  • The LPG demand in the UK is shrinking, there are less outlets to fill up from and major fuel stations are removing their LPG pumps. What's going on and how can you avoid getting caught out?
This is the 2nd version of this story due to being forced to remove the previous video after legal efforts were made to block it. Find out the full details yourself by reading the information linked below, this is not really new news, but a lot of people still don't know what's going on so I wanted to share the info to make people aware.

Cheers for keeping us in the loop and putting your head on the chopping block again. But I've just had a GasLow refillable system installed for travelling in Europe and the dealer did not mention anything about this to me. Hey John don't bother about all the idiots out there. As far as i can see you brought to our attention that LPG for our Gaslow tanks etc will become less and less available if something isn't done about it. I think they way you put out the first video was fair considering that all you did was gather the already available info that was out there quicker than i would have found out myself. Thanks as always for all your reliably checkable information pal.

There are a group of people who research subjects through debate or data sets provided and try to draw attention if something is not right or looks to be going in a negative direction to the end user, welcome to that club, you will have your “I told you so” moment, I have have a few lately, however what I have found in the past few years people seem unable to move a position formed when, new, better information becomes available.

I would say carry on, as in this case your views are most welcome and backed up it seems, some will not follow, they can’t. For the rest of us ongoing debate within this community should be nothing but a benefit.

@@GadgetJohn This a personal observation and not at all based on LPG. On any topic a middle ground position in which to form an opinion seems to work best for me, so if a narrative is a given, then it seems from a basis of balance you have to venture to the other side of the argument and work your way back until that balance is found., Nowt wrong with that, works for me and I am older than you, so its proven for me.

What I have found in the past few years, the middle ground position is not welcome, you MUST be for one side of the other. I don’t recall in my 62 years on the planet such behaviour as the norm.

On the LPG issue you are ahead of the curve, imparting information with sources, but its not on the radar for people, not yet a narrative and for some reason its a problem….LPG, good god, heaven help us with climate, war and health matters.

I say what I think and learned when to not bother with detractors, from your video’s I have learn’t what to do and perhaps not what to do, thats a honest position to have John

Hi John, Many thanks for raising the awareness of this issue. Those with a vested interest in the survival of forecourt LPG (which includes those who produce refillable tanks and the manufacturers/builders that incorporate them into their vans) should focus their efforts on campaigning to improve its availability rather than attempting to silence those who are informing us about its sad demise. As an Autosleeper owner with an underslung LPG tank I have been concerned for a while about the difficulty in obtaining LPG and what I am going to do in the future. It concerns me that so many new vans from large companies are being sold with underslung tanks as a "feature" to naive consumers who are not aware of this. About time something was done !

Hi John. Personally I want to thank you for making us aware of what's happening. I actually gave up on LPG a year or so back due to supply issues. I have one independent supplier about a mile away who's about to close down, the next one is about 20 miles away. I've now gone lithium and solar with an induction hob for cooking, Costly to set up - yes but I'm now completely self sufficient. Maybe the answer is not to rely on forecourts but to encourage some of the larger dealers and camp sites to provide LPG fill points, after all they will have a captive market. There will be more than a few LPG storage tanks and pumps available as the forecourts abandon them. It might even convince me to dig out the refillable bottles again. Guess we just have to wait and see !

If you keep your LPG needs to cooking ( which it is really good at), and do everything else with either diesel or electric, then you should find that your gas fill is taken over a much longer span. Over the next few years, when you haven't got as much choice where you fill up, it won't be that inconvenient if you have to fill every couple of months and go out of your way a bit. On the other hand, if the fridge and heating are all gas, then you will be refilling every week and it will become a pain.

Right now 50% of yearly lpg volume comes from Russia (1.2 mln tonnes out of 2.5 mln) but with UE LPG ban on the horizon -Lpg prices could go up drastically( right now 1L of lpg is 60 % less than 1 L of gas/petrol)

A naturally aspirated engine with LPG instalation is one of the best compromise between , longevity, cheap to run and keeping the most of engines power, even for towing power. Hybrids might be cheap to run but for people that needs towing/carry things, a verry big engine is required. EV`s and PHEV`s also have that problem, plus the range is crap depending on the carry load and wheather outside and the time you need for charging and the battery swap after 10 -15 years and ...etc.
For me a simple aspirated engine with LPG is the best outthere still!

Hi John, whilst the information you provided wasn’t music to my ears after splashing out on a refillable safefill bottle a few months back it was something I was totally unaware of. Unfortunately social media can be a cruel environment. For those unhappy with the news ,you have now provided an outlet for their frustrations. If we want to keep lpgs available it is down to the people to raise it to government not to harass you. Keep providing the great content and ensure you enjoy doing it. Thank you John.

I don’t comment much or I’m careful what I say as after a tough few years for me I now find it very difficult to deal with any form of conflict and I just steer away from it. So I can only imagine what you’ve been through but I hope this positive comment goes a small way to making up for the crap. Thank you again for all your hints tips and advice from a person hoping to start a build this year.

