Singkil is the Filipino version of the Ramayana, the story of God Ram (Hindu, Indian god). The reason for it being from India is because prior to the Spanish colonialistion, philippines was heavily Indianised and used to have Hinduism mixed with fold religion as its religion
IMHO, it was very good, not too far off from the orig theme. The costumes were Outstanding! although, the Princess' costume was very elaborate and beautiful, she should 've stayed in the gold outfit, she got lost in the sea of color. Her demeanor was in standing of being dignified and not over the top. It's nice to see young people involved in cultural events. It takes hardwork and dedication. Keep it going! You guys are great
Singkil... Is story of the princess and the prince... Love.. Hardship.. Struggle... Joy... Discipline..... Kaya nga lahat ng sayaw ay meron meaning kahit sa bamboo at kung bakit walang sapatos ang mga dancer... Meron yan meaning at details..... SINGKIL IS A DRAMATIC DANCE
This is actually very good. The costumes are elaborate, classy and colorful. But just an observation: the costume change of the princess is unheard of (actually my first time to see one); the ladies-in-waiting were using the folding abanico fans; the suitor should have tucked his sword behind the shield when dancing opposite the princess as a sign of respect.
Costumes are totally renovated... This is not the proper costumes... I've been a cultural ambassador here in Mindanao dancing this dance.. But the costumes are incorrect.... The performance were good overall...
@@rheyssiediovhindiaz5738 - I've seen performances in the CCP with similar costumes... so how could this be incorrect?... maybe you're just talking about a different time period. The early period had more Hindu influence hence why they have elaborate headdresses, and the dance itself is the Maranao interpretation of the Ramayana... while in the later period the Maranao changed and became more culturally Muslim so they started to replace the headdresses with head scarves instead. I've also seen other Singkil performances on RUclips and they have similar costumes as this.
Isn't there an "official video" of the event released by the organization that staged it? This footage is so annoying with it's intermittent zoom in zoom out, distorting the overall perception of the performance. The sound however isn't bad, and it captures the stage music and foot stomps. Pero sayang for the most part much of the dance sequences are absent in the footage. Sayang.
I don't believe that the ancient version of the dance+music is actually devoid of any oral sounds, singing or shouts. From the movements therein it is presumed that it leads to a sequence that builds to a climax which would naturally elicit a lot of vocally emitted sounds and shouts particularly where the noble warrior shows off his blade wielding skills. This particular performance is a bit stiff in that there are no such sounds or cheers from the dancers and musicians, which is so unnatural to this type of dance.
The Singkíl originated from the Maranao people who inhabit the shores of Lake Lanao. It is derived from a story in the Darangen, the Maranao interpretation of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana [indicating the dance’s Hindu spiritual origin]. The name of the dance itself means “to entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in your path”. It is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other festive entertainment. Originally only women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkíl, which serves as either a conscious or unconscious advertisement to potential suitors.
