voice is so calm and i really enjoyed the video keep it up :) your video was suggested when i watched annabelles vlog haha! have a nice day

Hey I just got into RISD! I'll be attending as a freshman in fall 2017, so excited to be there
SullyStuffz ahhh that's exciting!! Congrats, you'll have a tough but amazing time ^_^
This is absolutely wonderful!
You should use a spray varnish thingy on your charcoal artworks. It helps.
mel Purificacion it does help! Still not 100% safe from smearing unfortunately : (
my portfolio for high school got me into art II. I dont know what to expect because i dont know what the difference between art I and art II. Im just happy because freshmen rarely get into this class.
Congrats! It's quite an accomplishment you got in freshman year :) keep up the good work
Cat creature goes there too! She's an amazing artist
I love how conceptual your work is, i go to CCA :D
yessssss girrllll your very talented!!
clicking on this video knowing it will make me doubt my artistic abilities
hi! risd sophomore here: just a lil note, you don't declare your major at the start of sophomore year; you declare around march of foundations year.
claudia joy hey! It's true, you have foundation year to figure out your major. Me personally, I'm very set on industrial design 🤗
your drawings are a trip :)
I want to go to art school but i'm worry about the job that can get from this major I don't know anyone went to art school so I'm still thinking and worry
thank you for your video

♡♡♡
Duckliving good luck and have fun at RISD
Your doggo is so cute~ :-D
you can protect your charcoal drawings by spraying some hairspray on top of them :)
Your absolutely amazing !!!!
I'm from Santa Cruz and might apply to CCA idk if I would be able to go across the country to attend a school like parsons or RISD 😅
CCA is a wonderful school :) I wanted a change of scenery so I flew to the east coast, but staying close to home would have been nice as well!

You seem so chill and comfortable! made me want to grab some tea with my dog and sit down!!(: haha
Thank goodness haha idk what I'd do without my doggo :)
How do we know if we’re on the right track in regards to our artwork applying to university examinations?
I have to give my college applications in two years and i know im early but.. since i was like really small its consistently been in my head that the more detailed a piece the better it is. if by non-traditional you mean by digital art, yes! it would be nice to have some traditional art in there though to show you know how to work with techniques such as shading.
What did you go there for graphic design or what? Because I want to draw realistic things like people? What would you be
You're so talented! :)
your art is beautiful your voice is so nice to listen to aha
do you know of people who have gotten full rides or half scholarships to RISD?? RISD has a reputation for not giving out a lot of money
There are some people who pay very little money a year to attend ($6000 a year etc.) because they are either low income, or they are Providence residents (I know a girl who was very frustrated with staying in Providence, she hates it here. She basically got full ride tho. The money was a motivation for her to stay and study at RISD.)

SO TALENTED
What did you do for the white specks?
Omg u got accepted to cca!! That is my dream college 🙌🙌
i have a question, if i dont know how to paint a portrait - never had an art teacher or enough time to practice on my own - will i be able to get accepted into art and design universities ?
if you actually have to draw those before applying so what do you actually do in school?
Ahhh, your portfolio looks amazing! Can I ask you which major you applied for? ☺️☺️
Thank you!! Industrial design :)
Hey RISD like a super popular and good school? because there are a lt of youtubers who go there?
I absolutely love your art! Btw, what do you use to edit your videos :')
CookieCat I use adobe premiere pro!
do you know CatCreature?? shes in the same year as u think in RISD
My sister has that bedspread
Your portfolio looks really creative! Do you mind if I ask for your SAT/ACT score to get there? I want to know if getting a high SAT score matters to get accepted into RISD.

I'm not uncomfortable with sharing my SAT score although some ppl would rather keep theirs private (it's 2100)
What brand of pastel do you use?
So you're allowed to draw/paint pictures you took yourself?
Just wondering... What kinda of SAT score do RISD accept the most?

Yep, everything went in slide room!
Very well done!
Do you get the art back that you send? Or do you have to send different pieces to each college?

You're really talented wow
Are you talking about Rhode Island school of design? If so cool, I've never met a RUclipsr who lives in Rhode Island or has at least visited here
L A Y L O N I honestly!
I cant even draw a stickman right :/
art is a struggle :')
But you can handle it quite well I assume :) with your amazing talent and creativity
Sometimes haha there were definitely a lot of all nighters in college ^_^" you're too kind!
Then you have a problem
Welp I'm not getting into art school :/
I struggle with how I can translate my personality to art, can you help me with that? btw, love your art
Arwen Olivier I'm not sure how to help in just a comment, but I'll try ^_^" I think it helps to start with your experiences and certain ideas that help shaped you. Good luck!
Duckliving thank you! I'll try my best xD
haha 5:50 really Mr.Akamichi style LOL
Great work! Thanks for sharing :)
Wait high school portfolio as in for high school or from high school
