Loved the reaction. It's one of my favorite songs ever so I'll just leave here some things that are really hard to get until you listen to it a lot of times: -the "Midas touch" seems a good thing but if you transform a car into gold it loses its utility (in the myth Midas wants to eat and drink after having received the "gift" but it becomes gold and he understands it's a bane) -the "Midas touch" also plays with the fact that she often defined her relationship with Joe using golden metaphors (not only the song "gold rush" but in different songs she said: "I once believed love would be burning red, but it's golden", "Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo", "It’s like your eyes are liquor, it’s like your body is gold", “Deep blue but you painted me golden”) -"don't think we'll say that word again" assumes 4 different meanings if you think of "evergreen", "our", "group" or "friends" -he "booked the night train for a reason" and told his family "for a reason" but she "couldn't give a reason", probably because she's mentally ill -"‘til someone’s on their knees and asks you" means he is literally begging (you kneel on only one knee when proposing) -everyone gets that "One for the money, two for the show" is a reference to Elvis but is often missed that the following line "I wasn't ready so I watch you go" also is ("Three to get ready, and four to go" in the Elvis' song "Blue Suede shoes") Sorry for the long comment 😅
Don't apologize, this was so worth the read! This is probably my favorite song in the album and somehow you made me like it even more. Thanks a lot for sharing!
The harmonies after verse 2, just before the bridge, remind me of 10 CC's “I'm Not in Love.” Much easier to record with digital technology today than analog tape loops they had to use back in the 1960s. Great song with beautiful lyrics. An entire story in a handful of well crafted lines.
She cried performing this song on tour, because her and Joe wrote it together. There are so many ‘fictional’ songs she wrote, where life is now imitating art
Yes William Bowery is Joe. It was a pseudonym for when the album came out so all the attention would be on the song and not "omg joe and taylor wrote a song together". Then Taylor revealed that Joe was William in the Long Pond sessions.
Something I love about this song is the double meaning of the title - “champagne problems” is usually used to describe 1st world problems, or something that only people with money would have to deal with. However, the family bought all this champagne to celebrate an engagement that now isn’t happening, so they literally have a champagne problem.
@@issofsari believe the meaning of champagne problems is basically a first world problem. It’s not the end of the world, but definitely an issue that needs to be dealt with. I also agree with another poster that it has a double meaning.
The moment you said you're not gonna pause anymore i laughed. I knew that bridge was coming and no new listener can just sit through the most powerful bridge in music history without taking a breath HAHA. I have never been engaged but i listen this song JUST for the feelings it makes me feel. This song is suchhhh a masterpiece. ❤❤
i love this song so much 💔 and the bridge gets me every time 💔 “sometimes you just don’t know the answer til someone’s on their knees and asks you” this also one of the songs that taylor was excited to hear fans screaming its lyrics, you have to watch her reaction in the tour 🥺
Such a heartfelt reaction. I agree that this is some of her most poignant writing. When it was released she said in an interview that she couldn't wait to play it in a stadium with thousands of fans screaming the bridge back to her, and that's exactly what she's been doing on tour. It is painful to know she and Joe wrote this excruciatingly sad song together and now life has imitated their art. He chose the pseudonym William Bowery after his great-grandfather, William Alwyn, who was a composer, and the Bowery Hotel in NYC where he spent a lot of time when he and Taylor were getting to know each other. It made me chuckle how you are encouraging us to go out and buy tickets to Taylor's tour, as if all 52 shows aren't sold out unless we want to pay $1k to scalpers. I'd love to get my hands on some tickets, but at this point I'd need the Midas touch to make that happen. 😅
All 52 are stadiums, yet it didn't take many total hours to sell every ticket to Verified Fans and Capital One cardholders, and the general public never got a chance to purchase tickets. 🤯 International fans are restless for their leg of the tour to be announced and find out which countries she'll tour. 😅 And I'm sure some American Swifties are getting their passports ready.
