I delivered pizzas in a 2002 Toyota Echo for years. Sadly, I retired it at 293k. It still ran, but needed emissions and brake work that would cost too much to justify. I had a 2002 Toyota Echo (automatic transmission, 2dr coupe, manual windows) for like 80,000 miles (80k-160,000mi roughly) before I wrecked it and it was reliable cheap transportation. Plus I left the accident uninjured.
Currently own a 2010 Toyota Yaris and it's also a very reliable cheap car. Plus it's a manual transmission 2dr hatchback with power windows, so the perfect upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

I usually agree with Scotty but his comments on the Yaris I am having a hard time with. I have bought 3 Yaris vehicles. A 2006 for my daughter, a 2009 and 2012 and all were mechanically excellent cars. The all had the same engine and transmission. I never had a second of mechanical problems out of any of them. There was plenty of room in the engine compartments to do work on them but I never had to change a belt, replace any engine component, or have any repairs. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I was looking for an inexpensive car to drive a lot of miles.

So I’ve this car for little over a month now and my only complaint is on the highway going 75-80 MPH I’m at 3k rpm’s which seems normal but I can hear that engine/transmission just going in that 4th gear makes it seem like loud road noise but it’s more engine noise. I’m sure it’d be much quieter if it had a 5th gear or overdrive
      I’ve taken it 90-100mph
No issue no struggle or stress tack shows 3,500 RPM -normal for being in 4th
But as soon as I let off the gas it drops to 60-65 pretty quickly
I believe it cuz it’s stressing on that 4th gear even tho it doesn’t seem like it at 3k -3,5k RPM
      And my electric gas gadge
Shows 2 bars then next start up has 1 flashing bar..and couple start up later it’s back at 2 bars.
      Drive 50 miles and it’s on 1 flashing bar…goes back n fourth.
So I end up filling it and stops at 9 gals in a 11.5 gal tank.

Oh boy, as soon as you said Camry my heart sank. I just bought a used 2019 Camry. Luckily you then said exactly that car as being a vast improvement

Been driving an 07 Yaris sedan for the last 3 years going on 4. It's ugly, slow, uncomfortable, but it's good on gas and it's a damn tank. Originally bought it because I couldn't afford anything else at the time and I knew a Toyota wouldn't give me problems that I can't afford in the first place. But the thing is strong. I drive it like a maniac and it can handle all my beatings. I can literally name the repairs I've had to do for it since buying it:
    1. Water pump which is usually replaced around the mileage I had. ($200)
    2. Brakes (don't remember but it was cheap).
    3. Shocks ($120)
    4. Oil filter ($5).
    5. Replaced stock radio because no Aux or Bluetooth ($70).
That's it. The rest is all just oil changes.

We wanted one but the prices keeps being out of reach for one now. A fully stock one now is $500,000 from it's original price $31,000

Shadow K they’re not as high as $500,000 not sure where you been looking at them but I see some for as low as $30,000 for a stock one and as high as $80,000 but those are fully modded though

Our family's car growing up was a 1990 Tercel. That car made some long road trips, and yes... it eventually died due to the issues Scotty mentioned, lol!

I had a sage green Tercel that burnt oil and was scary to be a passenger on the highway. My whole family applauded the day I sold it!
