Just to clarify after so many people got offended. I made this video to help other people before they come to Australia. A common search phrase is ‘things I wish I knew before coming to Oz’ that’s why I chose that title! I have been researching before I went to Australia so I kind of knew about the weather etc. but even if you look at a map you don’t realize how big the distances are. Same with the other things, I never knew you can do a ski season etc.
Hahaha I've no idea why some people get offended though I am a bit confused as to why people would tell you that Australia doesn't get cold?? Weird!
Aussies are pretty rude on sites like this and are great at being smart arses even when they know someone is from overseas and won't say something perfectly or realize something about a new country. So don't sweat the rude bastards - and yes I am an Aussie
Where you pay $7 for Bananas ?-Which time of year was it? I can go to my local Aldi &buy them for $3AU per kilo, maybe $3.50-$3.60/kg at Woolworths/Coles. High wages= high prices. It’s all relative. Australia has a high Alcohol tax, so the stronger the alcohol like whiskey or vodka, then the tax will be higher than it is on a beer. By the way, where do you get a bottle ( when you say bottle , I hope you mean a 700ml bottle) of Vodka for €4 ? You smuggled it over from Poland? Yes alcohol is cheaper i Europe overall, but Europeans don’t drink as much as Aussie’s do( per person) ,so the Alcohol doesn’t need to have such highs taxes on it..

I agree with what you've said. Re the size of the country, it's not unusual to accept the information on an intellectual basis but still be surprised by the reality. I knew a fellow who's wife's parents were German, after reunification there were a lot of visits by relations who hadn't seen each other in years. I heard a few stories....

When the video started, I thought you were English. Then when you said you were from Germany I thought you speak good English but by the end of the video I swear I could hear the Australian accent starting to creep in.

@Timyra Jenkins Spider's are not that big, and if you're in the city, you probably won't see any. As for snakes , l haven't seen one in the 43 years l've been here in Melbourne. Visa is 3 months, l think you can get it extended. You need at least $6,000 Australian dollars a month, especially if you're gonna travel around nearly every day. Don't have more that $10,000 in cash on you when you arrive at an Australian airport otherwise you will get a fine. And don't have any porn on your phone, because custom officials at the airport will destroy your phone. And you will have to buy a new one. And don't bring food, it might get destroyed too. A common misconception about Australia from certain countries is that it’s always hot, I mean remember the wildfires? But yeah that’s definitely one thing you should do before moving to a while different country

Whenever I go on holiday I check the weather patterns from previous year as well as days leading up to my holiday. This is regardless of what I heard from people.

Super interesting to get your perspective because I have lived in Sydney my whole life. You're pretty accurate with these.
Not sure where you are shopping but my vegetables and fruit purchases are the cheapest items on the list and I usually buy the best quality and in season items available. I find the frozen conveinience foods and cleaning products to be the most costly. I live in the southern suburbs of Perth and I know country areas are more expensive, you mentioned Broome, I have not been there for years but it was definitely be one of the most expensive places to shop in Western Australia when I was there. Good honest information, great accent you have. Travel safe.

I'm an Aussie and have travelled the world in my younger days, and found these things similar, so it's learning as you go along. I bought bananas yesterday for $3.00 a kg, which is the norm.
Gets paid $24/hr picking vegetables and can’t understand why fresh food costs so much :)
I do get it. I just don’t get why ordering a salad costs $18 and a burger is $10 even on a cattle farm you get $24 an hour so why is unhealthy food always so much cheaper?
And also you would be surprised how many vegetables and fruit we picked in an hour 😅
travelwithlille you’re not wrong, I was just poking fun a bit! All the shit processed food in the supermarket is also pretty cheap even though it includes a 10% GST in the price whereas fresh produce does not. Another good example would be in the fresh produce section often there will be both local and imported garlic (often from Japan but sometimes Europe). The local garlic will be 50% more or sometimes even double the price.

I'm born and live in Sydney. One Friday after work I had a few drinks (Australian for- who's counting?) with an English friend of mine. We decided to go to another pub. As we entered the bouncer says, "Good evening." There were four guys behind us and the bouncer gave that you're too drunk line. So, two drunk thirty somethings in business suits are acceptable but four sober early twenties in casual clothes are not. In short, too drunk can be an excuse used when they mean, we think you are not the clients we are looking for.

