    At that point a massive change in Iran was inevitable. Without Khomeini there are two scenarios: 1) Without Khomeini, Prime minister Bakhtiar manages to negotiate with the more moderate revolutionaries to form a new government, either restoring the constitutional monarchy with maybe the Shah abdicating in favor of his son, or a republic.
    2) The revolution would still happen the same way, but without Khomeini, formation of a theocracy would have lacked in legitimacy. Other than Khomeini, many other Mullahs who were in the theocratic camp were not high enough in rank while the anti-theocracy camp had mullahs like Ayatollah Mohammad Kazem Shariatmadari in their ranks who actually rebelled against Khomeini in early 1980. Iran would still be an Islamic republic but with no supreme leader. The relations with Israel would still be cut though as it was a popular demand of the conservative population.

    • @asapolanski3005
      @asapolanski3005 2 месяца назад +2

      The first one was much more probable. Shariatmandari and other traditional clerics were not much into politics like Khomeini, and the biggest figure who had political influence other than Khomeini, Taleqani, was not a hard-liner and not in favor of political leadership of clergies like what was later established as "Velayat-e Faghih".

    • @Ali-bu6lo
      @Ali-bu6lo 2 месяца назад +2

      @@asapolanski3005 Shariatmandari was against the mullahs being directly in charge like some Caliph or Imam, but he still supported the vague notion of a Islamic republic (as a normal republic with Islam having some influence in the laws) and he did back the Muslim People's Republic Party, which to the best of my knowledge wanted Islamic democracy.
      Taleghani was a moderate but he was also close with the Kudish parties, leftists, the People's Mojahedin (MEK)and many other Islamist groups. Many of those guys wanted a revolution to purge the military and the government.
      Combined with the fact that I doubt Khomeni's death would stop the protests, in fact it would probably intensify them, and Carter persuading the military to stand down would mean the old regime will still fall and Bakhtiar would flee.
      The real change would come during the negotiation for the constitution which without Khomeini would see no Supreme leader being added to it and in Novermber 79, the students storming the US embassy would be cleared out by the military under the orders of Bazargan.

    • @anandm4748

      @@Ali-bu6lo I'm saying that the evidence is overwhelming that the West preferred Khomeini take power, rather than the Communists (who actually were the initial driving force behind the revolution). The west wanted a radical Islamic Iran, to link up with Pakistan and the Afghan Mujahideen to create a "green belt of Islam" on the Soviet Southern flank. This worked, as it was radical Islam that broke the Soviet Union.
      Even without Khomeini himself, his books had already been written and there were more than enough Mullahs willing to implement his program exactly as was intended (Khamenei, Rafsanjani, etc). The Islamic Republic, or a similar system is GOING to happen no matter what - if the CIA can have any say about it. And it's important to remember that Khomeini himself was NOT a high ranking Ayatollah - that was never even necessary, as the high ranking Ayatollahs all supported his revolution initially. They only disagreed with him defying their higher ranks and eventually usurping their power.
      Also, these other Ayatollahs were MORE radical and reactionary than Khomeini in some ways. One such way is the fact that many of them were skeptical of democracy and preferred an Islamic Imamate rather than an Islamic Republic (total clerical rule). They were also in favor of tatbir, an infamous Shiite ritual in which mourners cut themselves until they bleed torrentially, to commemorate Imam Hussein's death in the Battle of Karbala - this was something that Khomeini and Khamenei vehemently opposed and banned.
      Otherwise, it's the Tudeh or MEK that take power, aligning Iran with the Soviet Union and preventing the Afghan Mujahideen, resulting in Soviet dominance over Southwest Asia, and a prolonged Cold War extending well into the 21st century.
      A constitutional monarchy is not happening at this stage. Nobody revolts against a system, just go bring it right back. Iran WAS already a constitutional monarchy, so a revolution just to reestablish it is silly and would definitely be replaced by a Republic or more radical system in short order.

      And now, the truth is that the United States has little alternative but to depend on Israel for much of its Middle Eastern human intelligence. In post-revolutionary Iran, the CIA no longer had a presence there and the CIA's Lebanon station was virtually wiped out in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut. The West relies heavily on Mossad for information about terrorism, radical Islamic movements, weapons proliferation and other Middle East-related events.
      That is why you will not see the US abandon Israel in its war with Hamas, despite being critical of their approach. The humanitarian aid to Gaza is only an attempt to save face with voters. The shared interest Israel and the US have in destroying islamic extremism cannot be overstated.

    The biggest mistake was Carter's. After the Shah left Iran, and a provisional government had formed, the ayatollah decided to return to Iran, from France. The French government called the US, and asked them if they should allow him to leave France or not. Carter stupidly said let him go. If only he had intelligently told them "no". There would have been a government hostile to the US and Israel, but without the maniacal theocrats ruling Iran, that animus would have dissipated over time.

    Wow, thank you so much for this great analysis of the Shah of Iran and its fall. it is 100% accepted by Iranians and is fully correct and they themselves agree with your unbiased correct analysis of the situation.. when I listen to Europeans, who indeed don’t understand much about middle east and they themselves acknowledge it though, they say so much nonsense about the shah, I just want to bang my head at the wall as what they say is only lovely to themselves but it never penetrates the soul of Iranians or even gets accepted by them but what an Israelis says “always” is crafted to perfection as it seems they 100% and even better than Iranians, know Iranians.
    Now it is so great by you, I want to add a very important note to your video at 03:19 when you say Khomeini was upset because Shah’s reform would hurt Islam. Well, in reality, the reforms’ drafts are still there and anyone can study them and they were not against Islam… but the damn Khomeini was indeed starkly disagreeing with them….
    Until then, most of the lands which were given to Iranian poor farmers via the Shah’s land reforms was being controlled by mullahs as they had been donated as religious gifts to them.. But Shah’s land reforms were a disaster to all mullahs, destroying their influence together with powerful landowners forever, hence they starkly rejected them.. on Wikipedia there are so much great declassified as well as detailed articles which one can read to know why the mullahs and Khomeini so starkly rejected shah’s land reform, then with such truth, people will know who these mullahs really were…. Super disgusting creatures they were and still are...

In a year prior to the Revolution, Big Oil contracts with Iran were expiring; however, the companies never sought to renew the contracts with the Shah, which according to him was a blackmail threat. Ultimately the Shah claimed that the Americans and British colluded against him due to his 1973 nationalization and oil price hike. The BBC report also showed a 1980 CIA analysis, which portrays Khomeini's attempts to contact the US as far back as 1963, during John F. Kennedy's administration.
