I love their art because it's brave and free and not perfect or expected. Anyone can learn technical skills, but not everyone can be free. Your advice is excellent as always!
quite the opposite, in my opinion... anyone can do abstract trashy, scratchy, blotchy, random art, thats yeah.. "unique"

Van Goghs art is actually ugly, to me.. be hard to duplicate, yeah.. but easy to simulate.
Go be free somewhere in kindergarten. Art should never be compromised like this. Well it is anything but art. Cheap shock value at the most. Even if you know zero about art, I can't see how that garbage will appeal to anyone's sense of creativity. It's total and utter trash.

I love your honesty, your accurate observations. I am an artist and I fight and fight with my friends about how un exceptional Tracy Emmons, Basquiat, Keith Herring, Damien Hurst, Matisse, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, AND all of Impressionism, which relied upon an aggressive agent in The United States who were motivated to sell and was ready to spew a bunch of garbage about these works! When there is a struggle, a fight, an attempt to create something with difficulty for a purpose, it is not exceptional to me. This is why I adore Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Emil Nolde, and modern artists like Daniel Richter or George Condo, their imaginations flow naturally and easily. There is no struggle. If you struggle (and Tracy Emmmons actually talked about it to Sculptor Louise Bourgeois who called her out on it) then you are no more talented than anyone else who perhaps does not have the time or money to "work through" a talent which is unexceptional.

The absolute (and totally hilarious) last word about “understanding” Modern and Post Modern art is the online Atlantic essay by illustrator Brad Holland titled “Express Yourself: it’s Later than You Think.” I cannot recommend this to anyone enough. He is cynically dead-on about everything and I still laugh each time I read it.
A distance runner up would be Tom Wolfe’s “The Painted Word.”

I agree with this take. However, self-promotion is incredibly difficult for me. I was raised to always be humble, never have pride or celebrate my accomplishments and keep going for for more. When I try to communicate why my work is worthy of attention I always end up talking about other artists.

Related: i have been saying for YEARS that the major thing they teach at art school is how to come up with those absolutely ludicrous artist statements.
Interesting fact: Emin was almost kicked of the MA course at the RCA because of her “quality” of work (too busy getting pissed and dating the boys to make work). She was given a chance and had to create a piece to stay on the course. She was probably the least likely to succeed and sounded like a train wreck of a student. I think she became successful because of female artists touching on feminism was trending at the time. She’s a big fan of Basquait which is clear in her work. Btw…I also did a MA painting course at the RCA, so straight from the horses mouth. Just find a way to make bad art good. And Hirst employed struggling artists to paint his spots. 3 layers of gloss paint for each spot. So he didn’t even make them but got millions for them.

I am an artist; not professional as I didn't want to fight that fight. I am approaching 70 tears old now. For most of my life I have known that being a great technical artist is not equal to being a successful artist. I have also known that being a successful artist is not equal to being a great artist. It is obvious. Consider for a moment the wealthy among the ancient Romans 2000+ years ago. What did the wealthy consider vital to have taught to their children? Among a few other subjects Oratory. Oratory was the ability to clearly argue your views, win the argument or if not win then convince others even if wrong. Convincing others did not depend on being right but being a better more skillful orator. That skill would lead to success, and it did. All successful politicians depend on that skill. Art is also cultural. The most successful Chinese artist will not sell as well outside their culture, generally. Being a successful artist also depends on not just convincing the public you are great but convincing the wealthy you are great. They spend the money. Fun video. Thanks!

All the "Great" artists sell a story not a product.
Leonardo Devincci only became famous after his painting was stolen centuries after his death. Then they looked at his life and hyped his genius.
Caravaggio was a murderer.
Vincent Van Gogh never sold a painting in his life but cutting off his ear made him famous.
Picasso was a child prodigy who peaked early and then hyped himself and his "revolutionary" art.
Over and over again it is the story that makes the artist great not the art.

I absolutely agree with you. People are getting dumber - including the art promoters. They're promoting garbage. Those who buy this garbage is joke. It's lowered the standards of our culture. Same is happening with poetry. Little nursery rhymes of Rapi Kaur suddenly make her a literary star.
Your'e right of course, but I still know good from garbage. Never compromise your standards - even if the modern buying market is dumb as a dodo. Gen Z really dropped the standards of everything. Nothing to be proud of there.
