Model etiquette! Or lack of it, I'm with you! Over the years I've developed a system for reducing flake-outs, which has reduced my no-shows to about 10% from 50%! 1. Never book more than a week ahead, (models have short memories and don't keep diaries). 2. Always ask for a written response within 24hrs when texting booking details to confirm the shoot; or the shoot is cancelled. 3. Always make a personal phone call 24hrs ahead of the shoot to remind, and text if they don't pick up, and 4. Make another personal phone call 2 hours ahead of the shoot, and if they don't answer, leave a voice mail and text message saying if they don't respond within half an hour the shoot is cancelled. Oh, and 5. If they are a flake-out no show after all that, block them by every means possible so they can't waste your time in future! Works for me! Keep it up guys, lovin' the poddies :)
Absolutely loved this! You guys are the most entertaining, genuine people. Anyone who has a problem with your take on life, or the choices you make can get stuffed. Love the content, love you guys.
Coffee… Kureg makes moderately small coffee makers you should get one and pack it in your camera case. V-Flats… I’ve been to several photo schools and studio’s and had never heard of V-Flats until I saw your RUclips channel. This was actually a pretty good podcast. This is the first time I’ve heard you really discussing what it takes to get your workshops going.
This has to be your best podcast yet! Loved it, I was rolling around laughing the entire time. Glad you guys made it safely back home. I was starting to fear for your sanity 😊
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer If you ever stay in rural Pennsylvania, you might have to place a tall pine board the length of the bed and have two aunties in the room off camera to avoid scandal, LOL.
I’m just a hobbyist with a small home studio. Reliability of models of something I struggle with. I’ve had several tfp and even paid shoots arranged where the model has cancelled within a couple of hours of shoot time. Or turned up a bit late or even an hour late. It often feels like it is treated as a shoot is arranged unless they find something better to do. Enjoyed the episode again. Not sure I could manage 4 weeks away with my boss!
I subscribe to a YT channel produced by a former fashion model, now photographer/vlogger. She did at least one episode directed at every little detail to work with novice models because having been a model and now shooting model hopefuls, she knows how to prepare for those pitfalls. Peter and Bec are running on another level though.
Oh, and I’ve almost hyperventilated in B&H. Shopping online is definitely better but you do have to go at least once to watch the crazy “aerial railroad”. I had fun trying to spot my cart.. when I had money to buy useless crap!
Welcome to America on finding models. I work with them once and if they have their phone or are late, I never work with them again. This is why I usually also don't like working with Internet models.
I have friends like you and Bec and I feel you about the "are you guys a couple" thing. One of my best friends is young enough to be my daughter and people have asked us about that for years LOL I'm glad that you guys are so close. makes work not work when you can have fun with it.
B&H is an absolutely must experience in your life, shopping experience. They seem to have and to know absolutely everything. Just some of the sales people are a little 'spooky' .... am I able to say that and not get cancelled???
Many thanks for this new podcast session. You are not going to believe it, but you have read my mind, because one of the questions I had in my mind to make you is what colour you would use, excluding BW, in photography, and here I have the answer: golden tones. I personally don’t like gold (regardless its market value), I prefer silver, by the way, but I like a lot golden tones. Starting from the lightest, that is the separation pillow, the sheets, the RaRa’s t-shirt and the lamp; then, in the middle, the skin that includes arms, neck and face; and ending with the dark clothes, air and black eyes. And obviously all tones in between, specially provided by the wooden bed headboard. Excellent! It has been a very good idea to produce these podcast because the audience can see the real Peter and Bec, and therefore your work gains in credibility. Regarding the difficulty to find models, I have some questions, suggestions and comments. 1) If some of the photographers are shooting models for the first time in the workshops, why don’t you look for non-professional models, since this would probably be their situation in their work? 2) If professional models don’t seem to be much interested in the photography sessions, why don’t you look, again, for non-professional models that would love to be in from of cameras? If you bring non-professional models, you can reduce the rate (I believe some of them will even be willing to pose for free since having so many cameras pointing to them would be a please for them) and have standby models (that can also learn by watching who photographers interact with them). 3) To motivate the models that are going to pose in the workshops, why don’t you have a 3-party video call (Peter, Bec, model and one of the photographers) to gain commitment? 4) I think there is a battle between traditional photographers and smartphone makers, please keep on demonstrating that professional photography cannot be replaced by these smartphone madness fibber. 5) If the attenders to the workshops are aware that they will find it so difficult to find models, wouldn’t this discourage them after the workshop is finish? 6) Why don’t you create an email account, with a name like: “i-want-to-pose”, where pro and non-pro models can request to pose for coming workshops or for the photographers that have attended your workshops? In this way you can link models with photographers.
