It's so wonderful to listen to one of the original dancers. How amazing! It was one of the highlights of the live screening when we had this film during the interval. I hope that everything he knows about this ballet (& all the early ballets he is familiar with) is recorded for posterity. And that he is given a free seat and honourable treatment at the ROH. 🙏
It is certainly addictive. I have it on DVD and need to watch it periodically. There is something so very uplifting and satisfying about this ballet. Perhaps it is the time it comes from. The point about it being a perfect fusion of music and dance is very well made. I also like the fact that the dancers of today find it incredibly difficult to execute. In short, it is my favourite ballet and as close to perfection as any choreographer is ever likely to get.
A superlative ballet which looks as fresh as ever. It is lovely to see dancers like Vadim clearly relishing the challenge that a piece like this continues to present some 70 years after its debut. I really don’t think that non-narrative ballet gets any better than this.
I had the honour of seeing this ballet with Fonteyn twice. Once from the gallery. Fonteyn stood still for what seemed a good five minutes and one just watched her standing still. The second I watched from the wings at Covent Garden. Half way through Fonteyn decided to give up and while dancing with her partner she just said "I cannot go on!" I forget who the name of her partner, It was Brian Drake? He just said "Oh yes you can darling!" I know the exact moment this happened. The ballet was removed from the repertoire for years so it is good to have it back. I was a 13 year old child in 1957 and really the first time I saw a steak was in the restaurant at Covent Garden. The ordinary population in UK at this time just had meat!
I never got ballet, but since I've discovered your videos, I can't get enough! Thank you for another really great one. I hope to visit the ROH one day.
To me, it is THE ballet. I adore it. No other ballet, except Ashton’s Monotones, is like it. I’ve waited for 40 years and at last in 2017, it was put on DVD by the ROH. Then it was on two different DVDs, and I’ve got both.

I can't watch Symphonic without wanting to see it all over again a few more times. It's like a refreshing drink of choreographic water on a hot day.

I adore this ballet - so pure and beautiful and joyful. And with this cast too.
LOVELY TO SEE HENRY DANTON BLESS HIM !!

To know this history behind it is so lovely

Thanks Susanna - we look forward to seeing you here!
I saw that in 1948. With Fonteyn. Shearer. May. Sommes. Danton and shaw. A very great ballet
"We danced by spirit, not by well fed muscles"...
So true!
Always loved the woman's costumes from this ballet..
Henry Danton - what a wonderful man!!
