I never realized it had so many fills and variations.
I had thought it was just like 20 seconds looped.

      It’s a 2 bar loop.
"The drums from 'Night Fever' basically consisted of two bars at 30ips," he says. "The tape was over 20 feet long and it was running all around the control room - I gaffered some empty tape-box hubs to the tops of mic stands and ran the tape between the four-track machine and an MCI 24-track deck, using the tape guides from a two-track deck for the tension. Because it was 4/4 time - just hi-hats and straight snare - it sounded steady as a rock, and this was pre-drum machine. For the tempo I used the varispeed on the MCI four-track, so the drums that ended up on the 24-track were at least third-generation, and because the tape heads were so badly worn I brightened the tracks that were already Dolby A-encoded with high-end EQ from the API console."

Bernard Lupe had a hot hand on that track. He was my first drum teacher before Sheila E and Prince came along.

listening on headphones it sounds like they overdubbed the open hi hat, at the end of each bar. it sounds great but wtf?

  • @lukealberti5094

Does anyone know where the ghost note sixteenth notes are coming from? Either a second musician, some kind of delay effect, or they're actually being played by Dennis Bryon, either with his right hand on the hi-hat, possibly his left hand on the hi-hat, or his left hand on the snare drum. To me, it sounds like a second musician playing either a tambourine or a cabasa but it's hard to tell.

After listening to Night Fever, I think it could also be muted strokes on the guitar.

Has anyone realized that “Stayin Alive” is somehow in between 103 and 104 bpm? How is that possible? I know they made a tape loop but can someone explain this?

A truly steady or numerically rounded tempo is a concept that has only taken hold since computer/DAW recording gained prominence. Even if they did record “Night Fever” to a click, which they may not have, Dennis may have been playing ahead of or behind the beat (an ancient concept known as “feel”) or tape speed could have altered the tempo slightly when they created the loop.

Click recording technology exists long before the age of sotware,
The Eagles used it in H.C. 1976,
      Besides - it's a 5 second lopped recording
So the tempo can't go wrong
