I laughed when you said 2.5 weeks later and the camera showed a shot of a huge Feijoa tree but then moved down towards the tiny seedling =) Thanks Kalem !
Hello, a friend of my wife at work gave us a bag of Feijoas. Thank you for showing me how to eat them and now how to grow my own from seeds. Thanks again.
Awesome video! thanks so much! watched it, copied it and so far am succeeding and have about 8 little seedlings going, Im in Australia so I managed to find a NZ grown feijoa at the supermarket... ($1.78 each for the tiniest little egg sized ones!!!, soOOo lame!!!) I Miss Feijoas so so much! so yeah, wish me luck... can't keep paying so much to fullfil these cravings haha
I've grown some feijoa plants from seed after watching this video. It's about 3 years in now. No fruit yet but they are looking healthy.. Hopefully next year..
hi. i've heard of guava but never heard of feijoa. it looks like it taste good. i'm going to check if here in puerto rico they sell the plant. love your channel
Do you have any follow up videos of the ones you have planted? I have some feijoa trees but they have died I believe (the sheep got to them). I also found one growing randomly but no fruit yet. Roughly how long till it starts to bear fruit?
cool thanks bro, easy instructions, i only today pulled some seed from the fruit out back and this is exactly what i required....i want to grow everything from seed now.
Thanks so much for this great informative vid, you put a lot of time into it. We have 14 feijioa trees 20 years old in Western Australia. Sadly they are struggling with our drying heating climate and we now have to irrigate them just to keep them alive, but the fruit is so delicious it cheers me up. ( but they are half the size of yours ). I will subscribe to your channel Kiwi.
@Noah Tunnell yes we only lost a few mature trees to drought. We are just picking our first crop off the feijoas we started from seed according to the directions given by the Kiwi grower here, I think they would 7 years old, judging by the age of my comment on here! But they havent had much care.
Thank you so much am a Pilipina living in NSW Australia. Got a tree big one and i don't know whether to cut and prune it. And how to propagate it. Thanking you for giving me idea how to propagate. Will be following you from now on.
It's good to prune them to keep them the size you want and to open up the tree a bit to allow birds to pollinate the flowers. I'll look at doing more videos about propagation of them but cuttings etc in future so stay tuned :)
I got the idea to do this with feijoa seeds after I had success with lemon seeds. It did work for me with the feijoa and I have little seedlings that look like this. They are difficult to transplant tho because they are so tiny. Lol. I wasn't sure if I had planted them at the right time as I just spontaneously took some seeds from a fruit I was eating a few weeks ago in May. I suppose planting time comes right after harvest of the last season? It seems to be working so far. I have the seedlings in the conservatory which seems to act like a glass house.
I've got 5 plants that I grew over the summer here in the UK. They had a bit of a setback with what I suspect were aphids but a dose of insecticide saw them right and they're now all putting good fresh growth out. How worried do I need to be about them now that winter is coming? How frost hardy are they?
I put some seeds in a seeding container which sprouted (hopefully they are feijoa!) and are tiny but it has been 4 weeks, can they take that long esp. in Winter?
Cool, I will not use rooting hormones for now... Yes, they can handle that and you will find those kind of reports on the net. But the last week a woman from France reported that her feijoas sellowianas survived to -17º C. I also read about another people at Spain that reports they survived to snow. :-D Nice. Some of my ones where a bit damaged by the frosts at the nursery's open fields here (-6º C), but a friend told me that the leaves will fall and new ones will appear in spring. Cheers.
I bought a Feijoa's (pineapple guava) bush yesterday for $ 7.50 U.S. it was 1/2 price. It's about 12 inches tall how long do you think it will be before I get fruit. Thanks the next time I plant seeds I think I'll use a Ziploc way, it was like a little green house. One thing I think I learned today is that I need to plant my seeds in looser soil. thanks again.
Thanks... let's try something... I will do a cut of a little branch from the bottom and just plant it in a nice pot in a kind of greenhouse (some place into my house that is warm and a bit sunny... here we are in winter now), and I will report if I am succeful or not. Yes, thanks, the plants looks good; the one with the different leaves was harmed by the forsts in the open field at the nursery, but here they will recover fine. I never tried the fruit!! I will have to wait for 2 years or so! :-S
Great sound and informative video, well done, Question: How do you keep the fruit fly out of your fruit? I sprayed with an organic garlic chilly spray, but I think it may have been too late. Any feed back appreciated.
2012! Oh boy, I hope you're still there. I just, last week, planted the seeds from a pink inside guava. Now I found some old seeds for pineapple guava. Would that be good to plant together for cross pollination? And does your Rosella eat guava? I have 2 males I raised from egg, 12years old.
The pineapple guava (Acca sellowiana), although from the same myrtaceae family as the pink inside guava (Psidium guajava), is not a true guava. These two plants are not closely related and they aren't known to be intercrossable.
Followed your directions with the ziplock method, ours aren’t growing and they keep going mouldy! What are we doing wrong?? South Coast NSW Australia 🇦🇺
Perhaps too much water on the papertowel. Make sure the seeds are nice and clean and that the paper towel is moist, but not too wet. Otherwise, you can grow directly in soil. You just have to be good at keeping them from drying out :). All the best with it!
I grew mine from dry seeds bought on e-bay. First year, I thought I'd been conned because the leaves were tiny and looked nothing like the videos that I'd seen of adult plants. They're now in their second summer and after re-potting in the spring, they now have the full sized leaves. Hopefully there will be flowers next spring.
@@redhatt69 They're doing well, although they're in pots 'cause I'm hoping to organise a house move. I actually ended up with more trees than I need, from a second lot of seed, so I might end up wilding some. The second lot of seed didn't go in the fridge. Instead, they went into a pot, covered in about 2cm of soil and with a rat/mouse proof waited cover, and got left over winter in a shady spot. I removed the cover in the spring, and kept the pot watered over the summer, and come August, I got 80% germination.
That Feijoa seems delicious. I have two different store bought grafted varieties. They give plenty of flowers but no fruit yet. I have a video on my channel on my two feijoa varieties can you give me any tips for fruit set?
HI Kiwi Grower ..Feijoa's are in season and they do sell a high price so I thought I take up your idea of growing me own seeds into trees ...Question ? ...in the 2.5 weeks of germinating the seeds do i open the seal bag and water the seeds occasionaly or do i just leave it sealed on the window cill to soak up the sun ...and thanks for the great vodeo ..well done for sharing your ideas ...Cheers
Hey, I grew my little trees more as an experiment at the time but didn't keep them as I already have a large mature feijoa hedge. Cool to hear that you grew some yourself
wet it with boiled water and germinate somewhere warm enough so they germinate fast enough that mould wont have enough time to form. you could also pasteurise your paper in a steamer and use a steralised glass jar or a fresh ziplock bag.
I laughed when you said 2.5 weeks later and the camera showed a shot of a huge Feijoa tree but then moved down towards the tiny seedling =) Thanks Kalem !
Same hehe
Can you do an update video? Would love to see how these are doing 8 years on :)
Great idea. Would love to see that😮
I bought seeds 2 weeks ago, now they just started. Thanks for the video and the method used