Wrong girl to ask. Watch 50 RUclips videos produced by backpackers on travel in Australia and you'll learn the truth. Come in early autumn (feb) and stay through spring (nov), not summer if you can't handle 32 to 36c and 75 to100% humidity in Queensland or 34 to 42c heat with less humidity in N.S.W. Yeah agreed, don't use information from this girl, no facts. I lived in Europe for 10 years I have a Dutch wife we shopped in Germany before returning to Australia we decided to do a comparison of normal shipping prices. In the end it's all comparable, yes some things are more expensive and also cheaper, day to day living prices are comparable in the end. Also if you do compare prices make sure to do it correctly, brand for brand or house brand for house brand.
Depends on what part of Australia you are referring to, some parts are unbearably hot and humid all year round (northern Australia). Southern Australia has four seasons, but can be blazing hot in the summer months. Melbourne can get into the mid forties Celsius for a couple of days, then drop back to under twenty Celsius.

Fresh produce is seasonal in Australia. Any fresh produce that's out of season usually becomes expensive.
Right now bananas are between .99c and 2.99 kg depending where you shop and tomatoes are between 1.99 and 3.99 per kg. Also for travellers it is advised to try and find a fruit and vegetable only shop, these places are usually pretty cheap and can be better for local farmers too. Don't be afraid to not shop at a large supermarket...while these are good for basics like packaged goods and sometimes meat and fresh produce when in season...a dedicated fruit and vegetable shop usually always be cheaper.
Be careful of some places when described as a market, they can sometimes be places where they think their produce is grown in soil made of gold...steer clear of places like this.
There's something like 5,000 commonly used abbreviations here in Australia (they can vary from state to state) but yeah, it's a lot.

On the east coast, you have too watch for both brown snakes and Sydney funnel webs. Being in a city doesn't slow them down one bit, they seem too prefer it.

Funnel-web spiders are one thing you _do_ need to watch for. Living in Sydney or generally warmer areas of Australia. They are known to be in backyards and they do still take lives as they are aggressive, so this is worth noting, redbacks in the garden are a thing too and they are tiny but even as an Aussie I take note.
We haven't had a death from funnel web bites since the antivenom was discovered back in 1980, this is from the Australian Museum:
"There have been no deaths in Australia from a confirmed spider bite since 1979. An effective antivenom for Redback Spiders was introduced in 1956, and one for funnel-web spiders in 1980. These are the only two spiders that have caused deaths in Australia in the past"

I drive five hours and haven't left my state, and it's one of the small ones.
Gus Driving In Australia it depends in which direction I drive and where I start. In Germany you could easily reach up to 3 countries within 5 hours!

You mentioned Broome and Germany in you vid along with the size of Australia. To drive from Broome to Perth is about the same distance as driving from Berlin to Paris (passing through Belgium)... and back.

She does have a very good command of the english language. Its really pathetic on Australia and even my beloved USA that we aren't forced to take a foreign language throughout all of school. My kids, they had to do a term of something, and that was it; satisfied their school requirements in Victoria. In america, we had to do at least 1 year.. but still pales in comparison to somewhere like Germany. Really a sad situation for us. Wish we had to learn something from a young age and stick with it through 10 or so years of school. World would be a different place. Glad you loving australia tho.. best thing i did was move here 20 years ago

You should come to South Australia. Less flies here, very laid back, best underground music scene in the country, Adelaide is small and closer to the countryside but snakes are very rarely seen, slower paced but still busy and very clean!
The wineries here are nearly always looking for seasonal workers (not picking though) and there are lots of fruit growing farms that hire pickers on a regular basis! The pay is good and everything is easy to get to!!

The thing to watch out for closer to the cities is the magpie attacks, there's 2 types, the swoopers and the slammers, which is pretty self explanatory.

Here in Victoria along the river there are snakes in alot of places but this is what to watch out for in every season, in summer snakes especially in the murray river, spring magpie omg they are horrid, winter well there is not alot but AFL and Netball season run and it is really cold. Aurtum, watch for the snakes too.

We have seasons in Australia like in other countries there is a season for cherries grapes apples citrus fruits watermelon fruit is cheaper at these times of the year the rest of the year it is imported from different countries all over the world and is pricier so if you stick to fruit and veg in the growing season you'll be right
Not a lot of fruit and vegetables are imported. They are usually either grown in a greenhouse, grown in the northern parts of the country, or kept in storage and released later. There are a few exceptions, such as citrus from America, Avocados and kiwifruit from New Zealand, among others.
@travelwithlille if you really wanna know about Australia try to arrange a meet up with someone born & raised here & has spent a good deal of time travelling around.
You'll hear some good stories & maybe learn some things. Those are the sorta Aussies worth knowing cause we know about more about 1 area or culture.

