    Let me know if you like this type of video where we cover a lot of general stuff or if you prefer more modeling of real world parts?

    • @CaraesNaur
      @CaraesNaur 3 года назад +5

      I always prefer tutorials that focus on tools & techniques rather than the final outcome.
      FWIW, I started learning FreeCAD about 3 weeks ago and a few days ago ran out of good 0.19 tutorials... So I've been modelling a version of the Napier Lion engine (W12) scaled down from 24 to 4 liters displacement for automotive application. So far I have block, crankshaft, main rod, link rod, piston, and main bearing cap. All basic engine geometry parameterized in a spreadsheet.
      By "good" tutorial I mean narrated in English by a real voice, knows what they're doing before starting out, and follows best practices. I quickly learned about the TNP, so I cringe every time I see a sketch created on a face.
      Yours is one of a handful of channels that fit this criteria.
      When I was building the crankshaft, I found clone positioning deeply confusing. I've sorted out all the clone positioning, but still don't understand how I got the clones into the correct positions.

    Fantastic job on this video, you taught me a least two things I had missed earlier in my learning experience with FreeCAD. I still struggle with knowing which plane to use and trying to figure out offsets, but all in all, I am quite content and still challenged. Seems like some of my friends have discovered that I am learning some CAD, and they are bringing their ideas and needs to me for some help and 3D printing. • @Adventuresincreation

      @@Adventuresincreation Yes, I noticed you can rename them and am guessing that if you give it a name it then will use that over the default system temp names? Lets hope 20 fixes this since I as well ran into it a few times not sure really what was going. Also if you can rename them I'm wondering then again if we can create a custom macro to then rename all faces to xFace## where the macro can check if the name starts with X or even if there are two places possible the name can be stored.

    Thank you very much for great tutorials!
    You showed in this episode that creating a sketch based on a face of a body can lead to the hard to predict results. That happens if you decide to change something in the very initial sketch defining the body shape and it changes the number of faces the body has.
    But what if you do that in this way.
    1. Mark four vertices of the (rectangular) face on which you want to make a sketch.
    2. Click on the datum plane. The plane is created on the face. But it is not related to the face number but to the vertices numbers.
    3. Draw the sketch on the datum plane.
    4. Create a pocket or a pad depending what is needed.
    I tried this on one example and it seemed to be insensitive to the change of the number of faces in the body. It seems that the vertices numbers remain unchanged,
    I am a very beginner to 3-D CAD so please let me know if this concept makes sense or I am missing something important.

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  2 года назад

      I think your concept would work, as long as you don't have anything relying on the faces within the model.

    I am loving all your tutorials!
    I used your instructions to make a macro to not only start a new file-part-body-sketch but also to create a symmetrical square, rectangle, and circle around the origin since we've been using them so much as a starting point in a sketch. I gave them all just random starting dimensions (10mm or so) and then all I need to do is double click and change the dimensions to what my specific project needs. I even did 2 circle ones so I can choose whether I want them constrained on the radius or the diameter.

    I would like to see a video “How to constrain like a Pro”. You did touch on that but would like the “don’t do this” and this is why you don’t want to do this. I did notice that all constraints were applied to the sketch and then you made only one reference to the axis to make the sketch lock to the origin reference. I think some of my issues are because I am not doing this. It would be a great topic for beginners. All your hard work is appreciated…..many thanks!

    • @stever3886
      @stever3886 3 года назад

      There are many videos on the constraints explaining what they are and and how to apply them. But there hardly none on constraint pitfalls. For example I was over constraining I the beginning because I was working a lot in just sketcher to design a servo linkage geometry, never padding to a solid. The geometry was multi-level fulcrum, bearings servo throw etc. I was also doing that because I was unaware of Tech Draw workbench that does all the dimensions for you when you create a page. So maybe it starts off with a constraint discussion and ends with a intro into Tech Draw. I’m now going to wiki pages for more information.

    I accept I am probably doing something wrong but when I execute the Start Macro (which was recorded and edited in line with your tutorial) the scale of the Axes, and hence the first sketch, is enormous and is flat, not isogonal. Which means I have to compress the scale in order to get it to a meaningful level to allow me to start a sketch. Update: I "think" I have cracked it. Go to Edit - Preferences- General - Macro - Gui Commands. Check the box - Record GUI Commands, Uncheck the box - Record as Comment. Record your Start Macro then Edit it by adding # and a space before the Gui.runCommand('Std_DigMacroRecord',0) which in my version is Line 6. Save and run the Start Macro. This modification gave me the same looking Axes view I am getting by manually clicking New Document - new Part - New Body - Sketch.

    Ian. Many thanks for your excellent series and the great way you convey your message. Really clear and helps an 'old fart' like me. However, a couple of issues I have run across and I was wondering if you might have the answers. 1. First, I have made a 'StartUp' macro following your instructions, and it works well. What I was wondering was whether thyere is a way to have that macro run automatically every time I start Freecad. 2. Second is a much larger issue in that I have downloaded and set up Freecad at least 8 times now - including about 5 times using the "working' version, and a couple of times trying the weekly build, but every time it loads and runs but with NO MACROS. When I try to add them from Wiki through the AddOn Manager, I get an error message telling me that 'GitPython is not installed'. I am running the latest version of Python (10) so not sure what to do. Any suggestions? Cheers, Noel

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  2 года назад

      Thanks Noel, I appreciate the feedback. #1 I don't think there is a way to automatically run a Macro at start up. #2 This seems to be a common problem, I am not sure if it's something to do with the PATH variable not including the location of the GitPython software. Many people have cured it with a re-install (I think that sets the PATH variable) but this doesn't appear to be fixing it for you. I am not sure what OS you are using but you might want to try calling GitPython from the command line and see if that leads you to why it's not working. - I assume it is installed on your system.

      @@Adventuresincreation Please sir, I finished my homework. However, when I did what Weliver Gary did last year, but using v0.20, it *didn't* seem to work. My pocket disappeared if I modified its parent pad.
      I slogged away at this, so bear with me! I see that one can give constraints a name, so in the first Sketch I named the X- and Y- offsets of the 'datum' at the lower right, and the height, top and bottom dimensions. (I thought adjusting the dimensions to make the maths easy was cheating...). I also added a reference dimension for the slope angle at the left, to save myself some calculation.
      Then, I made a datum plane in the XZ plane of the first Pad, and moved it using the Sketch.Constraint.[name] syntax: up by the Y-offset, across by the X-offset minus the bottom dimension, and rotated it by the slope. I can sketch on that plane, and it doesn't get nobbled by the TNI.
