A flying Mercedes and Toyotas dreams of winning go up in Smoke as BMW wins its first ever Le Mans race Original Videos: • Le Mans 1999 instagram: / modellbauer_klaus
Le Mans... been there as a spectator in the Group C era till 1989, the last race without the chicanes on the Hunaudiéres. Exactly 10 years later I came back to watch this 99 race due to all the manufacturers involved. In 2016 I went one final time - as a competitor in the Le Mans Classic event. A dream come true 🎉
An ex-works BMW 3.5 CSL. So not the quickest of all cars, but hey... 😉. I also had the pleasure to drive the Kremer-935 K3, but that was at the Nürburgring.
17:05 Reporter: "Tom that was a bit of a spectacular drive, you were making major headway there" Tom: "Sorry?" Reporter: "It was a great drive there you were making major headway there" Tom: "What?!?!" 😂
interesting comments from the presenters around 2:40 regarding how closely-following the two Mercedes drivers were at high speed given the events of Webber's crash that Thursday (and second flip during warmup that very morning!) Webber's autobiography Aussie Grit detailed how, even after his second flip, Mercedes refused to entertain the notion their cars had a dangerous, fundamental aerodynamic flaw - which may explain why their two drivers here are appearing to throw caution to the wind and follow very closely. It was only a matter of a couple hours later...
To be fair to Merc, it was the rulebook and not their design that was the problem. The Porsche GT1s also took flight in the American LeMans Series. Big overhangs is no bueno.
after Mercedes had lift and downforce problems in practice why werent they sorted by race day? If it wasnt for that they might have been podium finishers...
Good point since you cannot exactly see the take-off moment due to the frontlights distracting the camera. However, Haug had his drivers ordered to not use the slipstream at top speed because of the front axle lift tendency. Long story short: I stood with a couple of Mercedes mechanics in their pits when it happened. Utter shock would be an understatement. We all thought, Peter'd just died 😢
@@ulliandree1129 It made me wonder if it wasnt caused by being in turbulent air and just barely getting enough of the curb to get him airborne. Either way it didnt take much to send those cars flying amazing nobody was seriously injured

@@ulliandree1129 well quick or not doesn't matter, a bmw csl 3.5 is an absolute dream of a car aswell as a 935 Kremer :)
Katayama wore the gloves of the late Shingo Tachi. He later said divine intervention helped him save the car.
Watching this makes me long for the old Speedvision days.

There is something really special about this era of LM. I don't know what it is, but def more special than current generation.
IMO it was the best era because every big manufacturer had a car in the field. There was much more variety in that era.
It might get interesting again next year
@@MotorVidzThis was a good year but the late 80's were better.
Year that Mercedes left Le Mans.

Mercedes CLR starts flying
Danke für den Upload!
man todays cars are amazeing but they really miss the cool factor of these cars.
Late 90s to early 2000s LMP really have an all time design
Belos tempos... good Times 💯🙅👍

Because practice in 1999 le man`s was 3 hours before the start of the race, thats when webbers car flipped
They had fitted additional winglets for the race also, not enough to solve the issue though.
It looks like the Mercedes may have just touched the curbing before it lifted off. First time I noticed that he definetly cut that corner hard
