Nice build! Coils don’t Thermosiphon well, I suspect this works more like a batch heater(big coffee pot) and gulps and pulses as the water in the coil boils. Getting the coil lower and closer to the tub would help with this. A straight upward angle from the top of the coil up to the top port on the tub would also help a lot. Droops kill the thermosiphon flow. A coil with a steeper pitch would also help. With your fab skills, a vertical tube heat collector would not be out of the question and would have much faster flow and more efficient heat transfer…
Ad a ring at the bottom with holes for releasing air and power an air pump with a battery and solar. Similar set up too a blow up hot tub but using a solar set up if you don’t have power just for the air pump. My blowup tub is in my back yard working as it was intended right now with an ice tent over it because I have power. But I can use it off grid. My tent stove is set up with copper pipe and I have a power station and an air pump made so I can leave the main electrical base at home. All portable and it sets up in 15 min, fills in 30 min with a decent water pump and heats in a few hours. I’ve used it at the cottage like that because my gramps didn’t want to pay the electric bill and I was there for a few months. If I knew I might use it I just fire some wood in the stove. Carry up my power station when I go for a tub.
Now this was entertaining, instructive and inspirational.. Great stuff. Was a bit worried the plastic hoses would melt, but seems like they did fine. The shaping of the coil for the heater was.. wild :-)
Wow! This looks awesome. 👍👍👍. I wish I had a place to build one. I'm a very good welder and have also worked quite a lot with wood. Just need a few tools you have there and a workshop :)
?LOVE IT, 1 question is did the poly hoses last or did you go with some other material for the tube heat at the stove connection. Comment is GREAT metal smithing.
Amazing job! I've got a pile of cedar logs and woodmizer sawmill. This might be my next project. Is it difficult to regulate the temperature of the water? Would a ball valve in one of the water lines help if it is?
I’ve got a Bluetooth thermometer that I watch as I bring the tub up to 105 degrees. I try to let the fire die down by then or sometimes I have to scoop the coals out into a bucket
Nice work. What material did you use to make the coil out of? Size, wall thickness, material type. Since you went to the effort of making that tube bender would you be Interested in making another coil to sell?
1-1/4” OD stainless steel with a 1/16” wall. Unfortunately I have taken apart the tube bender. I have seen many DIY tub and pool heaters on RUclips that used flexible copper coils. Mine works well but I am considering building a different boiler with a water jacket to try to harness more of the energy from the fire and be able to heat the tub faster. I have also learned that the flow rate of the thermal siphon changes quite a bit by the temperature of the fire and the temperature changes quite a bit depending on the moisture content of the firewood. Good luck. It’s a fun project
Check out the Salty Barrel coil kit. It's a large stainless steel heating coil with the hoses and fittings included. Our coil would heat a tub of this size in about 3 hours
No pumping system. Thermal siphon. Google Dutch tub. Works well. I added a bigger firebox and chimney to the boiler and now it works really well. 24 hrs to heat to 105 degrees from 53 degree well water. Approx 2200 litres.
There’s no way to keep the water warm when not in use so you’d need to start heating 4 hrs before you wanted to use it and then would need to sit there and feed the fire..

Didn’t look like enough coils in the heater to make it efficient? Insulating the hose would help too. How Long did it take to heat the water.? What was the ambient temperature?
I think it could have used more coils. Although the water that came out was very hot. It did take longer than I wanted to heat the water so I have made a new boiler with a water jacket and a circulating pump that is about 5 times faster. Thinking about making a video of that boiler

Very impressive. Well done, it looks great.

great video.
And of course only years of experience and excellence let you work the wood that way.

Peace be upon you thank you very much I'm from Morrocco
Great idea. Only if you want the stove not to lose heat outside, I suggest painting it silver. Black is good inside - it will quickly heat the room.
Wow your pretty good man nice work lots of talent

How long did it take the wood to expand water tight? Do you keep water in it all year?
Nice video! Do you find that the water in the tub is hot at the top and cold at the bottom?
Amazing. With those tools probably you can make wooden space x
This is must be what therapy feels like.
Awesome, are you making any to sell? Just in need of the stove and coil components, not the tub part

Great! but only one question: How does the water flow in the loop without a pump?
simple. hot water rise up cold water go down.
Great Work, did you used the fresh (red) Cedar, or tried it before.

What kind of router bit have you used to make that round shape for wood connection? Thanks.

I did lower the boiler so the warm water could rise. I have since redesigned the boiler and added a circulation pump
Best band ever

how to circulate the water?
There’s no way to keep the water warm when not in use so you’d need to start heating 4 hrs before you wanted to use it and then would need to sit there and feed the fire..
What type of plastic pipe did u use to carry the water? Without a pump, does the water move fast enough not to melt the plastic ?
Braided PVC hose. Still using the original hose. Has not melted.

I'll use the ground heat on sunny day
How much heat is lost by not insulating the lines?
Just think about the thermal loss it is going to have once it hits the tub...
