I got to play the first two scenarios with my buddy who Kickstarted this. It was a blast. We really loved the initiative system, as it provided some great choices and “what if’s” during the game. Playing with the cooldown system and the shenanigans was fun, too.
I backed it because I like the red dragon inn universe and never really bothered to learn what game was like. It's without doubt the best board game I've played this year so far 🤩
Instead of plexiglass you could use map tac or get them "plasitified" at a store like staples. This way you can even write on it with a dry erase marker
Our playgroup just started this a couple of days ago. Love the way you just jump right in. Rules are pretty easy. Story is fun so far. Art is awesome. Fun fun game!
Jaws of the Lion is my favorite game and the game that started a years-long oddysey through tabletop adventures with my wife- an experience that nothing compares to. I have said that if I ever made it game, it would basically be a simpler version of Jaws. This looks exactly like what was in my head. Huge kudos to the developers for including fun female characters, meaning I will be picking this up to play with my wife after we exhaust Frosthaven.
Yes! Representation is so super important in games like this! Thank you. My wife is way more apt to enjoy a game like this if she can play a cool female character.
I've just been asking about this. So my kids and I love GH. Two girls, 15 and 13 and one boy 9 1/2. We just finished playing JOTL and WANT to play Gloomhaven "next" but are going to wait on Gloomhaven 2.0 to come out which is like March 2025 or something. I missed backing it and am thinking of just waiting until its on Amazon or I can get it directly from Cephalophair next summer. Anyway, i had thought of getting Tales from The Red Dragon Inn in the meantime. School starts back in a week and we won't have 20 hours a week to game anymore. (I teach at their school so we're all home all summer together.) So yeah, thanks!!
It's WAY more than a beginner's game. Nothing beginner about it! It's far more interesting in terms of tactics and combat choices than almost any other game of its kind.
Another great video! Makes me want to get a copy : ) As someone who loves 70s/80s fantasy art (Les Edwards, Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo et al) can you recommend a game that features great (old) fantasy art? (Outside of Gary Chalk Talisman or hard to buy games like Advanced Heroquest)
There are a lot of RPGs that have classic art. Dungeon Crusade and Dungeon Universalis both has some good old style art. Defenders of the Realm. Dungeon Degenerates is all 80s style punk metal art.
Looks interesting, but the production choices are a turnoff for me, reminds me why I didn't back. Paper mats with enemies printed on them, the huge numbers on the standees (would have preferred numbered stands).
Hey so i got the game and im having fun, but yeah this game has A LOT of tokems. can you direct me to the little organizer you showed in the video, as it is this game takes me 4ever to set up looking through all the baggies, and i have small table space so im constanty going back and forth getting tokens. haha
@@sfgsam2311 I think there's no definition of it, that's only my take on it. So, I personally think it should include at a minimum exploration, loot and combat. I love when it has non combat encounters, a small open narrative, surprises, good amount of loot and a level up system. Exploration is important because of the word crawler. This game is more combat focused and, as said by Daniel, I also consider it more of a combat / skirmish game. But again, only my personal view.
i wanted to get this game because i've heard lots of good things about it from creators whos interest match mine, the price is a little high, wish i could just get a version with tokens instead of minis. i played the demo on TTS and i had a lot of fun solo, its light, but engaging, the characters are varied and theres depth there. cant wait to get it!
Pooky is the Monty Python killer rabbit. Lol! This game has been on my radar, but i missed the crowd funding. Im getting it at retail soon tho. Could the maps be custom printed on Neoprene and copy the enemy cards and reprint then laminate? Probably cost prohibitive.
It looks really interesting. That is my favourite art style for games like that. I feel it needs a narrative story to follow the characters adventures and give it more depth. But maybe it's OK as it is. I like the miniatures but I have started to prefer the colored standees because I don’t have the courage to paint all those miniatures and I hate to look at a gray or one colour miniature. My only problem is that board games prices are sky high and with the unbearable shipping cost we miss a lot of great games. The only choice is to get a few of them and only half priced used copies. If any at all.
There is a narrative! Players read story text at the start and at the end of each scenario. These stories provide a lot of characterization and also explains what you're doing and why. I'd also think the story is pretty good (but I wrote it, so I'm biased!).
As a backer, I was very happy with the final product, I am still playing through the campaign so my gameplay experience is limited, however from what I've seen so far, I'm a happily satisfied customer. One major thing that drew me to backing was the price, the question back then was "are they going to be able to deliver the product as advertised, feels underpriced?" and yes, yes they did deliver. Looking forward to the future of this series. The company strongly supports Red dragon Inn so I think we will see long-term support for Tales.
Fantasy board games have been getting more complex, bloated and expensive over the years. Companies are terrified to been accused of creating "generic" fantasy with simple rules. I personally wish for more on theme, art, story etc. Talisman, for example, can be accused for being roll and move, long, and simple, but I don't think the hate is justified since to this day it is still in print. I hope for art style more like the original editions.
I think Talisman is an amazing game. Every turn involves a choice. These choices are influenced by your condition, the condition of other players, and the emerging lay of the land. It's a simple design that tells a fun story. Simplicity should be a goal in game design.
Sorry. I've just been dealing with a glut of negative comments lately which always point out every little mistake. I can make an hour long video and so many people just point out the 1 second mistake, and it really gets on my nerves! I'm actually thinking about turning comments off on my channel, as they aren't very useful for anything.
You know all too well that everyone here is still 12 years old on the inside, or we wouldn't be here.

