Great vid! Congrats to Kenny on his job at Respawn. I'm excited for E-day but also curious as to what its gonna hold for its Multiplayer. No Rod Fergusson this time around so I'm really curious and interested to see how TC handles E-day. Campaign to MP or whatever the case may be. TC got a great opportunity here to bring back what made Gears so special.
I used to have a friend who worked at Bungie during Destiny, then at 343 during Infinite. And while he wasn't in a leadership position of any type, he was involved with various teams, and it was the best thing to hear him talk about game design, what different teams were working on, their design goals, ideals, philosophy, etc, etc. Really brings me back to hear Kenny talk about things with so much knowledge. 😢😢
Reason why I think they changed the omen is because this is the first gears to implement hit markers. If you think about having hit markers with the classic OG omen it’d look sloppy. This game is easy as is, it used to be a skill to know how hurt an enemy was by the sound they would make or other factors. Imo E-day has to get rid of hit markers and bring back the classic omen. Simple.
Congrats Kenny happy for you man hope the career goes well. A game team would be lucky to have a person like you on their team and working respawn/apex sounds cool
Nice video. I'd love to see more discussions with other people. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about Gears 5. I thought I'd grown out of Gears, but I loaded up Gears 2 and 3 early this year and had a lot of fun despite the lag on those games.
Kenny is right that Horde 5.0 launched with a hero shooter concept. But an update changed that by separating character skins from class abilities. You could play whomever you wanted as whatever class you wanted, a big improvement in my opinion.
Ill be back for gears of war 6. I hope it goes back to mechanics allowing greater skill differential. Active dmg buff, Gears 1.0 weapon sliding, pistol headshots(while standing)GoW 1 or 3 Weapon Balance( if everythings OP nothins OP)
Also about what yozy said,I play MP for gears 5 and for sure I dont "try to be something". Im Too old for that 😂 At this point, Im just looking for a fix lol. Not that deep. Hoping Eday comes thru for us all. Peace❤
41:53 i think the modern gaming era (as far as mechanics) started when momentum and real physics started being left out. halo used to have momentum. you can see it by how it carries over on a grav lift, or when you fall onto a slope, the hammer, the vehicles, etc. now we're at a point where we're seeing grenade jumping being manually added in infinite, and you can fall from any height and clamber an edge. just the fact that you can go full speed instantly in both directions when you strafe is a bad sign. in h3 your character had to slow down before counter strafing, then had to speed up again. i think that "clunkiness" is essential in halo as well. modern games make everything way too accessible, leading unreadable movement. mechanics from old games that came from the physics and stuff ended up being features later on; just press a button and you can do this "tech" that used to require skill
100% agree about the clunkiness of the old gears games. I honestly had high hopes that GoW Eday was going to be a great game and they were going to take out some of the things I think shouldn’t be in this game but after listening to you two talk about the things that made the old gears games great and what it’s progressed into im starting to lose faith. I just don’t think we will ever go back to the golden era of GoW unless it’s a mod or a fan made version. I genuinely just don’t see it happening
At 49:00, I actually fully enjoyed everything Kenny has to say. Im not familiar with him so much other than hes a pro. But hearing icy and kenny talk about all the things, has been fully enjoyable. At first I was actually like over and hour?? Ugh. I am a type who dislikes podcast to begin with. Talking on and on, yea nah. But this video was different for some reason. I always enjoy inside the mind of icy. To continue about the 49 min mark, and what kenny said, Im here for more than the rage. GG 🎮🎙🧊
29:20, This is going to happen often as you get older ass the things you loved evolve, and it happens in every category known to man (technology, entertainment, medicine, language, acceptable behavior, etc.), the world and the things in it change and longing for the past will only cause resentment in the present and disgust for the future. 30:06, this conversation about skill level reminds me of a quote from the movie Color of Money (where the two main pool players are discussing the technical skill of Straight Pool, an older game, vs the sloppy/banger play of 9-ball which is the game of today) and it goes like this: _But the thing is, even if it is just for bangers, everybody's doing it. If everybody's doing it, there's a lot of guys doing it. A lot of guys doing it - but only one guy can be the best._ Gears 1 was my game, and I'm older than both of you, and you guys are too young to be clinging to past like you are.
I don't know if I agree with you about people not being able to shine through like support and such. I see quite a few people who play angles and defensive. The majority tend to just bully though. Stacks who cros and angle you out. But the major problem is connection. One game I'm doing 25 and 8 and the next I'm 5 and 15. It might be against the same players.
i feel like the 2 biggest problems is how easy they made the game and how trash the ranked mode is. literally the two types of problems you never want in a competitive game
I don't get how people can say this game is easy. The player base is one of the highest skilled overall of just about any Gears game at this point like you join a QP FFA and you'll have multiple players stomping the majority of the lobby half the time. So what metric are we going by? This sounds like something primarily pro and high level players complain about which is fine but game developers don't make games solely for pro players. I'm one of 3 people I know who play this game, most people I know whove tried it don't play it because it's too difficult and they get wallbounced and stomped to hell online and the other guys I do know that play don't play ranked for the same reason and we've all been playing since 2. We're not the best but we're not the worst I've gotten better recently mainly because of the time I've put in with intention but most players aren't going to take the time to practice like that.
This game has a lot of problems(like you mentioned with ranked that I think should be fixed and provide a much more straightforward path to improvement but I think this game being too easy is not at the top of the list. Maybe they could fix that for those who think so by making some more dedicated playlists or something for casuals and serious players but it's not easy to make a game tuned for serious and casual players alike. At this point I don't think they should intentionally be trying to make the game easier like Gears has always had a higher learning curve that other shooters but I don't think they need to be intentionally making it more difficult either, at least for the casual game modes.