Great podcast again Massive Anthony Bourdain fan here, his death is a major loss for all of us !! Food brings us all together, that was/is the message !! Thanks for sharing guys, have a great weekend !
Americans and their coffee. I worked on the Avatar shoot here in NZ, and despite having multiple 2 group coffee machines and trained baristas on set, the Americans would turn up with boxes of drip coffee from Starbucks. 😂 I love these chats so much.
Don't worry about having a good moan - you are justified. I've had similar experiences with models with regards to mobile phone use. Everything is Instagram reels these days. They like to take a short video of themselves before shooting. I'm an amateur and I mostly use a local studio but the models aren't really that bad. They don't take up too much time and anyway they're usually on their phone when we're setting up lights etc. I can believe that there are some frustrating models out there though who are a right pain. As for V-flats - I watch Daniel Norton on here who is based in New York and he's always using them.
I agree with you, Peter, about supporting domestic product. Sooooo, same story with your photography equipment? Not being a dolt, but are there enough Aus manufacturers for your needs? By the way, I’m loving this bickering between you two. It’s hilarious, thanks for being real.
Parts of that were like listening to a Tarantino script lol That was fun 👍🏻 What is your experience or thinking of getting models from ModelMayhem especially for photographers with very little experience?
I'm curious if it's just an American thing now. I've had a lot of experience with canceling and no-shows. Even to this day. I assumed it was an age thing, the 30s and under. Models traveling to America from overseas have ALL been great though, so maybe theres something to this. But now I need to travel more just to test it.
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer haha thanx! I also googled what exactly it is, as we don’t know it here in Germany. Was just laughing as you mentioned it in your todays talk. Your bar is awesome btw Peter ✌🏻

About half the time models don't show up to shoots , on average. So what i do is i just plan multiple shoots for a idea i have, usually 2-3, so i get the thing i want to make done :D. Just the way you gotta work. Assume they are not going to show up. They have zero respect for other peoples time and effort. And you are not allowed to get mad at them at all because that is just rude.
Anyone that has watched even one epidoe on youtube should know you two are working partners not lovers. Follow Bec on Instagram and you know she has a long term relationship. But people always have to assume the worst. When the internet first hit big in the mid/late 90's we all though it would unite us and educate us but the reality is that is has done the opposite for the most part. I weep for the future. But I do love your channel and how much I have learned about photography and lighting as well as how fun and humorous your both are. Brightens my day to see a new post from you two kind souls. Peace
Models that nc/ns or last minute cancellation is one of the reasons I have scaled back my model photography. Last weekend i had one nc/ns. The next day she said she got a new phone and the shoot completely slipped her mind. Bye, bye
Models wanting to collaborate are the most flaky of all! ugh... I had one model cancel on me while she was on the way to the studio I rented because "Her boyfriend broke up with her" while she was coming to the studio. Later, I was working with an MUA who booked four models and the same model was one of her four... and of course she was a no show. She has since messaged me as if she doesn't remember me asking if I would collaborate with her. haha... Not gonna happen! If they pay for the shoot, however, they always show up. Especially since I don't give a refund, so while I do like to do personal projects sometimes and the models for those shoots are collaborating with me, I only use models who have first hired me to shoot for their portfolio as a sort of test.
oh no the rabbit! Peter's amused, Bec is shocked. im just in awe. just because youre married Peter and you have a boyfriend Bec, means NOTHING. lots and lots of people in relationships, have other relationships outside of their primary...
