New player here. Just wanted to say thank you for these guides, they've been a life saver while learning the game. I picked BLU as my first job to lvl and gear and boy has it been a journey. I started about a month and a half ago and just got my 100JP gift, AND luckily learned Mighty Guard from the RoV mission!
I just so happen to find your channel on a whim, after returning of a 6 years hiatus.. I main BLU. When I found your videos, and was a little sad that I didn't see a BLU guide. And NOW you have one. It's like you knew I was watching! And thank you for your videos. Be it lengthy, you still explain the jobs in the simplest ways, that even I can understand. Now, I got new goals for my BLU thanks to you. Keep up the good work!
This is a fantastic guide so far on the blu and covering not only the simple aspect of the job but the advanced tricks like the mulit step skillchain (Main blu and is very proud to see this). Can't wait to see part 2 of this =)
Just coming back to FFXI for nostalgia purposes and decided to level one of my mules to get back into the game. Picked BLU, because while I've leveled it before I like to actually "play" a job on each of my characters and this guide was just the help I needed. Not sure how relevant it still is, but looking forward to Part 2. Thank you. :)
This was only a first part of two so I'll see if I can include any spells I missed, beyond the Elemental ones, in a "I messed up" section in the second video. Let me know what spell you think needs to be there. I will also be going into Weapon Skills and building skillchains in that video as well, I literally ran out of time for this one. I’ve just noticed an edit wasn’t saved at 10:28, I messed up a passage and re-recorded it, without the mistake being removed. Guess a mistake was a given in a video of this size.
I remember you mercing my first Herc set for me when I just arrived on Asura. Can't wait for that cleave section of your guide. I've been reluctant to join any cleave party on blu because I don't think my DMG output is quite there yet.
Great guide, and thank you for upping the audio levels! I was trying to listen to some of your other job guides while traveling on the interstate and it can be difficult to follow with the hum of the road. Not a criticism, but still a great appreciation. Keep up the great work!
As I continue my Journey: MNK to RUN > WAR > DNC > SCH to BLU… I am finding myself just enjoying the various types of play. DNC, SCH and BLU(So Far) are my favorite. MNK will always be me IRL (PT and Boxer) but damn do I enjoy the very… versatile styles of the ones I listed above
I've watched your videos for a while but this one finally made me subscribe. I've been looking forward to this guide since I started taking BLU seriously a few months ago. - Prowler, Bismarck.
Tourbillion is nice, but I'd say Beastmaster's Corrosive Ooze is much better. Its not locked behind Unbridled learning, and Corrosive Ooze is the same -33% defense down. it is ALSO a very powerful Magical AoE and -33% Attack Down. I'd put corrosive ooze as the best defensive down aside from idris geo-frailty.
@@joshuaouzts3551 Sweeping Gouge is Conal AoE, and Crude Raphie ha a 25% def down move w/ tortoise stomp. which is single target, but its also not an ilvl 119 pet. Also sweeping gouge is -16% from a blu, but -25% from Vivacious Vickie. Ahh, ofcourse you mean sweeping gouge from blu is single target. always interesting when their is inconsistent overlap between jobs.
My LS mates like to tease me for my OP White Wind set, but you know the truth! lol, ty for the guide. Looking forward to Part II. Any chance we'll get to see you play with /SCH (It's honestly quite fun, but probably still a little behind other /mage subs. IIRC, when I tested the weather spells bonus with Klimaform it only came out to ~500 more damage on spells. It was fun to MB /SCH in Vagary for 70k. Probably easy 99k with maxed MBD bonus. Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of BLU!).
Physical blue magic interacts with Souleater, making BLU a useful sub for DRK. Cocoon combined with Absorb-VIT can turn DRK into a great emergency tank as well, on top of crowd control like Sheep Song.
Originally the phrase was "Jack of all trades, Master of one." The flippant version became so popular that most folks have never heard of the original. Ideally though, in life you should learn all kinds of things but find one to dedicate yourself to and master. :D
That "limited job" crap pissed me off so much.... like the job will suffer anyway because there's no real support or status effects to that game. It's all numbers. Bigger dmg. Bigger shields. Bigger heals. When they tried real support with AST and DRK, the rage was insane. So why nerf a class that would already be nerfed by default.
@@Theinen84 I believe Yoshi P wants to keep his game as casual friendly as possible. Most of those casual gamers don't understand the importance of personal responsibility in MMOS. If a party need a player to have a certain list of spells for a fight, and they don't, they won't receive an invite. In FFXIV, when 1.X relics was added to the game, some of those players were denied an party invite because they didn't have the next step of the upgraded relics or didn't even have the weapon. Personal responsibility? Absolutely. Those people went to the forums and complained. They simple did not understand this concept. So, Yoshi and his team bent backward to those players because he understands that the main player population are casual(subscriptions) and they need to keep their shareholders happy all the time. This is business, and I get that. It could be deeper than this, but following the forms when ARR was released, I saw this. And this is when I stop taking the game seriously. I still play the game, but relics today are just used for glamour and no one uses them in BiS since most of those BiS weapons are farmed in endgame raiding. This may be the way of the MMO in this generation of gaming.
@@Theinen84to put it in the words of Yoshi-P 1. The job was built to be side content and turning it into a standard job would change the vision that they had 2. As you said a lot of the spells are useless outside of the side content they built around it. 3. Modifying spells to be useful in standard content or making specific spell for standard would ruin the identity blue mage has of bringing wacky abilities in to content for fun.
@@fluffdafire157 so don't add it. People wanted blue mage. A REAL blue mage to go through content with. The blue mage class has always been wildly popular. It really skyrocketed in popularity after XI. It would be better to NOT put it in and tease "maybe" than to put in a disappointing mini game and call it a "limited job", because now they gotta dedicate resources to a disappointment and either make it a full job, or admit it was a flop, yet still have to keep it up for the relatively few people that enjoy it. It was a bad move.
