  • I like banana, but something I like far more is Ice cream. When I read about this Blue Java Banana, otherwise known as "ice cream banana", I was intrigued. When I saw it for sale at Home Depot, I knew I had to buy it! I created this video to show how I planted a banana tree, along with some of the considerations for the backyard orchard.

    Just subscribed to your channel and I really appreciate you taking the time to give good information. I live in Texas and where I am our soil composition is almost the same so this really helps. I know that my earth worms are really busy right now haha. Keep up the awesome work!!!

    With you avocados make a mound of soil then plant it on there will help with drainage and will give the stabilizing root a chance to go down without any obstructions

      Our avocados have TAKEN OFF since this video, thankfully! Upping their fertilizer, giving them shade on the hottest days, and planting them in a mound has helped a lot. Where were you 5 years ago when I first planted avocados! Lol

    Yep I have the same banana plant, I have another one i cant recall the name but they are getting close to starting to flower I think. They both have pups coming off of them.

    Now pray that you actually purchased a blue java. I purchased a blue java from home depot in lakewood several years back. It was actually a nam wa, which is totally different texture, a bit slimy, and taste more like a cooking banana. You can tell it is nam wa if the hands connecting to stalk is a collar as opposed to knuckles. Blue java has knuckles connecting to flower stalk. Good luck 🤞

      Yeah, it'll be luck of the draw on these guys. 🤦‍♂️ I'll look out for those distinctions. It's too bad they messed it up so badly, and got the wrong tissues out to so many.

    I live in Southern Virginia. I am reading about this tree... I think I can possibly get this to grow here. Lots of work but the soil is fantastic here. I understand these particular bananas will survive low Temps. Do you think I could pull it off? They are supposed to fruit in 9 months. I think I could get a plant the size of the one you planted and put it in the ground around March and have fruit before the next winter.... Thoughts?

    • @TheBusyGardener

      Surviving and fruiting are two different things. I'm still learning my banana plant, so can't help a ton just yet, unfortunately.

    I can't wait to taste this fruit! Have you ever tried this type of banana? If you haven't got one at a nursery near you, you can order this cold-hardy banana here: amzn.to/2kcXZEI . Any young banana care tips that have worked well for you?

    Mmmmmmmm, ice cream! I would build a mulch pile on that crummy dirt and then do a worm dance. 🍌

    how long does the banana bear fruit?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 года назад

      Each stalk fruits only once and should then be removed, allowing a "pup" which naturally grow at the base of the plant to grow into the next fruiting stalk.

    So- how's your banana plant doing almost a year later? I have two I just bought but haven't planted yet.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  4 года назад +1

      Banana is doing well! Probably 12 feet tall right now. The cold snap in the winter damaged some of the leaves, but the plant is doing well overall. No fruiting yet, unfortunately.

    The "blue java" banana, a hardy, cold-tolerant banana said to have a consistency like ice cream and a flavor similar to vanilla

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  3 года назад

      That's what I hear, although we won't be able to taste test the "Blue Java". It turns out that MANY MANY bananas being sold as Blue Java are actually "Namwah" due to a mix up in propagation a while ago.

      Hello.
      It's not good.
      What a waste of time
      I am going to Bali next winter to spend months there .. and I have a friend there waiting for me with real Java blue banana rhizomes that he bought in Java even personally, last week … my request
      if i knew how to send root tips all over the place to anyone who asks me to fill this void and this difficulty of getting the real thing and not just any kind of little bananas .... some people mistakenly believe that Amazon can selling them seeds.. it's too funny ... I'm even ready to go on a pheno hunt .. I'm even ready to possibly cross with dwarf banana in order to reduce its size .. if possible to keep the flavor of the blue banana by doing that… A lot of work awaits me if I embark on this fantastic adventure… what do you think?

    Namwah, not the actual Blue Java/Ice Cream. Even though the pic on the label is the correct one, and that pic is a copy of the one in the Thomas Lessard book on bananas.
