I mean he did say the curse stone filled him with a murderous impulse - I 100% think he's not just down bad, but also being literally cursed can do that to a mf. I mean he IS down bad, I won't deny that. But the curse stone definitely influences his actions as well, as it's implied. Perhaps if he WASN'T cursed then he WOULD'VE ran away from this whole situation, he's just impulsed by the curse to not do so. Perhaps his down bad-ness is increased in order to give him the resolve to participate in whatever things the curses have going on.

I saw the VOD so just wanted to drop a comment. Looking up the files next time is a VERY good idea, and there are updates the game DEFINITELY expects you to read. There was one moment in this, after you got the curse stone where it highlights the "resentful memory" that comes to you, the game updates the Whispering Canal file with what that is actually referring to. I think it works best (and is probably intended) to be read at the time it updates with the appropriate music and the higher tension. There are a bit too many files in general though imo and I can see how you wouldn't want to break up the stream reading about wards in Tokyo. I'd say in general the character files and the 7 mystery files should be looked at whenever you can though.
Yes, at the bare minimum the game expects you to read the character biographies (the Persons of Interest section) and the curses (The Seven Mysteries section) in order to have enough information to theorize what's going on. I know it's a lot of text, but it will help you out greatly! The "Society and Culture" part is not as necessary, though, but are interesting to read because they give you a nice bit of history on some real life locations, which is something I enjoyed a lot in this game. You won't miss anything by skipping those, if you don't want to read every single file^^

Mostly came down to too much of a muchness, the serious to wacky ratio being out of wack, joke repetition of the first games greatest hits, and... I also fond I diverged politically from where the game ultimately went. This is all my opinion and supposition.

I loved AI the Nirvana initiative. The story was entertaining and the twist was brilliant. Seriously I don’t get how you guys don’t love it. And the final golden ending was wild and added another layer on everything
I watched their play-through and I would say it's a long list of little things that built up too high for them to take. They didn't enjoy the characters as much as the first game, thought the breaking of some continuity (no spoilers for those that haven't played) detracted from the narrative of both games, and they didn't seem to like the ending. They explain their issues better throughout the game and in their last episode though.
This isn't anything specific about Nirvana Initiative but there have been a number of games they disliked as a group that have good or generally favorable reviews with the exception of Outer Wilds: EotE when Gina didn't like it and Allison was relatively positive. I don't know if all of their tastes are identical or there may be an aspect of yes and... improv style commentary where when one person has a positive or negative reaction to something and it begins to snowball into affecting every aspect of the game for everyone. By the end of AI:NI there wasn't a single decision the game could make without being criticised. I know when they start a game Gina has played they are going to really enjoy it. But I don't want one person to be a sounding board instead of a contributor for every game. I'm often wary of a game that is new to the group because the reaction can be a crapshoot even if it's popular or beloved by its fans. TLDR: not every game is for everyone but the lack of disagreement feels odd at times.
Ooooooh getting around to watching this now and this game is a blast. It has a LOT of reading though when it comes to those files. Regardless, it's a good time, and I enjoyed how it handled its story.
I'll be honest nirvana initiative was kinda bland, but what made me have disdain for the game was the fact that the villains plan was to "some how" rearrange the way the player see's the crime to create a contradiction in the system that doesn't actually exist to break reality. I.E. their plan was to break reality to break reality. Leaving me to ask basic questions like how, why, and what? The 999 series followed a logic or a reason that functions in universe even if it is strange. It is legitimately clever when the main villain of the 3rd one performs the coin flip to cut all multiversal suffering from his project in half (he coulda made it a 1/100 chance of torture or something, but its a game and even the coin flip was mechanically annoying because you could win multiple times). But the frayer project doesn't make sense in theory let alone in practice.
Re: Nirvana Initiative as someone who played it but didn’t watch your playthrough: I liked it a little but was also pretty disappointed. But I genuinely did like Ryuki! It’s fun to have a character who’s head is so fucked up. He’s in love with Date (has bad taste) and has depression/paranoia/weird glitch out episodes. In my brain he and Tama are a cute couple romantically which is interesting because I don’t see any of the other duos that way at all. I know it’s partially me projecting on to him but he’s fun to me. Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t think it was an amazing game overall, but for me personally I like it better than ZTD I think. Though maybe I need to replay it to decide that actually Aini is worse. They both have the same problem where they have a major twist for the audience that isn’t a twist for the characters. I like the lore in ZTD more but I think replaying aini would be more fun.
The pacing in that game can be very wonky, it didn't affect me overall while I was playing, but since they streamed it in big intervals, I think this may have hurt their experience (it also gave them time to think a lot about the things they disliked and weren't working). But yeah I agree with pretty much everything you said!
I wanted to comment that I second liking Ryuki as a protagonist. I think it was fun playing as him and I loved his dynamic with Tama, but I also ultimately think that the reason why someone would say that he's "forgettable" is because the game does nothing with him (seriously, was it necessary to just completely drop him after the first third of the game?). It's the same with Mizuki too (she just has characterization from the first game carrying her). I said this in a comment in their NI playthrough, but that game squanders the potential of both of its protagonists because we don't get enough time with either of them. It's just unfortunate.
