I had a prof that always talked about The Perfect Racecar. The Perfect Racecar is the one that completes the race then immediately disintegrates. Anything more durable than that was overbuilt and too heavy.

+1 for that. I managed to get my hands on a VHS tape years ago about Britten's design/building/racing at Daytona. The fact that he brazed a crack in the cylinder wall the night before the race, and the only reason the bike lost was due to a Ducati regulator was amazing. Him jumping up and down like a kid at Christmas seeing the bike run so well is still one of the most poignant, beautiful things I've seen.
Absolute legend, absolute genius. I didn't even know the man personally, and still felt the loss of his passing.

Thank you, as always, for a delightful video.
    A) Wow, Shute is SMOOTH.
    B) Yes, racing are hard. I think most new racers underestimate the effort it takes just to arrive at the track, on time, with functional equipment... doubly so if you're not a trustafarian. For example, I roadraced motorcycles for 6 years. The first race of my second season, I left my helmet at home.
    C) I crewed for a sidecar team in 2011 (the last year of dirt sections, the year Monster Tajima broke 10 minutes.) It was one of the best experiences of my life. Everything about it just seems designed to amp up your emotions. The epic skill & bravery of the racers, the loyalty and grit in the face of adversity of the crews, the mind-boggling danger, the crazy hours, the bizarre sleeping arrangements, the basic difficulties of managing 10k people on a 2 lane road...
I need to go again, and I'd love to support a team again.
    All hail the algorithm.

The idea of a French woman driving a German car to victory at Pikes Peak didn’t sit well with some. Bobby Unser was reputedly quite vocal about his loss, to which Mouton is said to have replied: “If you have the balls you can try to race me back down as well.”

I have to mention the backstory of Per Eklunds pikes peak build. They filmed the entire build, it's on RUclips but in Swedish and without subtitles sadly. So Per and his mechanics, friends and at the end anybody who proved somewhat usefull built the car themselves in some garage in the middle of nowhere.
The carbon fiber molds from Saab were off and other as to be expected hurdles for trying to put a racecar together. They just worked, worked and worked, basically lived of the local pizzeria. The pizzeria even refused to take their order once since it was for so many pizzas they were sure it was a prank call. Such a pleasure to see the amount of self thought and skilled mechanics putting the car together. And all they had were pretty much basic tools. The only fancy stuff was parts for the car.
They were stupidity close to not make it and shipped the car over untested. This car then set a record in the open class that stood for 12 years.
That's the beauty of pikes peak. This is btw my all time favorite motorsport story.

Not a big racing fan, but I look forward to Pike's Peak all year! So extreme, so unpredictable! Thanks for the insight into Shute's campaign!

Amazing video. Almost perfect: a bit of sarcasm, a lot of legitimate engineering truth, and tons of passion. Overall: congrats. By far, the best (nowadays) coverage of PP. of course I subscribed!

Used to live in a little town close by, Westcliffe, and would go see the many races they held at Pikes Peak. This was back in the late 90's when it wasn't completely paved and was more of a rally race than a time attack race. They raced everything from semi trucks, motorcycles, pretty much anything with a motor and wheels. A tidbit of trivia: The reason why you can drive a car all the way to the summit of the tallest mountain in the southern range of the Rockies is that Pikes Peak is a part of a much older mountain range that had eroded to the point where you could drive up it, essentially becoming a gigantic hill. The Rocky Mountain range with all of its sharp peaks came much later. If you're ever in the area also check out a place called Bishop's Castle. Worth the short trip from Colorado Springs.

I drove up Pikes Peak the day before you submitted this video. Well 3/4th the way up. The remaining drive to the top was done in a Grade School Bus... Yeah, School Bus bouncing its way up to 14,000 feet.

I was at Devil's Playground when Sebastien Loeb went by in the Peugot. His run was fantastic, and it started snowing 20 minutes later. The weather is as much a competitor as the mountain, never mind the other drivers.

great run, but it would have been interesting if he made an wrc like effort ..it could also have been the car not functioning as he wanted. he seemed to be somewhat unhappy with the car when talking to the team member right after the fact

Awesome story. Have any cars run a Brabham BT46 style fan car to literally suck the car to the tarmac? Use electric motors to run the fans and full ground effects?

My take in aero at pike's peak is that with such elevation the airspeed in no corner comes close to what it is at sea level, and therefore the entire run is low and mid speed corners. With half the atmospheric pressure you have half the drag and downforce, so the wings these dudes have are just half as ridiculous as they look. My personal best was a 8:50 iirc in beamng