Just wanted to comment and say I actually love the way you pause so much to share your interpretations. ❤️ You always have something so insightful to contribute.
Mama, you are such an incredible ray of sunshine. Thank you SO much for your support. Taylor always delivers, but this song got me quite a bit. She did a wonderful job in painting a story of heartbreak.
Great reaction, Nick! That was an absolutely beautiful song. Beautiful but Oh so sad at the same time. It seems I have to take a closer look at Taylor's catalogue 🙂 Love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
This song is so beyond beautiful and heartbreaking. The way my mind conjured a whole movie as I heard it the first time, and it plays on loop every time I listen to it. She has an innate and unique ability to take you to the place she’s created and make you feel what the characters feel is unlike any other artist. I’m an album girlie but this song is definitely a standout from the standout masterpiece that is Evermore!!!!
Yes William Bowery is Joe and this song made me cry because sometimes you can have the right person, the perfect person even but if you’re not happy with yourself then it will never feel right till you love yourself enough to believe you deserve it. A masterpiece of lyrics
Champagne problems is an idiom which means insignificant issues in mostly rich people's lives, like the hotel running out of pool towels. Aka first world problems
I’ve been loving your Taylor swift reaction videos and can’t wait to watch this one as well! As a newer swiftie who only really delved into her entire discography about 2 years ago, I can really appreciate how amazing the journey is.
Yesss, that’s why it doesn’t bother me at all when he pauses. He is so well spoken and intellectually thinks through the lyrics so that he processes them in front of us. I love it, it’s like having a good conversation with a friend who understands your special interest.
William Bowery IS Joe. They wrote folklore and evermore albums together in quarantine period just for fun because they had nothing better to do. They didn't even plan to release these at first. They both liked sad and melancholic type of songs and went ahead and wrote some together. Taylor thought these songs were too good to not release and Joe agreed. He never wanted to take the credit for her songs and that's why he used the name William Bowery. But Taylor mentioned in an interview that Joe is William Bowery. Now Joe is a Grammy winner. It all started with the song called 'Exile'.
I'd like to share this trick if you'll ever read this. I noticed from the past videos that this happens when you want to go back and reread the lyrics. You can press the "" keys on the keyboard to go back and forth by frame instead of the arrow keys that takes 5 seconds :D
I think the line "she'll patch up the tapestry that I shred" is underrated. It would have been more expected to say that she shredded his heart, hurting him and destroying his love for her. Instead, she picks a tapestry. What does a tapestry do? It shows a scene. So instead of referencing his feelings, she's talking about this perfect picture of the future that he'd painted in his mind. And maybe that's why she said no; because she sensed he cared more about his picture-perfect image than about their love. That's a lot to convey in 8 words.
I love champagne problems with all my heart, it’s in my top three taylor songs of all time❤ I think you should listen to the song Lover next, it’s such an unbelievably beautiful love song❤
I loved your reaction to this, it really is such a beautiful (and also heartbreaking) song. So yes, William Bowery IS Joe Alwyn, he went by a pen name during the writing process. William was Joe's great grandfather that he never met (he was a composer) and Bowery comes from the area in New York that Joe spent a lot of time in. So that's how he put the name together!
