- Welcome to my hair tutorial on breaking the base for dark highlighted hair! In this video, I will be showing you how to create depth and dimension in your hair by adding in back to back babylights (or what I like to call platinum cark babylights) and breaking the base.
Breaking the base refers to lightening the natural hair color at the roots to create a seamless transition into highlights. We're going to achieve that by using a permanent shade at the base and blending that into a demi shade to tone the highlighted hair.

I achieved this look by applying a platinum card babylight throughout to get lift and correct the orange spots, then I used the base break formula to lift and deposit in one step.
And there you have it - a simple and effective way to break the base on dark highlighted hair! Base breaking will help create a natural-looking blend between your natural hair color and your highlights, giving your hair dimension and depth.

Lovely work. Can I ask how there was no gold tones creeping though as the base was so dark when dong the base break? As it's usually so noticeable on alot of people's hair I see they have had a base break due to gold or orange being present. Not a practising stylist now but it's one of the first times I have seen a really great finish.
I think the same, the base looks neutral/cool and thats like never happen 🙄😍
I also wonder HOW she managed to get that tone in the roots with absolutely NO warm lifting (undertones)..?? Are their colors THAT good? In that case, I really need to switch from Joico Vero k pak color to this! =o

Awesome video! I made the mistake of buying the Amazon knock off for the Framar weaving combs. By the time I went to try them, 30 days were up, 😂
Oh no!
Beautiful! Quick question how does the Studio Styling Express fade? Is really warm? I need to get a 10min color line and I'm just so nervous about it getting too dark or not covering 100% grey as well as my question above? Any advice? Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you! SSE fades on tone and not warm. The shades are pretty cool in the N and A series. They are great at gray coverage on dry hair in 10 minutes/15 for stubborn hair.
@Mirella Manelli Can you explain why you didn't go from side to side on that back section? Instead of doing the whole left side in the Back and then going over to the right side in the back. There's still gonna be lifting at different times. Why not do them back and forth from left to right left to right all the way up the back?
I personally like processing one whole side because it makes it easier for me for a wash out. I think its a matter of preference.
I freakin love this 😍 is there a rule of thumb for base breaking when it comes to the client's natural level? Should there be about a 4 level difference between the formula and natural level or does it depend on what the client's hair goals are?
It all depends on the clients goals however I wouldn't try to push the hair past 4 levels in a break because it can get too warm. The higher the level of color used, the cool the shade used. Hope this helps.
What level of the hair is her Natural Color? Mine is similar to hers
What do you do if you did a full highlight and then a base break for the first time and it came out too warm. Like reddish/orange, I tried a root shadow to tone it down and it helped a little bit but it is still present. Is there a fix?
You left it for too long.
Q? Was this a regular client, a new referral, or a walking 🚶♀️?
Hey you pretty
Why can't people use box hair dye
I'd actually go all over and brighten It up alot more!😁
How do it looks as light as possible to me
How so *
That’s not a level 4
I felt the same. Her natural didn’t look like a level 4, it looked lighter unless it’s just the lighting making it appear like it’s lighter…..
