  • Dr. Bob Randall shares about his Ice-Cream Banana trees. They are also known as Blue Java Bananas due to their blue hue while on the tree.
They are the easiest bananas to grow in the Houston area because they are extremely freeze hardy.

4-500 bananas off one plant!? 😳

One plant will spread through the rhizomes and sends out 'pups' of new banana 'trees' for a stand of bananas. In turn, one plant, produces many banana trees over time. Bananas are technically lilies. One Banana tree produces one bunch of bananas, then that tree is pruned down, allowing the 'daughters' to take over. Prune to 3 trees for best production: Grandmother, Mother, and Daughter for the biggest bunches. It is a lot of work because it means monthly removing all of the other banana pups! When planting a banana tree, designate 8 square feet for a stand of bananas.

Great video. Where can I get an ice cream banana tree here in Houston?

Good question. Try a local family owned nursery and/or feed stores. They carry specialty items specific for our climate and gumbo clay soil. A few are JRN Nurseries, Buchanan's Native Plants, Wabash Antique and Feed Store, Quality Feed and Gardens, and Southwest Fertilizer in the Houston area. With the Winter Storm Uri freeze, local supplies of fruit trees are in high demand and availability limited. You may also try by word of mouth to find gardeners who are growing Ice Cream Banana and can share a 'pup,' the new shoots coming up, which are divided and rooted in to start new banana trees.

      Are these native to Houston?

No I wouldn’t think tropical plants are native to sub tropical regions

Also build a mound of dirt and hay with fencing around the plant to protect it during winter freezes or any below freezing weather

@@coater31 They are adapted. Not native to Texas.
