Im confused. If the stiffener is toxic and you have to wear gloves and mask does it become not toxic once its on the hat? Dont want to wear something toxic on my head
Think they wear it while applying it because while it's wet it can be inhaled and dry in the lungs..the hands should be covered as if youre using any strong glue... to prevent your hands sticking to fabric while applying and easy clean up. My only question is how does this product handle under water (mild vs heavy).
If you apply too much stiffener in one go it can sometimes leave a white residue, applying the stiffener to the inside obviously won't be seen if this happens. Small brims, when wired, don't need stiffening. Larger brims, dependent on the style, can be stiffened in areas to give extra hold.
How long after stiffening the wool felt before you can start blocking
Do you do this before you form the felt hat or does it matter?
Do you need to damp the felt before applying the shellac?
The felt should be dry before applying the stiffener, it is better to use small amounts and build the stiffness gradually.
parkinfabrics thank you very much!!!!!!

Do you stiffen it before or after the blocking process
Before. Look at 3:18
Tanx 👍👍👍👍
It says never stiffen the outside - is there a reason for that? I need to stiffen the brim of a hat, so should I do the top or the underside?

How can I make my felt hat look darker? Please help
It is difficult to offer advice without seeing the hat itself, generally can only change the colour before the hat is made.