Absolutely what I was after ,couldn't have asked for a more informative video, thank you
Trying my hand at growing feijoas from seed, thank you for sharing your knowledge on how to plant and care for the seedlings Kalem.

That's a huge feijoa! Never had one before, but it looks so tasty. What's it taste like?
white sugar NOOOOO !!!!! Sugar is cancer food ! fresh food is PERFECT why ruin it?
It literally tastes like it's name "Pineapple Guava"
That is great.. I've learnt something today.. I'm going to give this a go. Thanks your videos are great!
Must try this. Thank you. I ate these till I got sick while in NZ a few weeks back lol.

In NZ we don’t have a fruit fly that affects feijoas luckily. So not too sure sorry

Can you grow pecans?
How often do you water them
How long do you guys think it take to go from seed to a 3 foot plant?
Is there a next video ❓ 🙏
Hi. If I wanted a hundred or more, what is best way, cuttings, or seed? Either way cheaper than nursery prices.
Ideally cuttings as you’ll likely get fruit faster and seeds won’t grow true
Cool video. How often did you feed the seeds in ziplock bag and how did you do it? Cheers.
There’s enough nutrients in the seed so no need to feed them in the bag. They just need moisture and warmth to sprout :)
@@TheKiwiGrower so, no need to add water?

@TheKiwiGrower I used small pots but your ziplock method is much better to avoid birds eating the seeds
how much time growing Feijoa from seed requires for bearing first fruits?

Flowers and no fruit would have me thinking they are not self fertile cultivars, older varieties required cross pollination from a different tree.

yay Feijoa's
not sure why there is an apostrophe in feijoas. It is plural.
forgot to tell you: my feijoas are between 35 and 40 inch high (80cm to 1 mt)
Hi 🌷💕🌷
Psst ... Feijoas doesn't have an apostrophe. Unless it's a New Zealand peculiarity.
Hans Proebsting
fejioa is singular
fejioa's is more than one and yes kiwi's were taught that way since the beginning of time.
You're wrong I'm afraid. If they were taught that they were taught it incorrectly.
