Actually, knowing how smart they are is what made us stop hunting whales. So maybe we can stop being drama queens and find ways to protect them better.

Complicated calls for us humans, simple elephant language for them. Reminds me of the dolphins and orcas who communicate quite freely across the oceans. Just because our human hearing can't pick up all the ranges of sound waves, we think we are unique somehow.

Wait until you realise that (at least) most "higher mammals", and birds, do-how else would your pet know you're calling for it when you use their name? This is news to absolutely no-one who has ever interacted with animals.
Yes, many animals can recognize different sounds which mean different things, like names. The difference is that the Elephants arent being taught names by us. They are giving themselves names. Also, they are actively using the names themselves unlike most other animals which only responds to the names- not using the names themselves
That old song “If I could talk to the animals”, that I can remember from when I was a kid, comes to mind. You may laugh but with the advances in AI and their a phenomenal ability at pattern recognition etc, we may well be talking to the animals in the not too distant future. At least those with higher intelligence and basic languages like dolphins, elephants etc. Now wouldn’t that be extraordinary!
Awosome how Europeans spend so much time understanding other species but can’t understand the human kind. Or is it that try to learn how to manipulate the human kind?
Not a waste of money. It’s a research study to broaden human understanding of the natural world and animal communication. Imagine having a translator one day that allows humans to communicate with certain animals which could lead to better wildlife management and human animal conflict management.
The video shows they are frequently grazing. So maybe the elder elephants are teaching the (calf) younger ones to do the name-calling properly and not talk with their mouth full because otherwise, if they are not careful, the naming convention could end up as a _"nom-enclature"._ My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.
On the thumbnail there is a mention to abstract thought. How having "names" or understanding eachother while communicating, is a sign of abstract thought?, and how do we know they are using "names" and not something else?
Many animals are much more intelligent than we give them credit for.
Absolutely
Most smarter than us humans 😄
even insects

My stomach speaks elephant.
My tummy began rumbling in response 😂
How beautiful ❤
I've always known that they are clever, but I didn't know this! Wonderful! ❤
Extraordinary and thank you!
No amount of discovery will stop us from destroying them
OK then, how many elephants have you destroyed, Kurtis?

Humans simply aren’t capable of acknowledging that they are not the only thinking being on this planet, but, in fact, quite average
We are anything but average.
Its just what we have been taught to believe since kindergarten, it can be untaught

If I could be born again and choose a profession, I would choose the study and understanding of animal behavior. Far from human chaos
Very interesting. I wonder if there's more info in the calls other than "John come"
I’m picking Big Ears is a popular name.
That is interesting. But packs must have a way to communicate between each other.
There’s no feeling in the world like riding an elephant.
Do they exchange insults and regret doing so too?
Thanks .
What do they think about elephant's painting ?
Colorado State University not Colarado State University 😂 00:54
edit: fixing Uni to University.
They are a German news outlet… they can say unironically because that’s what the European world calls universities.
'Uni' is Australian slang or abbreviation for for 'University'. The reporter sounds Australian.

It takes years to learn how to understand and vocalize names? INTELLIGENCE
So now they need to work out if the "language" is generalized or specific to the family group/heard. or is it regional like dolphins and humans.
Ganpati ❤
Lots of moral reckoning will occur when we realize some species have language and likely even oral history.
Awesome, but do we really want to know what they are saying about us?
lovely

No because they are there hunting the poachers, not the elephant.
