We just saw a performance of this in Philadelphia, through the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. There was a much simpler setup - no mikes, no projections, just Davone and his pianist. The event was mesmerizing, and deeply moving. It differed somewhat from this performance, since he started with "Leave me loathsome light" from Handel's Semele. This is an aria that I had always thought of as a sort of joke, but here it was infused with meaning and sensitivity. His performance of "Mache dich, mein herze, rein" from the St. Matthew Passion just about broke my heart. An extraordinary experience!

I saw the same performance (shoutout to PCMS). Extraordinary and moving indeed. As for "Mache dich, mein Herze, rein," Tines brought such intensity to the performance, I felt like I was hearing it for the first time--so transported that I believed he was right there with Jesus's body! I'm glad they decided on a simpler setup, especially no distracting projector--Tines's singing more than speaks for itself (so to speak).