I swear people that want a small chunk range dont want chunks in the game ita crazy they want the chainsaw to have a bigger chunk range then the shotgun keyword gun
I started with gears 4 with the gears bundle had gears 1-jd. I wasnt the best but i felt consistent in that game, gears 5 i have no idea where my shots go or ehat the chunk range is :(. I play on pc but bought an xbox control to play 5 so i can feel like i was playing four but i was sooooooo bad, i couldnt blind fire over cover cuz id miss 100% of the time and hip firing wasnt much. It wasnt until i started using mnk that i started to feel like gears 4 but recently i feel like im going back to missing shots like how i was using my xbox remote
On the future of Gears: While I agree with Icy that later installments of Gears felt a bit like graphical upgrades with the soul missing, and Kenny's points on how UE5 has the potential to create some wonderful new gameplay mechanics by opening doors of creativity by way of it's sheer technical prowess, have we considered that the gameplay of Gears itself might NEED a bit of a reboot too? Think back when Halo introduced sprinting, people were upset but I say the devs turned the game into something with a bit more longevity. I'd be mad as well if they added something like sliding, or abilities but it we'll just have to wait and see. So long as it's actually fun to play. But incentives, tuning, immersion, and consistency should take priority over it's visuals
OMFG 33:30 U ARE RIGHT 100% THIS IS NOT JUST GEARS THOUGH! I THINK CALL OF DUTY HAS THIS PERFECT LIKE ITS STILL.HARD TO MISS KINDA OF PC AND EVEN NEW GEN XBOX ITS TO EASY TO SHOOT !!! IF A GAME IS TO EASY ITS NOT FUN YOU ARE RIGHT NIC THEY NEED TO REPLICATE HOW HARD it was for GEARs 1 2 3 WAS MECHNICALLY IN EDAY and to shoot ect
I think a Gears Of War BR in the Hollow or in the new Kelona city with Emulsion/the Kryll as the gas would be FIRE, would be such a different take on BR having the cover aspect on a bigger scale than multiplayer and would 100% bring new eyes to the game. Definitely would need a good ranked system for multi and the BR if they were to do it
would give so much opportunity to design new guns and use the vehicles and hollow creatures in the universe outside of the campaign. Would be so cool if there was esports for it too, seeing the team play, controlling the map using power weapons etc
Icy i been watching ur vids since the beginning of gears 5. I remember playing gears 2 and 3 when little but i never started playing competitively until late gears 4 and gears 5 on operation 3. Mainly because i was young and didnt have money to get my own things like the latest Xbox. But i wanna ask which gears would u consider the best defining multiplayer experience. I ask this because im not sure if i know what a definitive gears multiplayer experience feels like because i started playing so late. I still consider gears 5 to have many flaws compared to the other gears games and i agree with so many things u were saying about the skill gap and i find myself complaining about everything u complain about before i watch ur videos. But i wasnt there for gears 2 or 3 prime so im not sure i know what real skill is in gears of war. I know gears isnt all about wallbouncing and spazzing out on gnasher lobbies. But most my multiplayer experience was gears 5. I wanna go back to the older games and get to know what gears multiplayer really feels like since i wasnt there for their prime. Which one should i play.
I think if I'm taking nostalgia out of the equation Gears of War 3 is the best overall multiplayer experience. You have a great unlock system, multiple great casual modes such as beast mode, horde, etc. The game had a bunch of incentive to play for long periods of time with the Onyx medals and things of that nature. The game was far from perfect but it also allowed players to express their natural playstyles whether that be super aggressive or more passive. I appreciate and love each of the first 3 titles for many reasons but if I had to take bias out as well I would say Gears of War 3 stands alone in terms of MP
@@RedIcy thanks icy. I'ma go handle that. Big fan of ur stuff. Keep it up cuz ur comeback when gears e day hits will be legendary. I'll be watching when it happens.
Problem with listening to fans is fans of gears 1 dont even play anymore. My whole friends list pretty much quit when gears 2 came out. If the lead guy hasnt played gears 1 then hes not able to understand what made gears good in the first place and why it has multiplayer to this day
Gears 5 should have never been released on Xbox One. I think the hardware really held the game back dramatically. I legit think thats the reason it feels soulless...like all the compute went into the extra layers of code for the movement system, so there was nothing left for the details/animations that make up the feeling of the game...just my theory. We can blame Microsoft for appointing braindead leaders to develop this franchise...How any Gears fan can green light Arcade mode is beyond me. It's actually unforgivable. Also, Rod is washed and Escape was dead on arrival...how much time and money went into that? Jesus Christ. That's that corporate, old head shit. They pumped and dumped GOW with game pass. If they were after longevity, we would have a ranking system and a map creator at the very least. It's been damage mitigation from the beginning. The suits have devs looking at fucking data instead of playing the game, listening to feedback from children, making changes in order to "retain customers" instead of making a fucking good game. It's supposed to be an art. Gears 5 is a perfect example of trying to please everyone. I'm actually glad it backfired. We'll get decent game from E-Day, and the franchise will reboot on next gen with a banger...just in time for me to be completely washed at video games in general. Lol.
lot of complaining, gears will never be perfect, but if this game is so trash, upload content of ur gears 2-3 and and you'll see how many ppl care...ppl dnt, regarless of the good or bad the game is, gamers move fowards.. i think u couldnt evolved in this gears that u trash it all the time.. is like a former champ talking about his glory yrs, gears 5 closed the gap on skill and centered around team work, and that's what ppl hate..
What CAN happen to gears e day is the same thing thing that happened to deadspace 1 remastered, no one had faith in EA but they did it better than the actual creators of the og deadspace. Time well till :).
Most gears pro players are completely lost when it comes to what makes a good Gears game, and it's counterintuitive bc they really just need to no-life and play 10+ hrs/ day with literally no perspective on anything, case and point "jUsT adapT" at beginning of Gears 5.
Congratulations to Kenny on his job. Respawn is a great studio.

