      The problem with interuniversal travel is there is an infinite number of universes whose laws of physics differ from ours. There's no saying that you wouldn't come out the other side in a universe and fall apart on an atomic level.

    If this project became successful, along with the ITER nuclear fusion reactor in Karadache would be some of the biggest developments in human history

      ITER is a huge waste of money better spent on refining other more recent fusion methods than conventional torus shaped tokamak reactors.
      It's at best a giant platform for POTENTIAL fusion research advancements at a scale closer to a true commercial reactor.
      Which becomes a bit laughable when other methods like the related 'spheromak' can achieve fusion with a smaller reactor, or stellarators which have a more complex design but a far more stable fusion reaction due to custom designed magnetic topologies vs the brute force of the standard basic torus/donut shape of a tokamak.
      ITER and DEMO are exercises in national govtms throwing research money/grants after a conventional scientific target - it's the fusion analogy to the Space Launch System in the US which has yet to produce a viable rocket to replace American dependence on Russian orbital launch rockets when commercial enterprise like SpaceX has done it faster with less money.

      The Mach Effect principle was not so controversial a long time ago.
      Mostly people concentrated on the near and left the far (ie what Mach Effect was about) to others until the point that it became a quaint old principle that few put any credence in.
      But considering that recent studies into 'dark matter' effects on galaxy spin (like the Milky Way) have determined that gravity of far off galaxies and galaxy clusters may be affecting this spin in ways beyond what is expected from the observed galactic mass.
      Until now this was believed to be explained by 'dark matter' mass which is not seen, but it seems far more credible that it is simply the effect of nearby gravitational forces working against that spin.
      If this can dethrone some previously attributed effects of dark matter in the universe, then it may be a possible force to act against for a thruster.

      Any electron that is added for mass in one direction retains its inertia when removed.
      Also, latest research has it that Dark matter doesn't exist.

    I think the peer criticism was mainly that it wasnt a viable solution, not that it cpuldnt work. From 94-00's theres been more than a few material and manufacturing techniques developed that couls increase the efficiency of the design, even going so far as to make them on a nano scale assembling them into a pile after they solve the resonance problem.

      Eh?
      Piezoelectrical physical motion is no less real than EM radiation used in the EM drive.
      The difference is that EM drive was basically saying that EM radiation trapped in a cavity would be causing thrust beyond what a photon rocket could - ie producing thrust against an open system from energy trapped in a closed system.
      Where as MEGA is supposedly acting against anomalous gravitational forces in a matter similar to what was really happening in EM drive 'thrust' with Lorentz interactions against the Earth's magnetic field from a badly shielded power wire going to the microwave generator.
      So basically MEGA is doing on purpose with anomalous gravity what certain EM drive builds were doing with anomalous magnetism by accident.
      Only magnetic forces in deep space will be much harder to come across I imagine.

      The EM drive maybe the photon equivalent of the Woodward drive because the photon varies in energy (therefore mass) at different points within the system. These variations in mass-energy interact with the Universal gravitation field to produce a back-reaction to the thrust.

    possible to work, if instead of pizoelectric cristal blade to by titanium blades, the blades are pushed forward by autside coil, the polarity electric current making the blades move back and forth. for the lamella to change its mass, you have to put current on each blade when they are pushed forward it passes positive current and when they are pushed back it passes negative current, inversation polarity of coil with alternative curent from the blade must be temporizate vith the same frecventa. so the electric current on a conductor can change the mass of the conductor, if the current is positive it means that the conductor has a empty of energy, if the current is negative it has a lot of charge energy.

    The others who think they are scientists should be ashamed to have such a poor time to test out the mega drive. They should rather be objective and test it scientifically than demolish a new idea. I think it's a good idea that he could figure out something so simple that humanity was embarrassed by his invention. What he found out is how everything moves forward. He should have received a Nobel Prize for that. The next time someone claims something, they better find out if it's true or not.

      Oh dear god, there's always some pseudo science nut in every real science discussion.
      Tesla was fundamentally an electrical engineer, he achieved most of what he set out to do in life.
      aka a natural free energy source for electrical power in hydroelectric generation (Niagara Falls powerplant) and a relatively cheap way to use electrical power transmitted through copper wires over long distance.
      aka AC 3 phase electrical motors, which he may not have even developed first to begin with as an Italian professor demonstrated a similar device over a year earlier, and the device Tesla claimed to match it suspiciously survived a fire which destroyed all other lab equipment that same year.
      ie Westinghouse strong armed / cheated the legal system to favor Tesla's motor in the US over an Italian competitor - not a great shock that US judges ruled against the Italian really is it?
      The only thing Tesla failed at is wireless power transmission, for an obvious reason.
      The copper industry was making a killing from supplying the long distance power line wires to electrify the US and the world.
      With their lobbying efforts no one was going to just give Tesla money to develop his wireless transmission towers, and he was fundamentally incapable of managing his own finances so he was never going to get it done on his own.

