  • The U.S. tested 67 nuclear weapons on the Pacific paradise of the Marshall Islands, tricking the people who lived on Bikini Atoll to leave their homeland “for the good of all mankind.” But the Bikinians didn’t know the U.S. would contaminate their island and make it uninhabitable.
Now nearly 70 years later, many Marshall Islanders have moved to Springdale, Arkansas, nearly 600 miles from the nearest ocean. But as many Marshall Islanders build new lives here, they know Arkansas is not their permanent home, and their nuclear legacy is something both Americans and the next generation of Marshallese need to remember. Tabish Talib traveled to the Ozarks to learn how the Marshallese are staying connected to their roots so far from their home.

My grandmother was taken off her land for "progress". She was put on a plane to NYC and told that she'd have a job and a great life. She was put in a slum and her job was packing apples. She had acres that she was never paid for and it was used to make hotels and play areas for the wealthy. This story happened too many times and my heart hurts for the Marshall Islanders. It's hard to be patriotic and love the country you live in when the only reason you are there is because they exploited your people. I hope that there is a good solution soon. Married until her passing in 2016. Now, I am a widower, we raised our sons and daughters to appreciate culture from the Marshall Islands. Now, in my opinion, no matter what. If the Islands of the Marshall Islands perished. Then it is the obligation of America to accept all Marshallese as Marshallese-Americans and grant American citizenship. Plus continue to pay the land owner payments and Compact funds too. This is the only way to right a wrong. I thank GOD for having me experience life in the Marshall Islands for over 13.8 years. Truth be told, not only Bikini and the three other islands were affected . But nearly all of the islands on the Southern parts of these 4 islands as well (Enewetak, Ronglap, Utrok and Bikini) because the radiation particles were carried by the wind. So there are 2 islands form the Ralik Chain (Islands of the setting Sun) called Jaluit and Namdrik, even though they are not included as "affected islands by radiation" but there were a lot of people from these islands who also suffered from Thyroid cancer and such.
Another fun fact, before the nuclear had taken place all of the fish within each islands' territory were all edible. But now there some fish that are 'poison' (that's what we Islanders call it) and you can not eat them, it depends when you're either within some of the islands in Ratak Chain (Islands of the Rising Sun) or the islands Ralik chain (Islands of the setting sun).
    For example:
Majuro _ Ratak chain - You can eat Bluelined Snapper, but you can't eat a certain Species from the Grouper family (the red colored one)
Jaluit_Ralik Chain - You can not eat the Bluelined Snapper but you can eat the red colored Grouper BUT not the purple ones
When you consume the 'poison' fish, you'll be paralyzed not able to move and your whole body will feel like thousands of sharp needles are piercing through you. If you're unlucky for eating a highly poisoned fish or your body is weak to fight the poison, then you might... well 💀. Yeah, don't try to eat these fish.
Sadly, if we catch a new type of fish that we don't really know about we will use animals such as Cats, Pigs, and Dogs as test subjects to see if they get paralyze after consuming the new looking fish. Sad, but it is what it is ☹

Despite the fact that the U.S Government did all the Nuclear Testings "for the good of all Mankind", we are still facing alot of issues towards going back to islands that are contaminated from the fallouts and yet nothing is being done about it. Our first Compact we received little or nothing compared to the damages, the second compact was a copy of the first with twists. Now the third is on its way and still, I feel that we are being robbed!