I don’t know how many times I’ve said this, but in my opinion (which doesn’t really mean much 😂) Taylor is one of the greatest, most clever, and incredibly unique lyricists in history. This song hit WAAAAY too close to home & I bawled when I first heard it! After I recovered, (😂) I listened to it umm, more times than I’m willing to admit! I always do with Taylor’s songs because every time you listen, you understand the cleverness of her song writing. I love an artist who makes you have to REALLY listen to a song to figure out all the double ways you could interpret the lyrics, or the hidden metaphors/meanings in song. My friend said “I just don’t get the Champagne Problems as a title” - I said “Watch her lyric video; you literally see how the ring dives straight into the champagne, and at first the champagne its full of bubbles, but then the bubbles slowly all disperse… Exchange the words “champagne” & “bubbles” for “relationship” & “love” and you’ll understand the metaphors”. Plus the lyrics about buying champagne but then no one applauds like they usually do, which is the problem. I love the Elvis “Blue Suede Shoes” line, that she changed to her “not being ready to go, go, go”. Also love how she felt guilt about leaving him crestfallen & broken, then sad because everyone will say “you’ll find someone who won’t do that, will patch up the mess she made of your heart & she’s ‘f**ked in the head’ anyway” - it’s SO rRELATABLE… Someone always cops the blame, even when they’re not at fault; in this case, she just wasn’t ready which she unfortunately only realised when he actually proposed. I can’t fault this song, just as I can’t fault your reaction, as always! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 It’s ironic how she’s now singing about what seems to be a reverse situation in “You’re losing me” 😢 I don’t keep up with all the rumours about her & Joe, but it really seems like he broke her heart. I feel for both of them, but especially her considering she has to sing songs she wrote with AND about him live on tour… Heartbreaks are hard enough to handle in private - I wouldn’t want to be famous for even a minute! Lucky she’s strong, has a backbone & is hopefully receiving plenty of help for her mental health throughout this healing journey ❤️🩹
Geeezzz sorry for the novel! 🤦🏼♀️ Although I usually leave long comments, so you’re probably used to it! 🤭 I’m going to blame it on “it’s an Aussie thing” 😂🇦🇺
The narrator has psychological issues and that’s why they say she’s f in the head. Champagne problems are seen as not so serious problems. That’s why his hometown skeptics call her problems a champagne problem. She says that her lover touches the chevy door, which is an average car and it turns into gold; november is cold but his flannel cures/warms her. So she also sees that he did everything right. But she still decided to end the relationship. This is truly a beautiful song and I love it. Folklore and evermore are just perfect. It’s like a series playing in your mind.

@@nickforell1 welp... never knew that metaphor either... This has played on my phone thousands of times, and I took it litterally as in she had a drinking problem 🤷♀️😅 now that makes more sense 😂
@@nickforell1 It's based on when rich people complain that they've bought the wrong champagne. It's a problem but not a very serious. It's another way of saying first world problems. Taylor expressing that she doesn't want to be in a relationship is a champagne problem compared to the guy who is proposing because his feelings are deemed more important. He's the one that is going to suffer this incredible heartache and humiliation. Taylor is just leaving. How she feels is a "champagne problem".

its not just that Midas turns everything to gold, its that Midas turns everything to gold and has to face the negative consequences! “Your Midas touch on the Chevy door… ‘this dorm was once a mad house,’ i made a joke ‘well it’s made for me’” On the surface these situations seem ideal- turning things to gold, joking around about dorm living- but then you realize that Midas suffered because of this power, and the narrator is actually being perceived negatively as “mad” (crazy). i think its supposed to be ironic! i love lyric analysis :)
Had a new thought based on your “perfect man.. Midas” comment - Midas, thought blessed with gold-touch, ended up alone and embittered bc he smothered everything he touched with his “blessing.” The woman felt smothered by this man who to all outside observers was “perfect.” And so she’s the one who’s “ducked in the head,” and gets the bad reputation, when really she was just saving herself.
"go get tickets for her tour, i think it's still going" WE'RE FREAKING TRYING NICK-- Context: her tour received massive attention due to Ticketmaster problem in handling the tickets, fans getting kicked out of the line multiple times after hours of waiting, scalpers took over the sales, Ticketmaster trying to put the blame on Taylor for being "too famous", and Taylor speaking out about the issue but unfortunately nothing much could be done since Ticketmaster monopolized the business and they already signed a contract. Her tour not only got sold out despite the scalpers and overpricing, but a lot of fans also camp outside the stadiums for free show because they play the performance live on a large screen right outside the stadium too.
