- The "New Silk Road" is an enormous Chinese international development project. It's a trade network that involves Asia, Africa, and Europe -- and more than 70 countries are already involved. It may turn the old world order upside down.
China is investing in bridges, port facilities, railroads, and roads around the world. Beijing is spending several hundred billion euros on what it calls the "Silk Road Economic Belt." Chinese President Xi Jinping says the project will provide development opportunities and wealth for China and the entire world. Beijing will take the lead role in building this infrastructure network.
After the financial crisis in Greece, no European country wanted to invest there -- but China saw an opportunity, and bought shares in the port of Piraeus. By 2016, Beijing owned a majority of shares. The Greek dockworkers' union still finds it hard to accept that the port no longer belongs to Greece.
In 2019, Italy joined the Silk Road project -- and signed a memorandum of understanding with China on development of the port of Trieste. But critics warn that the "Silk Road" project will allow Beijing to spread its influence around the world. Europe is divided between those who favor such cooperation, and those who oppose it.

China saw a ripe plum for the picking. With an economy in pieces, it'd an opportunity to buy low.
China is taking page out of the European's 17th and 18th century playbook. Take over critical ports and trade routes and you dominate world trade. How else did the British Empire do what it did during the industrial revolution despite having a tiny population relative to what they ruled? They dominated major trade routes and regions with critical resources like India, the Dutch East indies and the west indies.
China is doing the same just with a lot more people and a helluva lot more money

There is not only the factor of employment/unemployment in the world. The subject of working conditions and working terms in general are constantly in question, when a big foreign investor uses the working people of an so-debted country. And foreign political power is so weakened, that cannot stop the overexploitment of the natural resources and inhumane working enviroment, because as i said, we are talking about a country that is debted, weak and full of political corruption.

China is actually one of the largest arm exporters in the world too, they're just very low profile about it to fit into the peaceful rise image unlike the West. It just doesn't do regime change overseas, that's the main difference, and an important one, really.

When I visited Italy years ago, store closed in the afternoon. I was told they went back home for lunch and nap. Those are the best hours to boost sales. It may be workers heaven but certainly not good for the economy.

I think they documentaries tend to put on a "every action have an reaction" mood on it.
I like them and don't take them to heart like others because they tend to do. Like they showed the effects of western companies manipulation on companies and companies to acquire rare earth materials for products, have a bad effect on the land and its people. They talked about a lot of subjects.

I'm in Ireland and do business with Chinese people in different ways here. I find Chinese people to be straight forward and honest in their dealings and I like that. Being honest, I find it easier to do business with a Chinese person than Irish person.. As for doing business with China directly, I can't comment on that.

why would it? Poland's interests are naturally very different from Italy or Frances for example. Germany's are very different from that of Greece. There are no fiscal transfers in the EU nor is there an EU national identity.

I thought this was an interesting documentary. I was afraid that it would be too pro- or anti-china, but it finds a nice middle ground. The documentary gives points on both the good and bad of working with China, and I find the viewpoints of the people from these countries quite interesting.

Well to be fair, the countries that US/Europe blow up are poor countries that do not have much if any infrastructure to begin with. They blow up caves and dirt roads...not really much damage. Actually US hasn't gone to war with a rich country since WWII. All the countries have been poor developing countries with no infrastructure.

Actually i 'm Greek and i know a little more on the case. So the container port of Piraeus was in a very bad shape under state ownership, underdeveloped and underfunded, i 'm a professional merchant marine engineer, i have traveled the world and seen many ports, Cargo handling machinery and cranes were old and inadequate for modern large ships, the port was actually controlled by a trade union like Mafia (shown here - they cry because they have to work to earn their wages). The corrupted political parties that dominate the governments for the last 45 years - and which have bankrupted Greece btw, Pasok and Nea Dimokratia have used the dock workers as a political token and tool with illegal appointments of their "clientele". Their work ethic was that of a public servant : do minimal work until the shift is over, they even turned ships away from the port because they didn't like to work! Now the Chinese are no virgin Maries and certainly not fools, but at least they agreed and signed a labor contract with the union (which doesn't represent the majority of workers as far as i know), and there is "peace" in the port. Actually Greece has benefited A Lot from increasing tax revenue from the growth of the port. And the Chinese actually occupy more people now then before...

I guess the fundamental question is, why not? China will not ever invade the EU. China will never rob or loot the EU. When you are talking about human rights, please also consider some middle east countries. I could still remember how Jamal Khashoggi was killed. The statement by the Italian economist in the end is enlightening. China has a new way of doing things which Europe needs to learn from, just like in the 19th centuries, Europe had new ways of doing things that Asia needed to learn from. Japan succeeded in learning from the West faster than China did, and it became a regional power. China decided not to learn from Europe, not only was it defeated in many wars, it was later invaded by Japan. European countries need to be more open about what their countries' strengths and weaknesses are, and start learning from the Asians. Otherwise, history will repeat itself in the 21st century.
The learning will not happen as long as most of us Europeans live in a bubble. We grow up learning almost nothing about Asia and even among those of us speaking multiple languages it is rare to have an Asian one among them.
People do not understand the present because they do not understand history. And for most being trapped in their often monolingual information bubble is not helping with that.

-Why when the port was run by Greek, it was at the edge of bankrupcy, while the same port is managed by Chinese the turnover is tenfold?
-Before Chinese company stepped in the business of the port, why there was no other investment came to help?
