  • Solo Piano performance with link to analysis of the reharmonization of the popular song: 'Here's That Rainy Day", by James Van Heusen and Johnny Burke. Discusses 3 rules of reharmonization: 1. Use of II-V-I progression. 2. Tritone Substitutes, 3. Diminished Chord approaches. Also features the use of descending and ascending bass lines and how to harmonize. The lead sheets for this song with the reharmonization can be downloaded on my website for free. www.kenthewitt....

Kent every time you upload a song I think 'Oh my that's my most favorite song!" Now I'm beginning to realise that just about every song you play is truly my most favorite song as played by you. I learnt this one for voice lessons and it has a challenging range.....the lyrics of course are just outstanding!

    Wow. This is fantastic.
From my point as a beginner, My Foolish Heart was the first tune you taught me through you're on-line tutorials. I still play it almost every day and I love it.
That and a couple more tunes I've learned over the past 18 months have given me enough foundation to go after this piece Here's that Rainy Day (lovely on a piano I think...)
Thank you Kent for your kindness in sharing (and explaining) technique, style, and mechanics of the songs.

Another gem Kent...thanks so much for this beautifully lyrical performance. Would love to hear you play "Emily" and "Gary's Theme" at some stage in your busy schedule. Thanks for starting my weekend off on a high note:)

Great comment, Colm, much appreciated. We've been traveling and now it's taxes, so not much time for videos. So I'm posting some vids from a while back...just the performance part w/ links to the tutorials. It's easy to miss some of the earlier vids, particularly for new subscribers. Bill Evans has a great version of Emily, have you heard it?...hard to top that. Gary's theme is another beauty that Bill recorded. You have seen my Bill's Evans videos? He changed my life and confirmed it, otherwise, I would not be writing to you now. Somehow he was able to capture the essence of the beauty of life and express it through the piano...what a great gift! (It's kind of like: if I was stranded on the deserted island bit...and all I had was a Bill Evan's record...I'd be content.) Thanks for the support and I'd love to hear your story. kenthewitt@hotmail.com ruclips.net/p/PLFuMibnl_h5ZNh3QHMhPJ5COU7lswpwYa

Thanks, Kent, much appreciated. I'm a relatively new subscriber and hearing you play is pure joy.
Yes, I had Bill Evans in mind when I mentioned "Emily" and "Gary's Theme". I meant to include "We Will Meet Again (For Harry)"...but he had so many amazing tunes hadn't he?
I'm playing "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "You Must Believe in Spring" on an infinite loop at the moment. I agree, his music gets to the core of human emotion, stirring up memories. His playing has a hypnotic quality that never seems to get old.
He reminds me of one of my favourite writers John Steinbeck. Both had an uncanny ability to capture a sense of nature, bringing you to a particular season, time and place.
Finally, thanks for sharing your wonderful Bill Evans playlist. Your playing is stunning as always. It's not just a pleasure to listen to but as a novice, it also gives me a greater appreciation of this wonderful music.
Please keep doing what you do, it's inspiring and much appreciated...!

It's hard for me to listen to any harmonization of Rainy Day without hearing the 1972 Oscar Peterson Trio and Singer's Unlimited's (i.e. vocal arrangement by Gene Puerling) recording. You are I'd guess familiar with that In Tune album recorded in Germany.

I can not get the link to go to your page.
This tune with its variant chords reminds me of "Laura" the song.
Once 50 years ago played by ear, as much as I could, and now I found a lead sheet, but it seems that many musicians have a special idea of how to use chord-names/cifers. In a recent video you showed different ways to do a seres of "same chord" - which a pianist can do if other do not rely on his way. I simply consider the sheet I found wrong and it does not compare to what Nelson Riddle did with Ella Fitzgerald as singer. I think that song is very good, and deserves revival, however it is apparently too difficult for many jazz-players (at least those on RUclips) Charlie Parker excepted :) Do you have an opinion on the song?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  7 лет назад +1

Try this link to the lead sheet: storage.googleapis.com/wzukusers/user-26455100/documents/585d7c4a3eb44MQzgCdg/Here's%20That%20Rainy%20Day.pdf The lead sheet shows the original fake book changes (chords) and then the reharmonization that I used and explained in the video. It's my version...not Nelson Riddle's. If it were Bill Evan's version it would be different...that's how it goes.