I'm so freaking excited for Tales of the Red Dragon Inn 2.0! I late-backed on Kickstarter and expect it to arrive early next year.

It's a big win all around.
Very cool. Thank you for covering this!
My pleasure!
Man I am missing out on all these kickstarters I need to look out for more somehow.
It’s coming to retail.
That is great news I am new board gamer so still finding all my info on different games.
Looks like a lot of fun!

I just commented about JOTL too!!!
Love the intro-image, Ascension style👍🏻 Have to keep an eye out for Red dragon in, it’s on my radar.
I was always kind of interested in the look of Red Dragon Inn but didn't like the take-that aspect. So this game is of great interest to me.
Really great video.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing with us, Daniel! Will be looking at this in retail for sure. Do you know if the KS version had any exclusive content?
I think the boss minis and one of the solo companions were KS only.

Sounds like a perfect match!
I will be looking for this when it is available in the UK.
I am in the UK, and have ordered it from the American Amazon site, arriving this week and can’t wait!
Nice, when is this coming to retail? Mike from One Stop Coop gave an amazing review of this game.
Now. 😊 In Europe we can pre-order it at the moment. It arrives in a month in the shops.
It went to solicitation on August 3rd, so I'd expect to see it on store shelves by the end of the month.
Looks colorful and cute indeed. Not my taste personally but nice recommend for beginning players to dungeon crawlers. Thanks!

do the heroes have standees? I hope they do. I hate wen I have to mix minis and standees.
They do not. I wish they did.
Tks for this great overview! Are there random events/encounters to be drawn in this game?
Not really. It's more focused on the skirmish play.

I thought that said "Spanking Engine" XD
How does it compare to adventure tactics or Altar Quest?
Not sure. I have videos for all three, so check them out, then you’ll be able to compare them.
@@TheDungeonDive did you ever finish Adventure tactics? Is this much better?
Did not. I like Red Dragon more.
Could you laminate the maps?
Maybe? Have to take it somewhere that has a big machine.
This game, its play and its art style-looks both great and terrible all at once. 😂

I just got it at a hobby lobby in the beading section.
@@TheDungeonDive dope Ty.
Check in sporting goods sections for Plano tackle organizers. They typically have removeable lids and work well.
Am I a stupid pretentious elitist if i try to convince my friends that, even if great, this is NOT a dungeon crawler? Great coverage, as usual.
What is the definition of a dungeon crawler?

There are only 12 or so minis, so I don't think those add to the cost much.
It will be at retail later this month. If the price is around $75 I thing that would be a good deal.
That's a good price!
@@TheDungeonDiveI see! I thought all the enemies would have minis too!
Would love a final thoughts on this once you play more.
75$?? Euh... I did a preorder for 100€ (=110$). 😅

12 years old in the 4th grade 😬