    The thrust is no doubt possible.
    There are more variables on making it practical.
    Deterioration of piezo crystals is minor and can be replaced if the resonation is too small of a margin.
    Direction of travel will have to change because of gravitational forces.
    If not addressed then it is more likely to speed towards the strongest gravity ending its existence.
    The thrust to time to speed ratio would not likely be powerful enough for "Escape velocity" from exponential greater gravitational pulls.
    The closer it gets to speed of light the more propulsive energy is required.
    It would also be like steering the ship in between the all the effecting gravitational wave strengths to avoid being sucked into what is like it's minor black hole.
    Every time it needs to make a course correction it requires energy for that and the ship slows down.
    Gravity "sling shot" effects would require secondary propulsion system to be mandatory.
    It is also possible that the solar panel will act more like a solar sail.
    I do hope studies continue into this because it has potential to work in combination of other propulsive systems.
    I could imagine generation ships having these capabilities.
    I wonder if he thought of this when crystal quartz watches cycled on time.

      Yes they should have more traditional me methods of thrust onboard for emergencies and they should only use the engine in interstellar space were the reach of gravity is so small that it wouldn’t be a problem

      Nah, Mach was the real visionary here.
      The stale nature of his Mach Effect principle is part of why people are skeptical about MEGA.
      Woodward is simply taking a long shot out of making something usable out of Mach Effect.
      Considering ME may well have been proven recently by a study attempting to pin dark matter on the effect of gravitational spin I would say that ME has more credence now.
      But that does not necessarily translate into MEGA itself being viable.
      Certainly not with these extremely clunky looking prototypes.
      IMHO it may require cube like stacks of much, much smaller, more intricate devices like MEMS arrays to really make the concept viable.
      If so they certainly are in the right time for it given the smartphone age has drastically increased interest in MEMS devices and their production.

    While my first instinct is to dismiss this as nonsense, once I realized it was really based on the work of Einstein I knew that there was definitely a possibility it could be real. Einstein tended to be right even when he was wrong.

    If this works, and if it can scale up dramatically, then it would make possible things that seem like sci-fi: vehicles that can travel not just through space, but through air as well, or simply hover, with no visible moving parts.

      If it works.... a scaled up version could potentially have huge mass savings. Even better than fusion which still requires most of its mass in fuel for interstellar journeys. Enough that you could afford to bring spares piezos and anything else you need.

    I'm rather skeptical. vibrations aka eccentrically moving masses were used in past attempts (for example dean drive heh :D ) and proven to not producing the thrust. But if one wants to be sure, why not to send small apparatus to ISS and test it in zero gravity? It may be most important discovery known to man. a few thousand dollars to test the functionality of the idea is nothing compared to possible benefits if effect exists.

    Like the emdrive, build a small satellite, shoot it into space, let's see if it works, when it works, build more, collect data, throw an AI on it and tell it to make a better version/piezocrystal so on so forth.

      Unfortunately that’s not how academia works. They want proof of claim before proof of concept. The only company really using the rapid prototyping method is SPACEX. I’m all for how you said to do it but academia makes that near impossible. That’s why we need groups of scientists and engineers that rapid prototype crowd funded ideas. Like a scientific Kickstarter and you could donate to whatever ideas you want to see tested rather than wait for a bunch of old guys to approve the math problem in order for the idea to move forward.

      They're not talking about light speed, they're talking about 20% of light speed. If you can maintain constant thrust for long periods of time, you could accelerate to 20% light speed by half way to alpha centauri, then turn the ship around and decelerate for the other half. You would average 10% of light speed by doing this, and since alpha centauri is 4.37 light years away, it would take 44 years to get there with this approach. The acceleration required would be 0.04 m/s^2, which would be so small, you would probably not even perceive it (gravity is 9.8 m/s^2). A better design would be one that accelerates at 9.8 m/s^2 until the halfway point, then flips around and decelerates by that same amount. You would be going close to light speed by the time you hit the mid point, averaging roughly half light speed. So the trip would take around 9 years from our perspective, and you would have earth like simulated gravity the entire time (except briefly when you stop accelerating at mid point and flip the ship around). Further, the travelers would be well into the realm of relativity and time would slow for the travelers, so their elapsed time would be less than 9 years.

    People fail to see that even if you don’t use propellant you are still carrying energy locked in fuels. Whether it by plutonium for RTGs or fusion fuel, these drives being labeled “fuel-free” is very misleading. Even for single kilograms of payload you would need to pack hundreds of terawatt hours worth of fuel to reach near lights-red and if you plan on using solar or beamed power it is just better to use a photon sail.
    Also, technically any drive can reach another star in an astronaut’s lifetime with enough stored energy.

    Sorry, I'm skeptical. The net mass change is so small that net thrust would be hidden in the random thermal vibration of the atoms in the crystal. I'd like for it to be true,but . . . also 10 micro newtons is REALLY small, how much power was consumed to get even that result?

      I know this was posted a long time ago but I only just read about this and have been looking for more info when I found this video. It is a little missleading leading to your question. The thrust comes fromt he vibrational occilaction of the crystals not so much the power input. They are trying to find the "best" frequency, and for frequency changes it stupid small power requirements. On the paper I read they were testing a 20 second sweep from 45 kHz down to 25kHz off of 1.2Volts.