I never liked hit markers.
Might be a hot take but I think they should minimalize the HUD.
I took my hit markers off bc i hated it so much honestly
thanks for the video Nicholas, good conversation. I hope E-day comes out with the same flow as it did originally with GOW!
Congrats Kenny happy for you man hope the career goes well. A game team would be lucky to have a person like you on their team and working respawn/apex sounds cool
1:21:38 Icy is POPPING off on them. Tell it how it is! These games are just literally insuperior to the originals.

Excellent video boys. Lots of great points
33:50. Exactly. The wall bouncing is just that. Hectic. I miss the way a 19-1 raven felt back in gears 1.
Good conversation

Insightful from a couple of players with experience. I have been playing GoW since GoW1 launch. The series has lost its way.
Just so you get some feedback, I really enjoyed this form of video icy. Keep it up man.
1:00:30 its called pit and it fucking sucks if you get spawned on the bottom or middle elevations

1:04:00 raven down is my favorite map.
Flat and small. Constant action.
In gears 5 it is probably ritual.

Love this game… the only reason why we are here to watch your videos is because we love the game
You love me
you can see clucky as csgo strafing too, any new player is going to hate having to counterstrafe just to shoot someone after playing fortnite
56:26 there's no way anyone thinks like that
as a massive gears fan, gears 1 will always be the best! played that game so much no im not talking the ue the og game!
They just have to put money in and listen to OG Fans and Pros, that's it.
