As an "Old-Timer" I used to ride the Jumbo Jets, and they also featured a spiral lift. Riding this in '06 really took me back to my youth. As a side note, this ride almost disappeared from the park forever. Six Flags wanted to build a new coaster, and they had planned on axing The Whizzer. Thankfully, people fought back. Shockwave, the Arrow multi-looper got the axe instead, and Superman Ultimate Flight was built in its place.

I had been on that coaster a few times at Six Flags Gurnee, IL. It was like the Demon with the black-colored track but I was afraid of loops in coasters so I stayed away from the Demon and finally rode on The Whizzer.
What do I think about the Whizzer?
If you do not like inversion coasters and you like a coaster that is a bit like the granddaddy American Eagle, the Whizzer is for you.
Even with no loops, this coaster still gave me some thrills. At least I did not flip out. It starts with a modernized version of a roller coaster ascent or climb called the corkscrew climb. I sometimes call it the snail's climb or slinky's climb because the way you go up in the rollercoaster's opening seconds of the ride is like it is coil-shaped.
After the apex of the climb, which is about 90 feet or so, you face the first drop leading to a very strong bank turn R at 45 or so mph, to another climb, and then another drop to still another bank to the R at the same high speed. Still this leads to another climb, and this leads to a bit of a drop to a bank R - segueing into another drop to a strong bank L for about 700-800 feet or so at a sort of high speed - and then, you are back upright - and the ride ends. So drops, ascents, banks and turns are part of the Whizzer ride, and even without the 360s, this is still a good coaster for the less-brave rollercoaster riders like me.
When the cars drop to their maximum speeds of 45 to 50 mph and face those strong bank turns, you hear that "whizzing" noise as if someone turned on the biggest ventilation fan behind your coaster car, and that is why it is called The Whizzer.

coming from someone who has a fear of the drops on larger coasters and now needs to lose weight to ride them again. as fun as this ride is, when you get to the end you just have a feeling of "thats it?". now im sure for those deathly afraid of coasters this seems intimidating as i couldnt get my wife to even try it. but if you are scared of roller coasters, i suggest trying this one to get your exposure therapy if you go to this park. unless you have crippling anxiety, this will prime you for bigger rides.
