BURNES FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!! THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND!!!!! SMOKE SHOW BAYBAY!! The starting pitcher for the All Star Game this year was a Baltimore Oriole. Do you know how long I’ve waited to say that, and how badly I’ve wanted to say it? After all the draft picks, the Bundy’s Arrietta’s and Matusz’ of the world. And what’s really special about Burnes is the thing people don’t know about him after watching last night’s game. That’s what Corbin is like when he doesn’t have his stuff. He didn’t throw a single curveball and we all know that thang is filthy, I think he threw one slider and he had no feel for his change up, couldn’t throw it for a strike at all which we have seen from time to time in the early innings from him and he was struggling with location across the board on the cutter and four seamer. When he tried to go inside to lefty’s he was missing in off the plate and out over the plate when he was going away on the cutter which led to Harper’s double(which was a straight up defensive swing where the dude with the biggest back swing in history finished his swing pointing the bat head to center field). And that’s Corbin Burnes folks, even when he is actively avoiding his two, high quality breaking balls, struggling to locate his high velocity pitches and has no feel whatsoever for his off speed pitch, meaning hitters can sit on his cutter/four seamer, and he winds up in a jam with multiple runners in scoring position while facing the best hitters in the National League, he still puts up zeros. How many pitchers can say they could only throw their fastballs for a strike, and had to go through the likes of Ohtani, Harper, Turner and Contreras, but still throw up a goose egg despite allowing a walk and a double? That’s what makes Burnes really special and worth every bit of every penny the Orioles better give him this winter, preferably sooner. Personally I don’t think we’ve seen him with his best stuff yet this year because I’ve seen a couple innings here and there where he’s been able to go in, out, up and down with the cutter, bury the curveball and throw it for a strike, and make really good hitters look really bad to a point where two pitches into the AB you’re feeling bad for the hitter and only wondering as to whether or not it’s going to be a K or if he’s going to find a way to make some kind of contact miraculously so you get to see a broken bat travel further than the ball. Lots of fun. I think it’s just the new environment thing, but he’s going to catch his groove eventually, and I think it’s coming real soon. Kinda hoping it all locks in for him on October 1st, even if it would mean the O’s will have to pay him more. He’s worth it. He may not be as “electric” as Paul Skenes, but nobody is more consistent in all of baseball. I think he’s had one outing all year where he allowed 4+ runs, and even that was only because of a wall scraper yanked right down the line for a 3 run homer, but I’m almost positive he’s never gone less than 5 innings in a game. I can’t remember him going less than 6 to be honest. He’s incredibly consistent and reliable, to a point where I never for a second last night even considered that he might give up a run. It would have taken at least one, if not multiple errors, without question. I love to Ramble about Burnesy! Can’t wait till the season is over and he wins the Cy Young. Absolutely no one in the AL can hang with him for a full 162 and 30+ starts. No one.
