2ne1 are a legendary female music/dance group. They are pioneers in female kpop! They introduced a brand new genre called (girl crush) into kpop. And also they are the 4th top selling female group of all time in all of music with over 66 million albums sold. No other female kpop group has come close to that yet. And I say "yet". Some groups "might". People hype up the kpop group blackpink. But not even blackpink is close to that amount in album sales. So yeah 2ne1are kind of a big deal! And thats why their comeback is a big deal. I'm surprised you haven't heard of them before now?
To appreciate this more, you must understand the context of when this was released. Back then, most kpop girl groups were all cute/pretty cookie cutter girl groups who are doing feminine, sexy, or cutesy concepts. Then comes these girls who are considered "ugly" and unconventional, with this loud banger of an in-your-face music and avant garde fashion.
It's hard to do a short version, but 2ne1 (nobody seems to know the definitive way to say it) blew the Korean Kuitsey Girl concept to hell and paved the way for Blackpink. They were also one of the first groups to get screwed big time by YG, their agency. Even though they were knocking out bangers, YG didn't think they were attractive enough (really, he said it) and rushed Blackpink out. Kpop fans have kept slamming YG for years about this and I guess he decided it was finally time to make amends to the group and the fans. Now the group you should really be looking at (I don't know if you have or not) is (G)I-dle. This group is, hands down, the most consistently creative, and they're almost completely self-contained. Shortly after they debuted, there was a bullshit bullying charge that forced one of its members out so the company just basically put them in the fridge while they tried to figure whether to keep them or disband them. And this is when the tiny terror of Kpop, Jeon Soyeon, came into her own. Soyeon battlerapped her way into Kpop as a member of (G)I-dle ("Idle" from now on), and asked the agency if she could write a song for the group. Cube said what the hell and said why not? Soyeon took on the role of songwriter/singer/main rapper/producer/manager and creative concept director. The song, "Tomboy," shot to the top of the charts and Idle never looked back. They write and produce all their own material and have six "All Kills," where their song has hit the top of all the music charts in Korea. It's rare to get one and these guys have six. Soyeon is also one of the most prolific songwriters in the business. She's not only the main songwriter for Idle, but has written for a lot of other groups as well. Look around RUclips and all you find are reactors in awe of her. (She's actually the Guiness record holder as "Fastest Rapper" with a record 8.3 syllables a second on a song. Check out K/DA's "Pop/Stars" and "More" for a demo of her blistering rap skills.) So you should check out (G)I-dle and K/DA. Trust me, you won't be sorry...
2ne1 really changed the game. Before them all girl groups were girly pop, cutesy to the point it was too sickly sweet. All girl groups pandered to middle schoolers and high school bu5 some songs became mainstream. Jyp had Wonder girls a group who specialized in bubble pop retro songs. SNSD was the preppy fun girls with techno pop music. 2ne1 was Hip Hop and electric music like Big Bang. But they were so experimental it was insane. Overnight they became a syndrome. They were the group who ended SNSDs reign over the charts. They didn’t even release a lot of music yet all their songs dominated the charts for a very very long time compared to any other girl group of their generation.
They made me switch to kpop from jpop. Jpop was sooooo good back in the day. Only korean artist i liked before them was boa who was the first korean to make it in japan 👍
