In the prestige the point is that he drowns himself and a clone gets created . The clone lives on every time. The tragedy of it is more that michael cain told him thay drowning was the easiest way to go just to comfort him after his wifes death. So thats how hugh jackman decides to kill himself every time. But then at the end of the movie michael cain reveal that drowning is actually the most painful way to die and hugh jackman realises that he's been putting hundreds of himself through the same pain that his wife suffered over and over again.

Also it's never established if he or the clone is drowned, not that it matters I suppose but it definitely does matter to the consciousness that gets drowned and puts a collective toll on the one guy that cheated death a hundred times. Really makes you think in a half a second hollywood kind of way.
@@tappy8741 the clone gets created in the second section of the machine right? how is it ambigous which one the real one is? the real one remains on the stage (or rather he falls through and drowns under the stage). and the clone walks out from behind the audience.
Now, for those wondering - i think the above explanation is what the movie wants you to believe, but, in reality there's an extra plot twist potentially hidden at the end. i.e. the machine never worked that its all a ruse created by Hugh Jackman's character to frame Christian Bale. Look up "the machine doesn't work" theory if you're interested. It suddenly fills a lot of movie plot holes. e.g. why the bodies in the tanks haven't decomposed.
