Saw this band at Grand Nationals and was thrilled for their success. Enjoyed their performance and the kids and 'entourage' (parents, etc.) were enjoyable. So glad for their success at Grand Nationals.
this band is just full of surprises. who would've ever thought to put a ensemble inside a giant box??!! crazy. They sound good, they look good. But at some spots I was thinking "is that necessary??". But they won the whole thing so cant complain
Amazing show visually and musically. It just made me happy to watch. Outstanding use of color! I was glad that the Texas bands didn't dominate grand nationals this year though! I'm sorry but I am a little bit biased. You got to love a band that wears all white uniforms though!
Haha that's because a lot of the Texas bands didn't go to BOA Natinals...usually of the top 10 bands from finals at least 4 or 5 are from Texas...ALOT of good bands didn't go this year :(
This was the first time Flower Mound HS has been to a nationals competition and this was the 1st year we made it to Texas State Finals in San Antonio. Great year for our band and we'll be back for sure. Flower Mound Marcus HS and Hebron High School (all in the same school district) are also tops in our area but Hebron HS principal would not let them make the trip. Marcus HS won State this year. Too bad!
Texas didn't dominate because the best bands were busy at the UIL State Marching Band Contest in 2014. The State Marching Contest is held every two years and the year in between, the best bands go to Indiannapolis. The Texas State Marching Band Contest is actually more difficult than the Grand Nationals. Some of the finalist at the Grand Nationals would not even place in the Texas State Band Marching Contest.
Kenneth Mills Exactly, my good sir. At UTSA the director who came from California said that in highschool, all he heard was about how good the Texas H.S. Marching Bands were. The performance is still great though in this video. But, it's pretty true what you said.
Our show was based on the environmental artwork of two artists, Christo and Jenne-Claude. Part one is called The Gates, based on a piece of the same title. Though our gates weren't quite what the artists did, those who are familiar with their work would recognize them. Part two was called Fabric Islands, based on a piece called Surrounded Islands, in which they lined the coast of a couple islands in neon pink fabric. (Hence the neon pink fabric that was used) Part three was called The Umbrellas, based on a piece that was originally Jeanne-Claude's idea. Our show designer, while writing drill and picking music, wanted this part to be dedicated to her memory, as she died a few years ago. Part four was a conglomeration of those three parts. We ended up greatly changing the ending drill, which seemed to work in our favor. Also a cool thing, the artist saw our show somehow and sent us a letter with signed post cards of the pieces we depicted. This past weekend we finished 6th at BOA Grand Nationals, with a score of 90.15. The perfect conclusion to our amazing season of firsts.
PERFORMING THEIR 2011 SHOW, **inaudible mumble** USBANDS IS PROUD TO PRESENT, THAT ONE HIGH SCHOOL WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE, FUNDING, AND CONNECTIONS. YOU MAY NOW TAKE THE WELL GROOMED FIELD AND NOT A PARKING LOT IN HOLYSHITYOURBANDISHUGE OPEN COMPETITION. -What 1A bands think of 6 open bands.
Funding??? I'm pretty sure that when this band does fundraisers EVERYONE participates in them...and sells more than asked in able to purchase everything they need for their marching show...yes there's more people, but that's no reason to hate on bigger bands...look at Canton only a 4A school and yet they usually don't have all the bells and whistles but their sound is always amazing and they usually come out on top every year they go to state...so yea!
Funding doesn't play as near as much of a role as you'd think. I come from a band who now does BOA, but used to do USBands. We were Class 5 Open, and fairly competitive. We almost won USBands Nationals back in '09. Anyway, we live right outside one of Yahoo!'s Top Ten Poorest Cities. There are other big bands in America that aren't really from that great of an area economically. It's all about the fundraising, and most importantly, the parents and students, no matter how hard they have to work to achieve the final product.
Each student has to pay $1000 to participate in the Competition Band at FMHS when the band goes to grand nats. If the band isn't going to grand nats, or your not competing in competition band, the normal fee is around $500 - $600
Juxta position Thank you for pointing that out...that is information I did not know. But, for a 1st time appearance, they did very well. So many new high schools, it is hard to keep up with the new ones.
Kenneth Mills it takes more than a 1 rating to make state and state finals. Most regions only give a few twos meaning almost all bands advance to area. This is a competition they beat people to make it here.
Little did the other bands know Flo mo would win super regionals the next 2 year's in a row and win state 2 years later

That is some amazing drill and guard design.

but they didn't...
Congrats to Flower Mound on winning the Arlington regional this year! I expect great things at San Antonio!
Well I'm glad we didn't let you down haha
Stunning!!
I also wish they did more with the drum line. like a lot more

Kenneth Mills Texas State Marching band in San Antonio and Indianapolis were a few weeks apart. What are you talking about?
Extremely clean marching and great sound! But I don't know what their show is even about, which is sort of a problem!
their technique *shudders*

Wow. Dawson has never advanced to BOA finals.

It's not exactly to hate on big bands, it's sort of a joke on both sides.
***** This is the first time they made it to state UIL since the school opened in 1999.

What are the names to the song selections?
The last piece is Belshazzar's Feast: X. Allegro
Whiteha
Not much impressed with this performance...I suspect their reputation from previous wins helped get them a #1 rating.
Kenneth Mills what are you even talking about
Juxta position Thank you for pointing that out...that is information I did not know. But, for a 1st time appearance, they did very well. So many new high schools, it is hard to keep up with the new ones.
its just confusing because they are all in the same mile distance lol. Its fine
