Fun fact! The large rectangular piece with the view port on it in the middle of the dreadnought is actually a refridgerator that houses all the temperature sensitive lunch supplies like Custodes-Cola and space ham! The view port is there because one lucky marine must sit inside it to guard those most precious supplies while piloting the large robot. Also the hand is there so he can reach stuff on the top shelves of Last Wallmarts
I’ve read my Kotex religiously, and I must say, all your technical terminology is correct. Only thing I’d point out is, instead of wiping off the oil paint splatters with an ear plunger, you should use the pads supplied with the Kotex. Then, you can run up a beach with your red setter, or a canine pal of your choice. Excellent video. Thank you.
An amazing paint job I’m going to have to give this 100 out of 100 because I never thought about using that paint on the dreadnought I always use ultramarine blue on mine
@@Groundeffected it absolutely is. I used a rattle can to do the volumetric lighting (which wasnt as precise but still works) and then panel-lined/wiped away excess. Once it was good to go i used the contrast paint to hit the high spots and then a darker one for below. i found that i just needed to do a little wet blending between the two to really get the transition but if i, a ham-fisted new painter can pull it off, you can too. just gotta give it a go. side note, contrast paint is super easy to clean off if you're unhappy with the result. it took me two tries to get it right so dont be afraid to mess it up.
Really like your style. New to the hobby and painting in general so I love seeing difference techniques and styles. Thanks for sharing your art with us!
I am returning back to Warhammer 40k gaming after more than a decade away from the hobby. The best way for me to get back into it, in my honest opinion, is the Warhammer Imperium Magazine. I get an army of necrons and one of ultramarines by the end of the magazine's 80 issues. so... your recent Ultramarine videos have been very inspirational. Back when I was in the hobby, it didn't get more advanced than Prime/Base-Coat/Wash/Drybrush, or the classic Games Workshop 'Eavy Metal method. I am loving the advances in paints and painting techniques, as well as the increased detail in model quality. Thank you for all you are doing Dad. :)
Looks fine to me, and I been playing marines since I was 12. This is the first video I saw from you, and its the commentary that got me to subscribe cuz its not just another warhammer painting video, it was funny.
I paint eavy metal, anything else was heretical to me...until i stumbled upon this, youve made me rethink my life choices, absolutely amazing!! Plez can you do a Dark Angel!!!!
my experiments with trying OSL have not gone well to say the least but practice makes perfect. I actually picked up the marnius calgar model this weekend because of your videos. I want to try the volumetric highlighting that you do. It makes your models look so awesome. keep the amazing videos coming!!
brother I love your high contrast style. not sure I can grit my teeth and do it but it looks great. I lack the confidence to have my mistakes so readily shown!
This is the first video of yours that I have watched and love your funny man attitude 😂 This video also teaches a massive lesson about sometimes less is definitely more!
You forgot to give your walking fridge a name. :) It goes under the skull eagle. You're the second one I've seen doing the dry brushing the endoskeleton with silver. Most seem to just paint it fully metallic.
Im not a fan of the Smurfy Boys but that blue turned out sexy on your robot! Nice work, and I look forward to trying some of your techniques on my redemptor.
Would you show how you paint black armor sometime? I like your approach to (relatively) fast and simple painting of clean, eyecatching results, and clean black armor continues to be my weakest link.
Check my community posts. I just posted a dude. Like an idiot I didn’t record it but I will buy one or print one and do one for a video. If that’s what you thinking? That one was stupid easy.
Ever tried cutting in further after your volumetric with a nadir (reverse zenithal) of Paynes grey ink? It should bring even more depth and gradient when you shoot your blues, later.
Check out eyeshadow applicators, they are better for removal than cotton swabs, won't leave any fuzzies. Makeup supplies are awesome for miniatures supplies, see you have the sponges and makeup removal pads. Always raiding the dollar store for makeup supplies.
dreadnaughts are cool, back in the day they used to be super chunky, they are very aesthetically pleasing i think. the dreadnaught Ancient Rylanor is someone you should read about. short version is that he was an Emperor's Children space marine dreadnaught and when his dad told the Emperor that they weren't friends anymore Rylanor got sad. nearly spit an entire mouthful of water all over my laptop during the intro. Even as a warhammer fun, your constant antagonizaing of the community is hilarious.
Lol. Yea. I’m just filling space (lol) as at the moment I’m between opening my studio ( I quit my job to go work for myself) I have some huge ideas for some crazy cool prints soon!!
I love your method for this, but just a small change in your order of operations (your process) will help you. Do this next time: Prime > zenethil > airbrush your contrast blue > gloss varnish > apply your transfers > apply your oil wash > clean the oil wash > matte varnish > paint your other details. Again, i'm not trying to tell you how to do your thing here. Its easier to do your decal/oil phase together over a gloss varnish. Viscosity and all that stuff.
He says in the video that he's doing it that way, oil wash then blue rather than blue then black because he wants the dark areas to be dark blue rather than black. It's a similar technique to preshading used by virtually all military modellers.
I love this project. I started one myself, and beginning to build a warhammer army. My question is , how many layers do you spray on the model ,do you thin the paint?
No. It won’t. I’ll be totally honest there’s a reason for the oils. It’s built different to the washes. Also it’s cheap as heck dude will last ages too
I don't know anything about 40k, but this looks amazing and you did one hell of a painting job. I hope on the field this thing is as good as it looks xD
To be honest we probably know the same amount of info bar a couple bits I may have head here and there. I just like the models and I like to paint them haha I hope he’s a badass too
This should work with pretty much any color right? Like for instance a Rhinox Hide base, white volumetric, and then a transparent green for a certain dead boi army hmm
But... you didn't use white this time for edge highlight, did you? It's more like blue grey wolf kind of color, isn't it? I also think it looks great that way.
When you apply the oil wash and then clean it up, how long do you need it to cure? I read that oil takes a while to cure and if it doesn’t cure fully, paint on top of it/varnish might crack. Cheers, great video!
I am going to try and replicate this paint job. It is awesome!! btw if you dont mind my asking, where are you from? Can't place the accent. Please continue to create more videos like this!!
Yea of course you can. Make sure it’s a brighter colour for highlight and mains then use a nice dark ink for shadows even shades or washes work for shadows too
I cant seem to get Talassar blue to end up light like this, always tend to put way too much on and it just goes to a really dark blue. Did you thin yours at all?
you can thin it with water. i didnt thin it much here probably a drop or two just to help flow. the trick is to do another layer of white once you let the first layers dry. it has to be super white
Can you just fire those contrast paints through the air brush or do you need to water / thin them down too ? And awesome video the model looks sick dude 👌
You can totally paint them through the air brush without thinning I thin them to make tints but some are a tiny bit thicker than others and they need to be thinned it just depends on the situation and the specific paint.

