A perfect follow up to the artistry of Black Swan is the hard edge of their smash hit Mic Drop (Steve Aoki remix). It has 1.4 billion views and with the two you’ve done it will help showcase their incredible creative versatility and why there needs to be all seven of them. Thanks for jumping down this & the Taylor rabbit holes. Trying to imagine how hard the internet would crash if there was a TSwift/BTS collab.

This is the other-side-of-the-coin piece of their song called Dionysus.

Yes! And ON is related as well, it's the answer to the question Black Swan is asking. Black Swan is rooted in fear of loss, and embracing the shadow as a way through, and in ON they find strength in the shadow to get back up when they fall.
I love these songs so much 😁

Black swan explanation: Martha Graham's Quote
"A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." All BTS songs have their meaning. Try " Blood, Sweat & Tears". So in "Blood Sweat & Tears" is shown the difference between wanting to sin and resisting against sinning. (Check "Demian" by Herman Hesse)

That is one meaning - the meaning of the song on it's own.
But BTS does amazing concept work/concept albums:
To "Love Yourself" you have to "Know Yourself": psychology - the Map of the Soul (Carl Jung)
"Black Swan" is a description/exploration of the shadow/the unconsious mind - what we can't accept about ourself: fears/hate/anger etc. what keeps us up at night and leads to despression/what brings us to our knees when we ignore it too long.
In their case: the fear to loose their passion for their art
"Blood, Sweat & Tears" talks about temptation - but it is about growing up - of merging the world of light and the world of temptation/dark.
(Watch the short films from Begin)
"Demian" is a coming of age novel.
It's a path of individuation independent religious dictate or earthly rulership.
Nietzsche famously said: "God is dead"
The quote above the mirror in the MV is "You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star".
It's very relevant that they leave not through the black or white door.
In childhood you are protected from reality by your parents (or at least they should) but when you become an adult you have to do the daily minuta all by yourself, have to see all the dark sides of the world you were protected from as a child.

The genre is BTS. They have two MVs that are more like small movies than music videos and if you're interested in that then "Blood, Sweat and Tears" is based on "Demian" by Hermann Hesse. And "ON" (Grand Central Station performance on Fallon's Tonight Show) is based on Carl Jung's book "Map Of The Soul". They are both incredible works of art and both very different from "Black Swan".

    • @WonderingWildWanderingRose
      @WonderingWildWanderingRose 7 месяцев назад +9

I think as filmmakers they'd be more interested in the ON official MV (more movie like) than they would be in the Tonight Show performance (particularly as many reactors have troubles with copyright issues the monitors at the Tonight Show enforce) or the ON MV Kinetic Manifesto (though the camera work is awesome).
Tiny clarification: Map of the Soul is a book *about* Carl Jung's psychology theories. I'm sorry I forget the authors name, but he was quite interested in how BTS were using his book as inspiration for their album. He did some videos on it around the time of the album release (Map Of The Soul: Persona, though I didn't follow up to see if he continued with Map Of The Soul:7) that were interesting to watch if you'd like to Google him.

@@WonderingWildWanderingRose Thank you :) I have the book (by Murray Stein). When I first saw BTS they had just come out with MOTS Persona and it pulled me in because I had studied Jung in college. I Love the "ON" MV and I did an analysis video on it a long time ago that hasn't gotten many views but I stand by it ;) I am thinking of redoing it though... my editing programs (and maybe skills?) have improved since then. I thought they might like the grand Central setting as a more musical movie extravaganza performance.. like in the forties and fifties (yeah, I'm old). 🕊💜😇

RM, the leader, spoke about what he went through writing this song. He rewatched the movie Black Swan and said he cried alot during the writing. He also briefly spoke about the other definitions: black swan
    noun
    1. a mainly black swan with white flight feathers which is common in Australia and Tasmania and has been introduced elsewhere.
2, an unpredictable or unforeseen event, typically one with extreme consequences.
    3. something extremely rare. (Oxford)
As many others have said, inspired/influenced by the Martha Graham (Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 - April 1, 1991) was an American modern dancer and choreographer. Her style, the Graham technique, reshaped American dance and is still taught worldwide. Graham danced and taught for over seventy years.)(Wikipedia) quote. Having the fear of losing your love for or ability to create your art, whatever that art may be, also burnout/writer's block, etc. They were dragged under but fortunately came out the other side of this period per Suga's lyrics when he says he will never be dragged away again
    "Slowly, I open my eyes
    여긴 나의 작업실 내 스튜디오
This is my workroom, my studio
    거센 파도 깜깜하게 나를 스쳐도
Even if harsh waves brush against me in the darkness,
절대 끌려가지 않을 거야 다시 또
I will never get dragged away again
    Inside
I saw myself myself" (doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/?s=Black+Swan) Also, I always recommend if you want a deeper understanding of any of the lyrics that you use the above site doolsetbangtan. All of BTS's songs can be found there translated and annotated with pertinant Korean cultural information. Thanks so much! I am really enjoying your reactions!

