    The Birthplace of the Winds
    Adak
The Black Pearl of the Aleutians
Where the seagulls fly upside down and backwards just to impress you
With a girl behind every tree
Except there are very few trees
I wrote this in 1959 and signed off on Ham Radio with each time I was on the air

What a miracle it is to have access to modern technology. It is cold and raining outside in the UK but thanks to Steven's video I can transport my mind and imagination to Alaska!
I have a large world map on my wall and I look at it everyday. I am constantly in awe of the scale of that part of the world.
Love and blessings to all. Where are you all in the world?

Thanks Steven, I took the time to watch your whole presentation. I'll be visiting one day, I have a H2 Hummer not worried about paying $6 per gallon and love tranquility. I've been to Hawaii three times, one from Vietnam as a patient at trippler on ohau many of your scenes are double ganged there. You can write me, I have a few questions. I'm sure dod have plans for some temporary infrastructure, due to the Taiwan and China debacle. How's the internet, I support several websites with updating for income.

I was there in the Navy in 1964 for 1 year. This was my 1st duty out of Supply School. I was 18 and the drinking age was 21, not a lot of fun! Some of my buddies and I had a Quonset hut and a 49 Mercury that got passed on to the next people coming in when we let. There were a lot of earthquakes there, after while you got used to them so living in Southern California later didn't bother me when they had earthquakes there.

About the only building I recognized was the WWII Chapel and one shot of the barracks and chow hall across from the new, when I was there, Bering Building, I was a BU CN and worked out of PW when I was there in 1957. For off work time I managed the wood working hobby shop that in the Bering Building. The second time I was on Adak was in 1959 and I was with NMCB 10. We lived in the barracks from WWII which were located along side of what was then the main runway for the airport. I know that the barracks was tore down in about 1970 because a billfold I had stolen from me was found and returned when the barracks were being torn down. I enjoyed both tours on Adak. The wind and almost daily earthquakes were taken as normal after a couple winds and quakes. One of the memorable things was the thick leather straps that were added to most vehicles to help keep the doors from being sprung because of the wind. Even saw one door that the strap was cut from the wind and the door was indeed sprung. We had an island holiday when the temp got to 53 F. Sorry to see the island all but deserted now in 2023.

Dad was a fire chief and he worked at Fire Station #1. Upper amulet housing next to BOQ, middle and lower amulet housing below captains Hill. We used to slide down captains Hill behind the Kerry's house/earthquake lab. My jaw dropped when I watched "pirates Gold" because we played where they found the unexploded Japanese bomb!! We were there 68-72. After Adak we moved to Kodiak. Curtis and Doris Summers& Curtson & Carrie.

Steve, I live there from 1984 to 1986. I can name everyone of these buildings that you were looking at because I was on the firefight for the base. But let me give you a few facts that nobody would remember. When I was there, they were expanding the housing. We did not build houses on site but shipped them up and used a very large crane to put them in place. I was there when they opened up the McDonald's, it was a major event, and everybody on the island showed up for the opening, it was the best restaurant in town for quite some time. On top of the hill, where the barracks were lived Navy enlisted, CB and marines. The Marines lived in the biggest building plus there was a bar and a large swimming pool down in the basement. The nuclear weapons that were placed on the island were so secretive, that not even the fire department knew they existed. in 1985 a earthquake happened in the whole base was evacuated to the top of the hill where the barricades were, all this way several hours for the tsunami to hit the base, but it never did. 5 miles from the main base was a small listing post with a smaller base. I spent most of my time there. I have never seen any of the video for that smaller base so I assume nobody knows that its there. There was also a World War 2 submarine base, few miles away from the main base. When I was there, there was an old submarine that was barely visible in the ocean, I don't know what happened to that submarine. I don't know if you remember the sailboat that Jacque Cristo had back then. It used a turbine sail instead of cloth.sails which would turn the screws to move the boat. That sailboat came into port and stayed for about 24 hours, but I never got to meet the crew. Getting to meet Jacques Cristo. would've been awesome. For what it's worth this is some of the things I remember.