      Maybe not exactly, but it might as well be. If there are no propellers or jet engines or gas exhaust, and if it could be scaled, it would *look* like anti-gravity, even though it requires constant energy to pull off the effect.

    There is an equation for mass
    In Woodwards’ book that predicts that the mass of an object can be negative by vibrating the space around it with very high energies. In all this talk about warp drives, there is always the problem of not having negative mass or exotic matter. But determining whether this effect is real would be an incredible breakthrough in interstellar travel and the scientist who would prove this would win the nobel price

    the biggest challenge of space travels is need of a mass to spend for moving. you can not move without a propellant. if somebody makes a moving device without propellant it can circulate inside galaxy.

    Sounds pretty iffy to me! I think what we need is not just *_one_* kind of propulsion for a given mission, but *_several options on the same platform!_* I'd hate to be out in space and have my engine conk out. I'd also hate to be in a situation where I suddenly realize I've got the wrong *_kind_* of engine for what I need to do now. Those kinds of things are just deadly. I'd want all the options I could get! Overbuild it. Besides, I'd want to start with some rocket fuel to get going, then convert to ion propulsion for the long haul. Nobody ever seems to discuss this (besides me.) Too bad. tavi.

    There's a patent for a ftl craft, it's a specialized metal double hulled circular craft with the center filled with mercury chilled to -15,000 degrees. They use high vibration frequency plasma which allows it to detach from the surrounding quanta.
    There's also a patent for a warp drive that ran off the excess liquid nitrogen used to chill the mercury. I asked Asteronx, Sean Carroll and some other physics scientists some questions on it since they hadn't done any videos on the science behind it, i was wondering if they used teslas vacuum tube and spark gap plasma energy in the process. They blocked me two years ago and wouldn't give me an answer after i posted the link for the patent. Now i can't even find the two patents on google.

    Seems unlikely to work. The effect is very tiny and as you increase speed the effect will get smaller and smaller but it's going to take a long, long time to even get to where you see a decrease.

    It sounds like if it does work as described that the way the current devices are engineered is fundamentally inefficient.
    Perhaps some kind of stacked MEMS device?
    Considering he's claimed that it will work better the smaller the device is then stacked MEMS is the way to go.

      Yeah, but you didn't understand the relationship between energy and mass and how the mass can be altered and that's why it might work. I had a design for a perpetual motion machine made of magnets when I was 15, but just couldn't make it work. Later on, I learned why it wouldn't work no matter how well I constructed it.

      Who are you to say whether i knew it or not at that age??? 🤷‍♂️
      I have worked on Physics as a Hobby Physicist since i was 5 in Elementary school...
      This was due to me being Bullied in School EXPECIALLY during recess. Soooo, I purposely failed class math so i would have to do schoolwork inside for Recess in order to Avoid said Bullies, and ever since i just stayed inside every recess throughout elementary and middle school, which is how i started sooo early.
      I was introduced to lorentz transforms by 6, and worked on mass energy equivalence and the rest of relativity around the range of 7 - 8 years old....
      Sooo, Yeeeeah...
      I did know about it at a young age, OR at least enough to know the basic mechanism... Even though i admit, it was at a VERY mental visualization based level....
      Which, Means when it came to fine tune adjustments aka Calculus, and some more advanced trigonometry based functions in GR and SR, i couldn't explain it in that way. I didn't get introduced to that type of stuff till 4 years ago aka Freshman year and Highschool when i slowed down on the maths (from burning myself out with it at a young age).

      Or the effect is simply not highly conducive to the device designs that they have thus far produced for testing.
      To me it looks clunky as hell, like early green/black monochromatic LCD vs the modern 4k 10 bpc HDR LCD TV's we enjoy today.
      The more obscure a force is, the more work is likely needed to get any useful thrust from making use of it for propulsion.
      In my mind the device itselfis far too clunky and may actually be acting significantly counter to the force they hope to achieve.
      What they need is to fundamentally model the expected forces and the necessary design of a device to use the effect as efficiently as possible, not just to produce the effect itself, but to make sure that the device is not actually producing a counter force at the same time.
      Thus far from the descriptions all the devices seem very hacked together rather than scientifically designed.
      This is to be expected with minimal research funds, but far from ideal for fundamental science.
      If they model an idealized thruster device that when manufactured does not actually produce significant thrust results then I would say to call it a day.

But the limitations of early LEDs (and early integrated circuits and so on) were clearly related to the "infancy" of our position on the technological S curve for that particular technology. The enormous progress we made in that arena could have been fairly easily predicted - there was a whole path of improvement already visible at the time, and we just needed to become more refined in our fabrication abilities to tap that capability. For example, we just needed to develop our ability to work with ever smaller process geometry to move toward today's integrated circuits. I don't see such a path in this case. I suppose one should "never say never," but it seems unlikely that such an improvement path will emerge in this case. No such path is evident yet, whereas the path was obviously evident in the other case.
      I'd quite love to be wrong, by the way. I just don't hold out a lot of hope, though.