The songs they have a direct hand in (most of them) always reflect their personal emotions and/or experiences in some form, which makes them relatable to people of different backgrounds even if they don’t know exactly what inspired them. That said, that connection usually deepens and the song(s) “hit harder” once you do and you start to see the “big picture” and how songs/themes interconnect throughout their discography.

Thank you for the reaction to Black Swan! You're right, this was filmed at the beautiful LA Theatre. They do so many different genres of music so I'm glad you want to hear more.
Because you were in the industry, you may enjoy watching their behind-the-scenes videos to see how much attention to detail and set design they put into each MV. They use little CGI normally, but one MV I love is IDOL which has tons of it! They put it out in answer to the false comments from haters that they were using CGI when they weren't. I love the message about loving yourself in the song, too. 💜

Someone below mentioned that some BTS music is based on Carl Jung theories. To go a little deeper on that topic, the Map of the Soul album Series - "Persona" and "7" are based on Jungian psychology - Persona, Shadow, Ego. All of the songs talk about things like who they are in real life versus as an artist/BTS member, their fears, etc. "Black Swan" is on "Map of the Soul: 7" and explores the "shadow" or fear they have of losing their passion (or ability) to be artists/perform. That's a real fear, because the obstacle can come from within (burnout, depression), or it can be forced on them by outside forces, or they could suffer a career-ending injury. They actually shared in their "FESTA" (annual debut anniversary celebration) video in 2022 that they had run out of inspiration as a group and needed the time they were announcing - to do their military service and work on/release solo projects - to grow as individuals. (As an aside, they also said then and have repeated as a group and each individually numerous times, that they WILL be back as a group in 2025, after the last members complete their military service. In 2023, almost all of them talked about being excited to get back together and do concerts together again. They have enjoyed the time on their own, but they're also all committed to the group first.)
Some background and context to this album in particular is that it was released in February 2020. It was meant to be the focus of their biggest world tour - in stadiums around the world - that was scheduled to begin in April and continue into Q4-ish of that year. They had come out of a couple of years of burnout, exhaustion, etc...and they were facing the mandatory military service for their oldest member, Jin, by the end of that year. It was also their 7th year as a team, having debuted in 2013. In K-pop, there is what is known as "the 7 year curse." It comes from the fact that most K-pop contracts last 7 years, and all South Korean men have to do mandatory military service, so it's not uncommon for male groups to have to pause for that and then never really come back. It's pretty rare for them NOT to break out and each go their separate ways. So this song is written in that context as well.
"Map of the Soul: 7" is a deep, absolutely gorgeous album...and it never really got its due. BTS had to scrap the entire tour and pivot, which is how the "English trilogy" came about - them making it up as they went along, hoping they could do the tour after all and then finally having to scrap it. Their album "BE" also came out of the period of time at the height of the pandemic.
I enjoy your reactions, perhaps because I am also "of a certain age." 😜

Shadow- black swan - On -ego 로 이어지는 일련의 노래들은 그 당시의 나를 구원하였답니다. 이 순서의 노래들을 가사를 위주로 리뷰하는 것을 추천합니다.

It was a field I loved so much that I devoted my life to it, but thanks to this song, I was able to endure the dilemma of falling into an endless quagmire, hating myself and fearing the disappearance of existence. The series of songs leading to Shadow-black swan-On-ego saved me at that time. I recommend reviewing the songs in this order, focusing on the lyrics.

Yes, this music video was shot in Los Angeles, at the closed Los Angeles theater.
*The quote from dancer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful."*
The lyrics are introspective and find BTS confessing, as artists, the fear of losing their passion for music.. "Black Swan" details the relationship artists have with their craft, comparing the harrowing feeling of loss of love for the craft to death, with lyrics such as "If this can no longer resonate, no longer make my heart vibrate, then like this may be how I die my first death." Ultimately, they find hope and realize that they can overcome it and move forward, embracing their passion for music again, after self reflection and understanding.
I love this song, it's the one that made me ARMY. 💜

It's about their fear that fear of losing their passion for their art. There art being Song Writing, Composing, Producing, Rapping, Singing and Dancing even just going up on stage. There's a Shadow in this MV and it represents their Fear it's a Psychological term that represents the part of the brain were we hide our deepest darkest thoughts and fears.
The Shadow ends up at the end of the MV falling down into nothing and thus saying they have conquered their fears of losing their passion for their Art.
It's also based on the quote by the famous Dancer Martha Graham "A Dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing and this is the most painful death"

A lot of BTS MV have behind the scenes and you can also find explanation of the lyrics and symbolism. Everything you see in their videos has a meaning. There is a lot of double meanings.
A lot of their songs sound like they’re talking about a romantic relationship but they are usually referring to their fandom (A.R.M.Y.) or the group members. They write a lot of their songs for their fans.
You will also notice the more upbeat the song the more serious or dark the lyrics are.

