I think for a wedding photographer it makes a hell of a lot of sense. but you gotta be in that life fully to justify that price. I can shoot almost 80% of a wedding with a 50mm
@@AndrewVanBeekOttawa Why? Classic wedding set - 24-70mm f/2.8 + 85mm 1.8/1.4. You can also take an ultra-wide lens, depending on your shooting style. But as for me, the 28-70mm f/2 easily replaces the set that I indicated above. It is lighter than the sum of two lenses, and also allows you to not change optics / use only one camera. In the long term, a heavier lens makes the whole kit lighter.
@@EdvardKALENI stopped carrying heavy gear years ago and it makes a huge difference on how you feel after 12 hours. No recovery needed the next day. @@MonicaHolly143 I used to think it was cool to have a 70-200 and a 24-70 hanging off my next all day and if you enjoy it great. I love small, light gear now and actually enjoy not being sore the next day.
I shoot events, weddings and commercial videography and i'm regrettably selling my 35 gm and 24-70 gm ii for this lens as it makes so much sense for my work. Paired with the 16-35mm gm ii to cover the wide end of course.

That's why I went with the Tamron 28-75 For the price, performance, and weight it's perfect. I usually keep my Sigma 85mm 1.4 on my camera, so when I switched that lens for the Tamron, even just the less than 90g weight difference was noticeable.
@@Frus77sh2 My a6700 + Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art weight 1152g and that's uncomfortable already. The a6700's comparably large grip makes it just acceptable, on my a6400 this lens is a no-go...
Expensive and big but that's expected for a F2 zoom. Definitely would be overkill for this weekend Dad shooter with my A6400. Adding in the APS-C 1.5x would make this a no go as a starting range for a zoom.
thatch a nice lens 👍 i have a question not about the lens more about the a7c , have you tried the eye cup from small rig yet ? special for A7C models, i think its a nice ad to the camera
Definitely picking up a 28-70mm f2 GM. As an A1 owner, the updates to A1II are in my opinion all great and valid, but too incremental for me to pull the trigger.
I'd say most people are better off getting the Tamron 28-75 tbh, especially now that it's on sale for 699USD. Get that + a Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art for 799USD then the Tamron 70-180 2.8 G2 for 1199 and you have 24-180mm covered for 100USD less than the 28-70 GM alone
Still way too heavy to work with all day for a wimp like me. In the studio where weight doesn't matter, it's primes for me. Beautiful lens of course, like all GMs! Thanks for another great video.
Seems like a nice lens. However, after owning the Tamron 17-70 for a while now. I must say it defeats the whole purpose of having a compact camera like my a6500. I actually take my camera less often with me because of its size. I’ve decided to switch to the sigma 18-50 only coz of the size.
i still use my 24-105 lol. tbh, i don't even use that focal range much. i tend to use a a6400 w/ a sony 11mm 1.8 and a7iii with a sigma 70-200 2.8. those both cover 90% of my needs. i'll use my 16-35 f/4 or the 24-105 when i can only bring one lens (the former when i'm strictly doing landscapes).
Arthur would you recommend a7c mk1 to buy early next year? As the discounts on this camera in my local shops are too good (less than $1200 body brand new)
Heck of a lens. Only rational for Pro work though. Use it 100 days a year it's only $28 a pop. Plus a bouncer to guard your gear. Did you have to give it back?
I help you summarise who this lens is for: 1. Highly paid wedding and event photographers. 2. The financially rich ones. They can crash their Ferrari with no sweat. What's the price of the new 28-70mm f/2 again?? :) 3. The aimless ones who spend their time surfing the internet, watching reviews and getting sucked in to buy everything latest. (And they are not rich.)
Its funny. When I was a Canon shooter I almost bought the 28-70L f2. The deal fell through and it literally initiated a rabbit hole that made me decide to go with Sony. Now that I am with Sony, had the Sigma 24-70 DGDN ART MKI since 2023 and barely used it. I know that I love primes much better. So even if I could get this lens at a "Steal" for say $2k but not allowed to flip it? I would decline.
Lenses like this are always pushing the envelope of what’s possible. And so I appreciate them always doing this, but I will probably never own it. However, at the same time when this type of thing comes out, it drives out to use market price for other things which I think all photographers appreciate.
You’re the first to mention the possibility of this lens being parfocal-if it had this feature, it would be perfect! Love your content, keep it up! One more question. Is Sony’s autofocus system good enough to make a lens function more like a parfocal lens?
You can get this and the A1ii for the price of a good used Toyota. At the end of the day these things only produce photographs and you can get indistinguishable photos from a set up 10% of the cost. If you need to compete with NFL photographers then the value might be there. For the rest, its a complete waste of money.
@ArthurR not me though, I'll gladly take a 4kg lens. If we're using G Master as a social status symbol, then lens weight should be increased to flex your physical condition
Grams or pounds means nothing to me. Compare it to a honeydew melon, small, medium or large. Does it weigh as much as a half gallon of milk or a whole gallon. Might want to relate weight to a newborn baby. Or will it break our bank or back. In your hand, that lens looks huge. How does it compare to the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art in size? One more thing, where is it made?

They won't invest in it.
@EdvardKALEN Then one day Sigma or Tamron hopefully will...
Theoretically they can, but market value of apsc is not worth investing it

Too big to travel :) Best compact is Sony 16-55 F2.8 for universal sessions.
The chatter I was hearing ( HYPE) was that this new release was going to be a 24-70 f/2 with a "smaller profile." Did anyone else hear the same?
That wider range would have been nice. Id say even something like a 20-50mm F2 would have been sweet.
@ArthurR. As a wedding photographer, a 20 to 50 f2 would be perfect for me
The A7c makes this lens extra large & extra heavy. Sony actually is proud of its weight (close to 2470 GM i ), compared to the Canon 2870 F2.