Am I being stupid? Isn’t this an opportunity for the C&C club and the C&M club to show support for their members and install LPG filling stations in their sites. They have the space and presumably there is some profit in it. Plus the people who need it are the actual people who are staying at their sites. Perhaps they could pilot it with 5 sites each. If it is a commercial success and demonstrates benefits, they could roll it out to other sites in 2024.

Keep doing what you do John. It is invaluable for people like myself. Im slowly converting a minibus into a camper and invested in a refillable lpg system but have not yet installed. Your video made me do my own investigation into the availability of lpg. Strangely the suppliers of refillable systems don't mention the decline of filling stations only point to sites who list stations who have lpg pumps. And quiet a few of those listed say lpg is currently unavailable. One of the big refillable system suppliers make a big deal they have installed a pump at one of their sites. Great if you live near Lougborough!! I can't afford to invest in lithium batteries yet so the alternative options you provided in your video have made me rethink my setup. Once again thankyou for your informative videos and please keep making them. 👏👏👏

Unfortunately John, as this channel has a good number of subscribers, you are always going to get people who disagree with your views. But some will do it politely and in a discussion, where others will just be rude. You also have those who are just out to pick an argument and it may not even matter what they actually think....they still may well just want to be argumentative. You only have to look on the current Facebook groups to see that people will get quite stuck in on even the most trivial matters. As a prominent RUclipsr you are probably almost a target for some.
Perhaps it's a sign of the times? Is it worse on this channel as opposed to your combined travel channel? I get the impression it may be worse when you are having an opinion on a subject, so god help me if my channel grows🤣🤣🤣.
But as someone else pointed out, it's really only a fraction of 1% that are rude and in reality there are hundreds more positive comments.
Personally I am not overly concerned that gas will become impossible to get hold of, but it is definitely going to be harder to access and require more planning of journeys to accommodate it and if necessary, planning a build to deal with it.
It was certainly interesting to see the research you put in and the country's attitude to provision of LPG.
    Chin up..Ed

Absolutely criminal that the LPG network is dying! This is completely down to successive governments not only refusing to support it's use, TFL, for a very short time, exempted LPG vehicles from the congestion charge, that didn't last long! it is, after all, much cleaner than Petrol or Diesel. There is/was an independent LPG network based around the Cheltenham area stretching as far as Oxford, I believe, it cost just £5 for the access key (a physical one!).

Hi John, sorry you’ve had these issues. Vested interests!!! Thanks for the info about the petition, I’ve signed up and I hope all of us who rely on LPG will also do so. There are no LPG stations left in Edinburgh or my nearest City Dundee. There are a couple of places on industrial units but as you said they have limited opening hours. I purchased a new campervan last yr which has an underslung tank not realising that it was a problem. Please don’t get disheartened, most of us appreciate the information and will pass it on to others who might be interested. Incidentally I my previous house all heating and cooking was done with LPG we had a large tank in the garden.

Thanks for this video John. It is worrying the way things are going. We have refillable bottles and often use Morrisons for LPG. If they are removed they will lose our diesel fill up and food purchases in the store. Between that and the rising costs of campsites I don't know how much longer we'll keep the motorhome, which is a shame.

Hi John, l live in Australia the No1 supplier of LPG l believe in the world. The scandle here is the Australian Goverment several years ago allowed the big oil companies to build an infistructure to mine and export LPG and they get the gas FREE. Yep! you heard correct FREE. On top of that the corporations do not pay tax. I have just bought an LPG ford falcon car which allows me to pay $1 per ltr instead of $2 per litre so cheap motoring. There is a lot more to this story but being eco friendly l wanted to do my bit for the planet and not buy a diesel, petrol or even electric car which all polute more. My friends have electric teslas but these run off coal burning power stations here in Australia.

Yet another really excellent factual video John. I, like so many others, have relied on your honesty and integrity for a number of years and I don't think that you have ever let us down. A product may work really well for a period of time but you are not afraid of informing us when some unexpected fault suddenly appears. When full-timing we cannot, or in my view should not, rely on just one source of energy and a mix of electricity and gas provides us with the alternative that we need when one of them fails, especially in winter. The information that you provided on LPG was based on fact and it has helped us to consider the options for the future. Personally I believe that even if the garages stop selling LPG then an alternative source of supply will emerge to meet the demand, perhaps not as widespread but accessible. Today I paid £0.79/litre for LPG but I would be quite happy to pay £1.00/litre because it is a fantastic source of energy for cooking and in an emergency for heating. You have over 30,000 subscribers that support you.

I can tell by my town's example (Swindon), back in 2014-2017 when I drove a LPG converted car there were 3 autogas filling stations in town (one at one of the fuel stations open to all public and two keysites - calor and countrywide). Currently the closest autogas filling stations are some 20 miles away which according to the website you show have been mostly 'temporarily out of order'. Only recently, because of the fuel prices I was considering converting my car to LPG but it simply doesn't seem to make any financial sense. I could maybe even live with doing a 40 mile round trip to fill the car up once in a few weeks but if it happened that the filling station would be closed or out of order then it becomes a 40 mile hit and miss and it starts to be easier overall to drive on petrol saving wasted fuel and time. It's a real shame thins went downhill so fast. I keep wondering what makes Britain so reluctant to driving LPG converted cars. Most of Europe seems to have plenty of autogas stations.
