Great effort, nice to see you not slating the company, love the attention to detail on this! Thinking of doing the power steering on my escort. May even build one myself
No I hate to publicly slate any company. That’s their livelihood you could affect. You probably could easily put together a decent kit yourself without too much hassle
Hi Craig, an advantage of keeping the “small” potentiometer knob in the dash is that it won’t easily be rubbed or nudged off the setting that you have decided on. As I have always suspected, this car is promising to be one of the very finest examples in the UK. I’m looking forward to hopefully coming to see it at one of next year’s shows that you are planning to attend 👍🇬🇧
You definitely are a genius, Craig. The mounting of the power steering showed that you are able to make anything fit and also make the item look as though it was original. I’m looking forward to the next video. Cheers.
Another ace video Craig, well done. Totally agree about buying unfinished items and it's not just car parts, exactly the same with other hobbies. Even your original column mount bolts look quite sturdy, mine has self tappers securing column to dash and they look original too.
Thanks steve 👍 it’s bloody horrendous when you think of the price you pay for things. There is a captive nut plate which is originally tapped to about 1/4 unf or similar and I just fitted new bolts and big washers. It is pretty sturdy now actually. I also managed to get keys cut for that barrel too steve 👍 too good to not use
@@performanceclassics1986 yeah I saw the video where you had the keys made and made a note of the company as I have a petrol cap without a key as well! Going to be gutted when your car is finished and no more build videos to look forward to! 🙂

If you are worried about damaging the pin on the steering you could just mill the groove at 90 degrees to the pin it'll lock the wheel in a different place obviously but won't compromise safely and you've still got the locking column.
Great job Mate, you could make a cover out of the same carpet as the floor to cover the ugly stearing box , it's what some brands do OEM, just to finish it off
HI Craige. Thank you for your videos. I am about to embark on a MK1 project. So need all the help in can get through your videos. -). U understand there are 2 types of electric motors, which one should I get? It sure if one is bigger then the other or of its just one model. The link would be appreciated. I will be using the xflow engine either 1.3 or 1.6. What suspension would you recommend please? Coil overs or original? Would love to find rear disc conversions for rear drum to disc but worried 13 inch won't fit. Any ideas? Tks once again. Keep up the great work
Hello and thanks for the comment. Apparently there are two electric power steering kits. The standard and the heavy duty. I was told you really need the heavy duty if your running wheels wider than 7 inch, which I am. If using 7 inch or less, you can use the standard and cheaper kit. Have a look on easy steer website or give them a call. With regards to suspension, if your looking for a stiff ride with improved handling characteristics and the ability to lower/ heighten the car as you please then coil overs are great. If you just want a nice comfortable ride and aren’t really bothered about altering the ride height, then I’d stick with the original set up. I’m not sure if rear disk conversion will fit 13 inch wheels but the GS escort lads told me that they don’t really offer any real gain over drums, as the front brakes do the majority of the braking. Hope this helps in some way
Hi Craig, just getting uptown date on all your videos fantastic work, im now getting the enthusiasm to get my own mk1 done...........bit behind you though!! just putting new floor in.. just out of interest where did the power steering kit come from as like you I wish to retain the steering lock and original switch gear, many kits say you need to use mk2 column switches... keep up the great work and videos....
Thanks very much. Pleased the videos are helping motivate you to do your own. That’s my main reason for doing them. Are you on Facebook?? I can private message you where I got power steering from rather than mention on here after I complained about the kit 🤣 Cheers Chris

Hi craig your car is looking amazing mate cant wait to hear that engine running, I'm also needing power steering can i ask where you purchased it from and the cost of the steering unit thanks craig..
It was around about £650 but if your wheels 7 inch wide or less, there is a lighter duty kit for around £550. Rather than bad mouth the company, I’d rather not mention their name publicly but if you are on Facebook, I can private message you the company?? Even after the problems I had, I’d probably still recommend the kit .
I totally agree with you about the seal are they expecting people who purchase the steering column kit to get their feet wet they should have put a bit more thorough into the design

I looked at the EPAS kits about for my Mk2 RS2000 and found most lacking. Mines a road car and wanted to retain the same features you do like steering lock, factory switch gear and steering shroud. Most UK kits used the Corsa unit which I found oversized for my purpose so I adapted one from the Suzuki Ignis which is smaller. I also incorporated a wheel speed input into the EPAS ECU to enable speed related assistance. Engineering also did not allow welding of the shafts hence mine is all machined and joined top and bottom with D joints or splined. With the exception of the motor mounted to the column it looks similar to the original and once all installed and the shrouds fitted its near impossible to notice the EPAS unit installed. Keep up the good work 👍
Sounds good that paul. I bet the kit you’ve built is far superior to any available kits out there. Great work. Love the speed sensor idea because apparently you do have to adjust it often as steering can be too light under normal driving conditions. You should put your kit on the market. Sounds really good.
Ive currently painted the motor assembly black and once the steering cowel is on, it’s all hidden far more. Il let you see what you think in the next episode 👍

Its originally from a Vauxhall Corsa B that the company then adapts to suit your application.