Hi! I am 57 yr. Old Army and love BTS . I would like to say that the more you listen to the variety of musical prowess in their content, their unique sound and style transcends the " k-pop" idol group cookie cutter image and repetitious mediocre content .. For me they are 7 musical genius artists that happen to be from Korea... You cannot put them in a box for any stereotypical type of musical. They are their own genre . No one sounds like them and vice versa. No one has the deep conceptual content - layer upon layer with words or imagery.. the incorpating of their culture whether through ideaology, mannerisms, dance, and instruments is unmatched.. blending in the english/ western meanings is a perfect recipe for the entire world. Their song "Ddaeng" (pronounced dang) is the ultimate example of the intelligence it takes to produce such living legends.. I really hope you delve deep into the rabbit hole called BTS. You will mot be dissappounted.. Did I mention their stellar characters as humans?? That is for next time! Have a happy discovery!

At some point they thought about separating in 2018 and that was where the company was forced to give them a month of rest. This song was the farewell that they wanted to leave to ARMY. Fortunately for us, they talked among themselves and gave each other strength to move forward. And the company trembled and had to bow down and say ok. BTS is a worthy example to follow

Black Swan was my introduction to BTS. I was drawn in by the artistic nature of this one, and then continued down the BTS path and never looked back. Became ARMY a few months after I found them. Yes, the theater was in LA, but I'm not sure it's still there. The song is about losing your passion for your art, and is based on a film of the same name about a ballet dancer. They say that when you lose your passion or can't perform anymore, that is your first death and that is worse than your final death. Looking back, I think BTS were facing burn out and were afraid they were losing their passion for their art - making music.
You really need to see a LIVE version of this - preferable from their Permission to Dance concert in LA or Las Vegas (late 2021 and April 2022 time frames)! You may be amazed at their Live Vocals while dancing!
Anyway, more songs to react to:
    Fake Love,
ON (there are 2 versions - the MV and then the Kinetic Manifesto Film Come Prima),
Idol and then Idol explained by a Korean (DKDKTV),
Spring Day (and then the explanation by Italian ARMY video too),
    MicDrop (Steve Aoki remix)...
and then there are so many more BTS songs AND solo works from each member. More on that another time.

Annyeong haseyo! Your Korean is great Sam :) The Black Swan MV was filmed at the Los Angeles Theatre. I discovered BTS in the summer of 2017 via their Blood Sweat & Tears MV. My jaw dropped I didn’t know what I was looking at or even where to look there were so many layers. After that I really just wanted to know their names & somehow found myself deep in the rabbit hole. Their 2015 album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 1 ” has a very compelling alternate universe narrative: Check out their I Need U & Dope MV & of course Spring Day MV. Their musical style is incredibly diverse so for comparison check out ON MV. Welcome to BTS! There is so much to discover :)

Thank you so much for all of this. Helps us tremendously as we navigate this huge discography. And thank you for watching to the end! You're the first to comment on Sam trying out his Korean :)

65 year old ARMY....always love seeing new people fall in love with these incredible artists, but I always hate when they start with Dynamite or Butter because they assume those songs represent the soul of BTS. BTS are very deep in their approach to songwriting and have the ability to transcend age or any other demographic and speak to the heart. I adore these seven young men, after having found them in 2019. They remain so humble despite their phenomenal, global success. Thanks for your reaction. Subscribed.

It is shot at the Grand LA Theatre. Based on the famous ballet Swan Lake. In this ballet there is a white/good swan and an evil/black swan and in modern productions both parts are played by the same dancer. Symbolizing the struggle within oneself between light and dark. BTS has a whole series of songs about the shadowself. Starting with Blood, Sweat and Tears based on Hermann Hesse's Daemian and Jungian theories. Also at it's core it is about losing your passion.
I love how they use black and white, light and dark, stillness and movement in this video.

BTS experiment with a lot of different genres....you honestly never know what you're going to get with them, heh. I'd recommend their song Fake Love. It's one of my favorite!

Since you’re into film, you need to know about the BU; the BU is the BTS Universe. There is a connected storyline across several MVs, a webtoon, etc. It starts with the extended MV for I Need U. Not all of their MVs are part of it and ones that are will say so in the description of the MV.

I'm sure the recommendations will seem overwhelming, but the sheer amount of content BTS has produced over 10 years is insane. Given your film background, my suggestion is their song 'On'. There are two music videos which might make for an interesting comparison: the official MV which is narrative style and the Kinetic Manifesto film which is performance based. Same song done 2 very different ways.

Productores necesitan reaccionar a "I need you" así podran ver la excelente actuación de BTS.
