    The sheer waste of space inside of that NES cartridge is insane.

      +Marco Andre Hansen there are some games which make more use of that space. But just look at Japanese famicom games, they're pretty much all half size of the NES cartridges, with the same content.

      Marco Andre Hansen Nintendo wanted the American NES to feel like a VCR instead of a game system, especially since Atari had crashed the video game market in America. So they made the NES a front loader with huge carts that more resembled a VHS.

    You could've easily fit a Sata SSD with the casing removed. usually SSD's aren't even half the size of the shell it's in, but that's only for the new ones. just make sure to get a plastic SSD (metal SSD's use the metal for cooling, so maybe cut the SSD shell back) and you just pull the case off and stick it in one of those USB 3 enclosure boards

    If you're going to remove the label, do it FIRST before even opening the cartridge. If you've never used a heat-gun before, be extremely careful. The core gets VERY hot and it's even easier to MELT plastic than you'd think. I'd start far enough away that the amount of heat to the cartridge is minimal. Too much heat and the plastic will definitely warp.

    • @SwitchAndLever

      +Gizmo 73 it would be somewhat easy to do with keeping the original circuit board with edge connectors, just wiring the hard drive cables into it and the USB adapter into the socket inside the NES. Long time viewer, first time posting...you have a great channel, awesome ideas, and very informative. Thanx. Although, I admire your work, I don't want to step on anybody's toes, but there may be a simpler way to remove adhesives from any surface, much safer than a heat gun, specially fir those, who don't always use a heat gun, and aren't accustomed to such. WD-40, one can either tear the stickers off of a given surface, or simply lift the corners of the stickers and with any small implement (Q-tip, toothpick, or pinky) apply WD-40, the liquid will spread something like capillary action, specially with torn sticker, the material absorbs it like a sponge, you can spread it around with a finger, to get more of the remover effect, and use a small but wider implement to help with sticker removal, by using said implement, similar to a window squeegee. Afterwards use a dish washing liquid solution, in the US there is a product called "Dawn" dish washing liquid, which "takes grease out of your way", and is always used on animals, after oil spills, safely. Use a damp rag to wipe the WD-40 off, again: after sticker is removed, and you'll have a clean undamaged surface. Or, to speed up cleaning time after using WD-40 to remove sticker, you can use a higher concentration of isopropyl alcohol, in a well ventilated area or alcohol wipes, to get the same clean surface results, I prefer this method, because the alcohol affects the plastic a little giving the adhesive in the sticker, better...well, adhesion. Sorry, if I overstepped, I just thought I'd give back an idea.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  7 лет назад +2

      Not at all, I really appreciate input on how to do things differently, and I'm sure that your tip will come in handy for someone. WD-40 is indeed great for this, but I simply did not have the patience to let it do its work, and then clean the cartridge thoroughly as well. If you leave any WD-40 on the surface, the sticker won't stick at all, which would be unfortunate. Depending on your sticker solution you may not need more stickiness anyhow. These were proper vinyl stickers I ordered, and if you look closely I messed up the NES label first, having to remove it and reposition it. I could hardly not get it off, even though I barely laid it down.
      The main thing is to not use any sort of solvent, no thinner, no acetone, not anything which could damage the plastic. WD-40 has kerosene, but it's mild enough to not bother most plastics.

    • @eddietowers5595
      @eddietowers5595 7 лет назад +1

      thanks for replying. yeah, whenever i use this method, I make sure its when there isn't anything going on, like other projects or going out, i leave it more as a Sunday project, but, you'd be surprised how fast this can be done (within the time frame of using a heat gun, removing the sticker, and replacing it with a new one), as long as the WD-40 is spread, fast enough, but your correct, there are a multitude of methods to do such, and with Makers, such as yourself and many others, ideas are limitless. thanx, I'm already anticipating your next video...now, should I get kettle corn pop corn or buttered, for your next video?

    8:34 Looks like you could fit 2 or (with the removal of the screw post) 3 inside that cartridge.
    Nest them together by turning every other one upside down, and you might fit 4. Looking again @10:06, probably could score a bonus with a total of 5, along with thinner-gauge wires (4 side-by-side; one along the side opposite the screw post).
    Now, you would be able to put an entire arcade inside of just one cartridge! Game on!
    Also: Solid state drives, due to their smaller form factor, would probably let you score bonus points in a similar fashion inside NES or SNES carts.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  7 лет назад

      +Double Dare Fan haha, I really didn't want to remove the screw post though, as that would mean I would have to glue the cartridge together in the end. Why not just fit a few and a raid controller, so you could have a raid cartridge? Won't you think of the read/write speeds!!!
      I wanted to go mainly with things I already had though, but there's definitely nothing stopping anyone from shoving other drives in there.

