25:54 Those low reeds 😍
This is beyond ridiculous. Bravo John Mackey and Bravo UNT.
That snare drummer in the beginning is flippin' awesome!
Thanks. :)
I’ve always wanted to see this piece live and of course they played it the semester before I went to UNT!
As always Professor Corporan is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Y'all are always top notch! I really enjoyed this performance!
I think the trombones might have killed some people that night.
A nuclear bomb was detonated onstage. Holy smoke. All I can say is a combination of eschatology and scatology.
We rocked this work.......
28:32 - No turning back.
I was told that the percussion rhythm at 7:55 is morse code for SOS. Very interesting.
not really, vaguely feels like it is it, but isnt precise enough to discern it being intentional. probably either an accidental resemblance or it was used as a starting point and altered heavily
The percussion section has so many intricate parts!
The mic clips at the end, the way it’s supposed to at that marking
Absolutely beautiful! My favorite part is 18:15. Must have sounded amazing in that hall!
More amazing while sitting on stage.
How perfect is the harp for Calypso's weaving? It's like she's plucking the loom!
Wow. Just wow.
This has a bass sax part? I would have loved to "slap a da bass" on this when I played it.
Probably contra-bass clarinet because the Bass sax is also in Bb
Contrabass clarinet and contrabassoon; no bass sax in the score.
Played parts of huburis for marching band. Twas a jam!
this is amazing!!!!!!!
the girl in the middle playin the alto sax is bomb
29:09 the low reed of it all 🥴🥳
I literally 😩😩 at 25:54
bass clarinet player here and me too
That RATTLE is Crazy
I think the Lone Star Wind Orchestra performance on this is the cleanest and most musical of all three.
The percussion parts sound really dry and not resonant.
It's probably the performance space. Winspear Hall is pretty dry and cuts a lot of higher frequencies so, that may be it.
That is one bombastic son-of-a-bitch. No offense intended. The band is superlative.
The opening horn declaration sounds weak for six players. Where’s the edge?
18:41
The third movement is like Lightning Field.
Actually, Lightning Field comes from this third movement. It was essentially simplified for high schools to be able to play. All three movements have their own simplification for high school players to enjoy!
And second has bits of Frozen Cathedral
Is that a bass sax at 0:18?

who played it better? UT or UNT?
I like the speed UT played the third movement (faster). Both are great in my opinion.
I personally like UNT's version better. Junkin tends to rush sections needlessly and I'm not the only person who thinks this. The bridge section in the 1st movement was rushed so fast by Junkin that I felt the part lost it's groove. He's not a bad conductor as he does extremely well on Lincolnshire Posy and other pieces, but there are instances where he just takes things way too fast.
Jayden Bernal in my view, Junkin or the UT wind band adds expression to what Mackey intels in his music, which at times can be pretty cool and the UT band knows how to show Mackey off with his master pieces.
I think the UT Wind Ensemble brought out the most important parts and brought the third movement to its full potential. Not saying UNT played it inadequately, but I think this recording seemed to neglect the most powerful parts and played with less expression.
UT for sure. Corporon is just really conservative with tempo and expression and ESPECIALLY in Mackey, you can’t be that conservative. Mackey demands that you go all out.
All y'all clarinet players need pad cleaners so you don't have to blow the spit out
In my 50 years of clarinet playing, I have found that there is no sure way to prevent the water (condensation, not spit) from collecting under certain pads. The clarinet section in band is playing all the time, compared to the other woodwinds, putting a lot of air through the horn, so we naturally get more water in our tone holes. You can use pad paper to absorb a lot of the water, especially immediately under the pad, but there's also water in the tone hole, and you have to blow it out, too, or you will get the lovely 'warble' during a nice solo!
Congratulations to Mr. Mackey for getting so much success by writing so ugly music!
and you've written what again???
Say that again...
@@obinnanwakwue5735 I put this guy right up there with the high schoolers who get on pages like the US Marine Corps Band’s page and say their band is better than the Marines. 😳🤦♂️
@@brianjungen4059 bruhhhhh
Check it out. It actually happens. I enjoyed giving the guy who said Col. Dietrich at the West Point Band didn’t know how to conduct the National Anthem a really hard time. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
