some songs are so difficult to sing live......
So many singers use the "I was sick that day" excuse when they have a bad performance that it's starting to lose credibility.
Mariah was sick on her bad one too and a few weeks later she hit the high notes perfectly in that same song

I appreciate how she contextualizes all of the performances because she actually knows what's involved in singing at such a level. So easy, and stupid, to be sharply critical when you've got no idea what it takes.
Sia was so sick that day... But it was a tv live show, she couldn't quit. She cried in backstage because che could barely speak that day but she did her best on stage. She is such a pro and such an amazing human being!
At least she performed many others would have just let their fans down. Everyone has an off day, but even Sia"s off day is far better than my best day!

What's frustrating with those videos, aside from them seeming a bit arbitrary, is for the "worst" recording, they've isolated the vocals where they haven't for the "best." If they wanted to do a fair comparison, they should do isolated vocals or backing singer/click track for both.

I really don't think that Taylor lipped that...
And the Sia first one was because she was super sick that day, but didn't want to cancle on all the fans who were already out there.. She did that to all the songs that performance, it was a mess, but good for her for thinking of her fans, and for not lipping.

The Katy Perry one isn’t fair...Beth definitely picked up on that. But here’s the deal. That was a board mix. Very little music, no ambience, nothing. Live board mixes sound awful if you’re even the tiniest bit off and that goes for any instrument. They’re brutally unforgiving in every possible way.
Ambience is super important when it comes to our perception of sound. Even when you’re in a small room, the sound coming back at you from the walls, floor and ceiling have a major influence on what you’re hearing. So when we hear something like a board mix, it sounds very unnatural, sterile and “bad”. I can guarantee that what the crowd heard was 1000% better...and only for the fact that it had ambience and musical context.
Maybe not in this particukar case, but Katy Perry gives consistently awful live performances if you watch a lot of her videos.
6:23 You're right about the mic-those Shure SM-7B mics are great for all kinds of vocal work. It's why a lot of radio stations use them

The isolated recordings of a singer's (or musician's) earpiece monitor sometimes makes you wonder how they perform at all.
Katy Perry on that outdoor performance reminds me of a "leaked" vocal by Enrique Eglasias. He talked about how on these outdoor good morning america type shows you can not hear anything, not yourself, and they are often using a prerecorded track, but to get into it he had to sing for real, even though he could not hear himself, and so you get what we got with Katy Perry, I think.

I know ur being sarcastic I’ve seen some performances of her that she was exhausted and overdoing it…but she is a great live vocalist considering she does acrobatic while giving us great vocals

when I have an off night, I know it & it affects my confidence which in turn affects my performance. But when I'm on...I'm on. it's the on times that keeps me going
I don't think the second Taylor Swift performance was lip synced. You said the back bend thing is hard to support, but that's kind of Taylor's thing for hitting high notes. She leans back and tilts her mic. Also, in other points of that performance, you could tell she was singing live by her laughing mid-word. But, I could be wrong 🤷♀️.

You're right, it's easy to mock a bad performance, but as u say most of them have worked very hard with their voices to be where they are. And some popular singers are bad singers who rely on technology to save them...

I'd love to see you react to Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius. I've seen them live so many times, and they're on fucking point every time. They are more in synch than any two singers I've ever heard in my life.

The worst always comes in vocal isolation and the second one comes with the full audio and good mixed. It makes hard to do the judgement from there. Maybe if both were in vocal isolation it would be better for us to hear only the singer. And even when you're singing out of tune it could sound perfect on the final mix.
Mariah never sounded better than her first record. Her live show at the Apollo when she was 20 is a whole other level.
I quite like hearing duff notes, to be honest. Not too many of them, but the occasional duff note suggests they're singing live.

Miley's vid in the second one which was name as her best ,well the truth is miley is sick in that day but she insist to perform and I don't agree too that the vid is her best maybe I prefer to do some reaction kinda like new vid for her best kinda year 2017 or 18 . I mean put other vid in her best.
I thought she did good on that sick performance, After se belted that note her throat was harshed out, though,, and she had to build back her strength. Her best live is "I'll take care of you" at Sydney Opera House.

Sia's voice wasn't warmed up for that morning singing and it cracked in the middle of the song, so she said sorry in the middle of it and sang it lower cause it wasn't reaching the notes

These "bad" performances are normal... pro singers get tired especially during concerts or guestings and they may not give the best performance but you can see that they try... it's just our bodies have certain threshold of fatigue that even pros can't handle...

Wow...until Mariah Carey I couldn't have named any of them! I'm old, I prefer the Deep Purple, Focus, and all the other classic rock reviews you do. Having said that, can't some of the performances by the ladies be influenced by equipment, venues etc. as well as being sick or having an off day etc. One of the worst was the gal singing in the street (maybe on some morning TV show?), so maybe they just through a quick audio rig together and the music didn't bounce around like indoors it just sailed off into the abyss of our atmosphere. On the old note, does anyone make music with instruments anymore or is it all just computer generated cr@p?

Do you remember when you reviewed Babymetal - there you were impressed with Suzuka Nakomoto's voice and her ability to sing on key even though she was jumping and dancing. Now I have heard Suzuka sing live many times - and have not yet experienced that she had an off day. That's probably why Babymetal is voted one of the top ten rock bands of all time.
Steen Bronke it’s part of the idol image and the Japanese are perfectionists. If a potential idol can’t put up a good performance consistently with their routines, they’ll get dropped before they have a chance at making it big.
