  • More and more it’s looking like we’re ‘in a Barbie world’, as the much anticipated film is released on Friday. But after claims from journalist Sarah Vine that “Barbie is every girl’s gateway drug to a life of self-loathing”, is it time for us to stop idolising the popular character? Fresh from seeing the movie, Brenda says that playing with Barbies helped her experiment with fashion, and Kelle thinks her dolls definitely influenced the way she wanted to look, while Coleen and Charlene believe that Barbie is an old school concern compared to other influences. I played with Barbie ALL the time when I was a kid. It never did me in a harm and I’ve never wanted to look like Barbie; in fact it made me more creative as I used to make up all kinds of stories with my dolls and I put on shows with them for family and I made my own movies. Now I’m about to start a degree in Acting & Performance. Really fun memories. I love Barbies and I still love them to this day.

She’s a better role model than 99.9% of people on tv these days.

Barbie didn't do me harm. The toxic environment I grew up in did.

I can't believe I watched this, they're talking about a child's toy from years ago. Kids enjoyed it, it was very popular in it's day so what. This really is a waste of tv time.

In a way she was a good role model, stepped into male dominated jobs and excelled, taught us girls that life is not all about getting married and having babies, but Frankly it's just a toy and as a girl who played with them it was just using your imagination and having fun with hair, makeup and clothes, the questions we ask these days are getting more and more ridiculous, the human race has gone way past its peak, its sad

Hrm, see... I feel like, being older.... and following the careers of more models, I question if there is a "Just for the bragging rights" pheonomenon in men age 23 and up specifically around adult 5'9+ BMI 18 - 19... part of me, seeing this question in adulthood, looks at barbie, the proportions and embellishments in design here (i.e. the rounding of the foot) and wonder, if certain things were projected onto her from the adult men and women in our lives and socialized through mirror neurons bc... well, a lot of women encourage young adult women to "enjoy it while they can" etc. and I think it's safe to say we have all felt at very least a wee little itsy bitsy twinge of what could possibly resemble idk, like, jealousy or something of a skinny-minnie frienemy at one point when your partner or fwb seems to remember the skinny-minnie's name... rooted in I think possibly a bias that many people could believe it is the only joie de vivre, the only peak moment a lot of men know- which I think we all very graciously try to forget.
And then somewhere, lodged in the mire of all of that, suspended, is an innocuous childhood toy, that, mm yes, was kind of boring, but also yes, offered introduction to narrative and enthusiasm for adulthood ❤ and really was just a toy.
I think there can be something petrifying when confronted with all of that honestly, but here I am aware I could be overanalyzing a childhood toy 😅 And then, imagine... walking through a pre-2010's Barbie Museum could really just set all that off. Lol.
Anyway, regarding the BMI 18 -19 etc. phenomenon... I quesrion if there was also a criteria of carrying an air about oneself of expecting or anticipating social saturation and welcome wherever you could possibly walk into. Maybe this is the "personality" thing and how it ties in, idk... because I'm not sure everyone could expect welcome like this. I don't even know where to begin researching this part of the joke here... hmm

I was joking but I want to be clear that I don't want anyone to feel pressured around their body image. Be happy be healthy

Never owned a Barbie but had one Sindy doll without all the paraphernalia that comes with them these days.I really wasn’t that interested and the novelty wore off very quickly. They certainly had no influence on my life and to be honest, I wouldn’t go outside my back door to go and see the film.

Not everyone is gonna have the Barbie body everyone’s body shape is different people should love you for who you are not because you have the next biggest designer handbag or car

Nobody has the Barbie body shape. She is a stylized doll. We accepted that years ago when we were little girls and played with her and enjoyed her. Why can't people do the same today?

Barbie didn’t do any harm, the media and their portrayal of the “perfect” woman is what caused harm

Black barbie was on the go years and years ago, kelly talking out her but. The fact shes saying barbie was an innfunce when she watched baywatch is weird also. Most little girls just see a doll. I collected them and im different and i never thought once they arent like me or i had to be like them. I just liked pretending