Rua, which job guide will you post next (these are very well put together) so pls dont stop. Looking for a BLM, DNC, MNK, SAM maybe even THF. Keep up the great content.
I have no idea how many times I reported on the forums Tourbillion wasn't working before they fixed it. I even had friends get on the JP forums and create bug posts on there to get it fixed. Glad it was finally changed though. I noticed you didn't mention strength for enhancing physical spell damage. I know the attack change to these spells were added a couple or few years back. Does increasing attack benefit these more now?
I'm sure some of the information here is dated but today, a serious end-game blue mage does not need close to 15 gear sets. You can do just fine with half that many sets.
At about 9:30 you mention that traits require 8 points to set, and while this is generally true, there are exceptions such as Sinker Drill giving 6, but still giving Critical Attack Bonus by itself. Also, whether Phalanx II from RDM will be better than Barrier tusk depends on what you're doing, and if you have a Phalanx+ set on BLU. I know it sounds odd, but you can sit in Phalanx+ gear when they cast on you, and that will boost the effectiveness, as it's based on the Phalanx+ of the recipient. Now, Phalanx of course takes damage straight off the top, so in these situations, it can make Phalanx better on large groups of monsters that don't hit as hard, whereas BT is better on cases where you are being hit for 200+ damage per swing.
BLU in FFXI has always an extremely awesome job in many aspects and probably one of my favorites if I am being honest. Unfortunately, it is not for me. Learning spells, while cool in terms of lore and just the mechanic itself, is awesome, but it has broken me. I have tried for so long to play the job and learn all the spells(and even just the essentials to get started), but I just can't deal. I'm hoping with the monthly job adjustments that eventually something is done to ease the pain of learning spells, but for now it will need to wait. Props upon props to everyone who stuck with it though. You all are the real heroes!
I jump on my NIN and I’m smacking WS and SCs effortlessly, sometimes so fast I just don’t even nuke cause it just slows down the barrage of WS my ninja can throw. Then I hop on my BLU and I just can’t produce the same amount of pain ☹️ At least I look cool?
Question regarding Iris for the FC/Spell interruption set. Do you use an exception with those swords if you're meleeing with other weapons or do you just eat the TP loss from the swap?
If you use gearswap you can precast the FC gear and midcast the SIRD set and cap both much more easily without ever changing weapons. SIRD gear only works when it is on so you have to be wearing it anytime you're getting hit. This means you need to have the set on right up to the completion of the cast which means you almost certainly won't get potency gear for whatever spell you're casting. But sometimes you have to take that loss to get something cast before you die.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I just wanted to comment that I don't agree with your group 1 merits. You're going to use affinity JAs (especially chain affinity) so rarely that it's not worth meriting recast timers over the bonus to potency and magic accuracy, even if the bonus is slight these days.
Heya, nice guide so far, but I really hope you will address Thibrion in offhand, because it's involved in strongest builds on BLU atm (with Tizona or Naegling main hand), but I'm slightly afraid you don't, because Tizona+Thribrion actually easily rivals heavy DD jobs under max buff scenario, which would conflict with cons you listed for the job.

Sadly this answered Zero questions lol, Danced around the important stuff but never explains it leaving people like myself still lost lol. How do you "Activate" said blue magic points? How do you get say Auto-refresh as a trait once you unlock say self destruct, See that's what a guide should explain, not just what the game tells you, Like how to get these stats to activate. I still have no idea how the points work at all. Your video's as of late are not very descriptive, mostly just glaze over what people already understand yet skip the massively important things like WTF is a Blu magic point and how do you add them. For example, You set a spell @8:51 it shows you used 6 points, wtf..... Lost, yet when I set spells like self destruct it doesn't give auto refresh because I need more points... what ever the F that means lol.... No one EVER goes into this they just tell you to do it hahaa fuckin seriously???
Buddy.... that's stuff that SHOULDN'T be explained in a guide like this. Guides like these are assuming you know the basics of the job and how certain things work in the end game. You are looking for a beginner's guide. They actually make it much easier to understand in game now than when it first came out. But I'll answer that concern. You don't really go out of your way to "unlock" points. They increase as you level. When you get merit points, you get another 5. And then with job points, you get more. The slots for spells are tied to your level with no way to increase them. So you have to work within those limits. Usually, you're working more to stay within your point balance and will be left with extra spell slots. If you use all of your available spell slots, but have points left over, redo your list. You can afford to take more powerful spells. As for the traits, you need a total of 8pts to it to unlock a trait. Increase it to 16 and you get rank 2. 24 gets you rank 3. So, if you have the gifts from job points, and just unlock Dual Wield, it'll automatically be Dual Wield III, again, that's if you have the job gifts. When you look at each individual spell that gives the possibility of a trait, there will be a number in parenthesis next to it. That's how many points that spell gives towards the trait. The other number is how many blue magic points it takes to set it. In the earlier levels, for example, most spells for auto-refresh only give 1-3 points to the trait, causing you to need to dedicate ~5 spell slots to just getting one rank of the spell. So traits, like Double Attack, don't increase in rank and the job point gift doesn't apply. However, the trade off is, if you set 16 trait points to Double Attack, instead of DA2, you get Triple Attack. So it's fun to play around yourself and see what you get and adjust for the situation at hand. Good rule of thumb, contrary to how social media would have you think, if you lack something and want it from someone else, simply asking will often get you positive results. Raging because the guy knows something you don't and didn't answer questions you had yet to ask? I won't say what that look is, but it ain't a good one.

WIKI IT YOU FOOL. You're asking for the barebones mechanics which you learn normally by PLAYING AND LEVELLING THE FUCKING JOB.