Yawn on a summer day and you'll unintentionally receive enough protein intake to last you for a week. . . And somehow we all forget how ruthless the flies are every year...
We have Aldi supermarkets everywhere now. Well known for being cheaper than other supermarkets. And kangaroos do hop down our main roads occasionally. Assumptions can lead to erroneous conclusions. I liked your video.

I have 5 spider roommates I keep them because they eat all the bugs and a few more live in my backyard under plant pots and stuff
your english is very good. we shorten worsds and talk fast so that our mouths are not open for long . it reduces the chance of eating flies.
winter is better ,no flies or very few. you should see how you manage with a fly plague. it happens every few years depending on rainfall heat etc.
Its call do your research before hand would have been the smartest thing to do.
4:45 - just buy Aerogard ! a product safe to spray on the skin / face it means flies will not come near your face or skin
The fly situation is ok most of the time, however, if we have a particularly wet season, when the weather starts to warm up, the humidity helps breed the flies and then they become a real pain.

Most of the alcohol price is government tax to discourage drinking it, particularly spirits like vodka. Wine is more reasonably priced at the lower end.

Yes exercise on spirits is very high in Australia because it absolutely destroys people’s health when drunk to excess and this results in high medical costs for the taxpayer.
A bit of research into weather trends etc... you wouldn’t have had such trouble or surprise with half of these. There is a very short period of the year when bananas are a bit more $$$ but not that much. I’m in Melbourne not even near bananas growing. We had one year where it was more $$$ but that was from the cyclone destruction to the banana groves up north.
natural products (like bananas as you mentioned) would cost more because they are grown locally. The money goes straight from your pocket to the people selling, so they choose the price. Now me living in Canada, all foods that are imported are cheap, because often imported foods rely on cheap labour from second, third and fourth world countries. Cheap labour means cheap product essentially.
Very true. A few years ago there was a move to import some bananas when much of our crop had been destroyed by a cyclone and it was forbidden Because Australia is free of the most common banana diseases that most other banana growing countries around the world have from time to time. So we will never be importing bananas from cheap labour countries. We do import some oranges from USA in the off-season because oranges are so seasonal, but there is no risk of disease with them. Not much else is imported afaik. Just a few specialty things like asparagus etc.
Many Australian tourists in europe tell tall stories about snakes and spiders.

I am an Australian living in Vietnam (cheap country). Here I pay $3 for a litre of milk which costs $1 in Australia. I went back last year and bought a 250gm block of German chocolate for $2. Back in Vietnam, I don't buy chocolate because it costs $14 for the same one. All this and Aussies earn $24 per hr while Vietnamese earn $1 per hour. Life is tough in Australia.

pricing really depends on if the fruit and veges are in season AND if there is adequate competition around.
Yeah so true! That price was from when they were not in season. Grapes in season are quite cheap and than off season the prices go up like crazy

And when you say they get shipped to Germany. Bananas probably travel further to get to Melbourne. Australia is huge!
@@travelwithlille Off season grapes are imported, often all the way from the USA. Best to buy what's in season, saving $$ and greenhouse gas release in transport. Labelling rules require that country of origin be shown on the shelf label. Off season apples are kept in cold storage. Fresh is best!

I know that you are not allowed to fly over random people but I am pretty sure you are allowed to fly over the person that is part of the flight crew. Isn’t that true?
@@travelwithlille Absolutely not. A licensed pilot with an RePL is allowed to fly within 15m of someone if they give their consent(and are given a safety briefing), but In absolutely no circumstances are you allowed to fly within 30m of people (30m in a CYLINDER).

Don't feel bad if you were told one thing but now realise it turns out to be wrong. CASA has been literally cooking up the rules on the fly in the past years. Something you formerly thought OK might be illegal now.
It's a young persons country, as you have to adapted and assimilate to a modern environment.

The fly's are not to bad in the city's it's only when you go out to the country towns and out into the bush and they are at there worst mainly in summer.🙂

Not many flies in the big cities, not like in the countryside. I never have any problems with flies so don’t think the whole country is like that.

The amount of aussies offended have no idea that, despite hours of research, some things you just don't find out until you actually live in an area. Some things, like weather, are easily overlooked because of the common Australian portrayal as being hot 24/7. It wasn't until recently that I learned that the southern hemisphere has their summer months during the northern hemisphere's winters! It's easy to forget, especially if you don't watch the weather reports everyday in a different region/hemisphere from your own. So what would you know?
And there are MANY different things you'll hear online - government registry or not. I've heard before that it is unnecessary to worry about spiders as "most" people have never seen a particularly dangerous snake or ridiculously large spider. Meanwhile others will say that they're everywhere! You'll just never know unless you go there, and what you find just may still be surprising- because there are so many different opinions!