      If you don't have a hot air gun, a hair dryer will work fine as well. WD-40 definitely works, but it's messy, and you'll have to remove it all with something like dishwashing liquid otherwise the new sticker may not stick properly.

    I thought the reverse was going to be done, like somehow connecting a video-game ROM into a SATA or USB, and somehow it would work on a PC or something. What about moving a PC board into a video game case? It would be the only coherent thing to do to use those cartridges.

  • @Engitainment

    Loved the idea of this, sent it to a friend who has access to more cartridges than I. As a thought, the SNES usb connector could be moved down (further through the slot at the bottom) to accommodate the cable and hard drive, unless the cable itself is too bulky for that.

    • @SwitchAndLever

      I hear you, but the other way would be having the USB-jack sticking out of the cartridge, and if that's plugged in it will effectively block any other neighboring ports on the computer. All of these are still more for style, and the fun of it, rather than practicality. A proper hard drive enclosure will be smaller and more discrete than any of these are.

    You can fit a standard 2.5 inch HDD without any need for soldering in both a NES and snes case. You've done the NES cart the wrong way round.
    You can also order empty cart shells if you don't want to damage old games.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  4 года назад

      Unfortunately you're wrong. The mounting posts for the screws as well as the sunken area at the top of the cartridge (as seen around 3:11) prevents the harddrive from fitting properly that way, especially so if you want to actually fit the USB board in where I wanted it to be. Inside the SNES case there's just no way that would fit. Maybe if you're american it would, I know the cartridges over there were different.

While a bit fiddly, for people who don't run multiple displays there is a single-window mode and for the basic task of simple image work, it works well enough. It would have been better to route the connections thru the gold fingers of the cartridge and make a cartridge to usb hub you could plus them into... while at the same time providing the mini usb and led to the side or too of the cartridge. Plugging in thru the bottom seems like it could be a bit more difficult because you have to look inside the slot for the port. Plus the led is hidden almost entirely. A light spreader inserted into the design would make this pro level for sure.
    Comments aside, great video Sir. 😁

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  6 лет назад

      But then I'd have to carry the hub with me anywhere I go as well, so it would increase the impracticality vastly. I mention in the video why the USB sockets are where they are. I wanted this to look as anonymous as possible, and making a hole in the side of the cartridge would've gone against that.
      Cheers, glad you liked it though.

      @@SwitchAndLever Bringing in more plastic to the environment is not a good thing indeed. Having said that; throwing out computer parts such as pcb's instead of disposing of those properly is even worse. What I meant by waste wasn't resources. I don’t assume you want to fight, but usually comments like this expect that I haven’t actually thought through the choices I’ve made. I take an inordinate amount of times planning these, and I have considered what you suggest even before starting this project.
      Yes, you could use an extension cable but it would make it a lot less straightforward to use. USB-A female to male extension cables are by far not as common as a USB mini cable, so if you ever forget it you’re pretty screwed, and since they’re not really used for much in normal situations you now have a cable which you’d only use with this device most likely. It’s just not practical, and would entirely break the aesthetic of the cartridge.

    I want to contest the notion that one can't fit an entire hard drive inside a game boy cartridge, there are some very small HDD called Microdrive, eyeballing the dimensions I bet one can fit one of those and the corresponding adapter into a game boy cartridge. I admit that is not practical or necessary, I just wanted to point to those amazing little tings!
    I really like this project and surely will attempt it with one of my nes cartridges that does not work. Thanks!

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  7 лет назад

      +Josuel Servin well by that standard you could argue that the USB flash drive already is a hard drive, as they have more in common with SSD hard drives anyway. I hear what you're saying though, though the microdrives being the size of a CF card there would not be space to screw the game boy cartridge together again. As far as I know there were no bigger microdrives than 8gb as well, the USB drive fits 64gb :)

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  7 лет назад +1

      Better is entirely subjective. The method you're describing would be more costly. As I mentioned in the video I picked up the cartridges from flea markets, and the harddrives rescued from various places. This build cost almost nothing. When you're starting to consider SSDs we're heading into a completely different investment.
      At least the bootleg cartridges I've seen simply doesn't hold up. They're either made from a different plastic, that doesn't have the same feel, or the color is off. Not to mention, if I wanted to, I could easily throw in the insides from these cartridges and put them into a bootleg cartridge case, if I was so inclined. Also, memory cards, like CF, are not made to be used as harddrives with constant read and writing. They're not meant to last as long, leading to premature data loss.

      It's always funny how people who haven't built it are online experts.