Really like the blue and hitting the edges with the white.
Yea I do like it too dude. It’s super potent
I like sharp freaking bright edges!
Great video and thanks for the great information
Words for the white box! Like your take on this unit. About to do one myself and you have sold me on trying the white highlights.
It’s a scary one!! You can start off with a bit of blue at first mixed in and when you see it’s all gonna be ok then bring out the whites!!
Please.. more of these videos. My god this was helpful. I even picked up that matt medium varnish. Absolute hero

Thank you for watching my dude. Hope you found some good info

That technique with the white gives some impressive results.

The "II" on the bobotboi indicates how many pack lunches they are carrying.
I love how he pokes fun at the Warhammers.
Warhammerers*?
Yea sorry patinho spelled it righter.
Did you varnish between oil wash and contrast? Gonna try this technique on killteam set tomorrow!
Yea. I just spray a clear lacquer from a spray can. Don’t go too thick or you’ll fill the details. But a light misting just to seal in the ink.

Just a cheap Windsor and Newton cotman series size 3

Yea totally did dude. Maybe it’s a bit thinner than usual. Just trying to find the right consistency for consistent lines.

I read that oil takes a while to cure and if it doesn’t cure fully, paint on top of it/varnish might crack.

Good job
What did you use to thin down the blue ink and how much roughly as a ratio?
Nothing. Ink is fluid enough to go through an airbrush neat

Question on the oil wash. Is it just for the panel lining effect, and if your removing it with white spirit, does it need to be oil based?
It’s oil based cos it flows better and yes it’s just for the panel lines. You can also leave some for weathering too if you like
@@Groundeffected cheers dude. Really appreciate the reply. Love your stuff.

@@Groundeffected thank you very much!

and hey, what brand brushes do you use?
I use Windsor and Newton cotman brushes

You need to thin them or they will come out uneven
You can totally paint them through the air brush without thinning I thin them to make tints but some are a tiny bit thicker than others and they need to be thinned it just depends on the situation and the specific paint.

That hat was bad it went in the bin.
I'm not annoyed at you using white to edge highlight, I am annoyed at how easy you make it look to do lol!