Can you please react to Ghostin by Ariana Grande? The background on that song is that she was in a 2 year relationship with Mac Miller but his addictions were unfortunately too unhealthy for her to be around, so she had to end it with him and immediately started dating Pete Davidson. Within a few weeks, Pete proposed to her and she said yes, which took a toll on Mac Miller. Mac Miller ended up overdosing and passing away, which completely shattered Ariana. The song is technically singing to Pete, saying that she understands how hard it was for him to watch her mourn over her ex-boyfriend.
Hi Casey, that sounds so tragic. I do know Mac so I'd be happy to cover it. Would you mind putting the version you want in my discord channel? I have a section for requests so they don't get lost

-the "Midas touch" seems a good thing but if you transform a car into gold it loses its utility (in the myth Midas wants to eat and drink after having received the "gift" but it becomes gold and he understands it's a bane)
-the "Midas touch" also plays with the fact that she often defined her relationship with Joe using golden metaphors (not only the song "gold rush" but in different songs she said: "I once believed love would be burning red, but it's golden", "Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo", "It’s like your eyes are liquor, it’s like your body is gold", “Deep blue but you painted me golden”)
-"don't think we'll say that word again" assumes 4 different meanings if you think of "evergreen", "our", "group" or "friends"
-he "booked the night train for a reason" and told his family "for a reason" but she "couldn't give a reason", probably because she's mentally ill
-"‘til someone’s on their knees and asks you" means he is literally begging (you kneel on only one knee when proposing)
-everyone gets that "One for the money, two for the show" is a reference to Elvis but is often missed that the following line "I wasn't ready so I watch you go" also is ("Three to get ready, and four to go" in the Elvis' song "Blue Suede shoes")

Thank you what a breakdown. I liked your take on Midas dealing with attacks because of his mental health (perception)
Yes, William Bowery is Joe
Had a new thought based on your “perfect man.. Midas” comment - Midas, thought blessed with gold-touch, ended up alone and embittered bc he smothered everything he touched with his “blessing.” The woman felt smothered by this man who to all outside observers was “perfect.” And so she’s the one who’s “ducked in the head,” and gets the bad reputation, when really she was just saving herself.
Right, exactly. She may have been feeling weighed down and crushed by his so called perfection (at least to the outside world).
Yes William Bowery is Joe.
Yes…Joe is!!!
Joe was credited as William Bowery on the albums, his participation was a secret when Folklore dropped. (I remain in denial that they've split. 😭)
That makes much more sense now. I know it seems like they were a nice fit 😞
I'm not in denial they spilt , but I'm in full conspiracy mode Matty is Taylor peacocking to make Joe jealous
The fact that she says "someone's on their KNEES", plural, as if he was begging her instead of just proposing, is so so so sad.
Oh god yes, the imagery is sad =(
yes, joe is william bowery :)
"go get tickets for her tour, i think it's still going" WE'RE FREAKING TRYING NICK--
Context: her tour received massive attention due to Ticketmaster problem in handling the tickets, fans getting kicked out of the line multiple times after hours of waiting, scalpers took over the sales, Ticketmaster trying to put the blame on Taylor for being "too famous", and Taylor speaking out about the issue but unfortunately nothing much could be done since Ticketmaster monopolized the business and they already signed a contract.
Her tour not only got sold out despite the scalpers and overpricing, but a lot of fans also camp outside the stadiums for free show because they play the performance live on a large screen right outside the stadium too.
Sorry Ed I didn’t mean to rub salt in the wound
I’m still hoping for Indianapolis!!!
this song was actually about tom hiddleston and how he proposed to her and she said no
Never heard that before.
NICK PLEASE DO LAST KISS I’M BEGGING YOU 😭😭
Okay Kayte! You don’t have to beg, I oblige but am pretty slow.
Appreciated either way :)
We want reaction Jung kook Dreamers please 😢
Great suggestion, I will get to it soon!
STOP PAUSING HER BRIDGES!!! Lol

💀💀💀💀 thank you! You’re doing the lords work. Pausing during the best bridge of all bridges!!
NOBODY CAN ROLL WITH TAYLOR, SAID THE GOOD LORD.
