Fixing sunroof drain on a 2010 Volvo XC60

  • The floor boards, front and rear, would get wet when it rained. There's a simple test to see if your sunroof drain is leaking inside the car or not. Just fill up a water bottle and weigh it and a water receptacle. After the experiment, the total weight should be the same within a couple of grams. The Volvo sunroof has two drains. In my case, the left drain was fine, but the right drain was not connected causing most of the water to drain inside the car. I believe this is the reason why the floor boards were getting wet plus I would hear a water sloshing sound when suddenly accelerating or slowing down. Probably a design or manufacturing flaw on Volvo's part. But hey, when served lemons, make lemonade! Hope this helps.

Thanks for this video. My daughters 2010 XC60 had very wet carpets in the rear passenger side of the car. I thought maybe clogged drains. After watching your video I diagnosed it to be the same issue, the hose was disconnected before it went through the bulkhead and was just draining into the front footwell and running towards the back. My daughter then confessed she recently heard a sound like sloshing/running water when she drove (around the B-pillar). Now it all made sense. I pumped out 6 quarts of water and captured another 2 quarts over 2 days running a fan and dehumidifier in the car.

I'm checking out our XC60 tomorrow, this is likely exactly what i've got going on. Only that i've been letting it go for a while longer than i should have.

How did you reached The other hose under The windshield?

This was incredibly helpful. Thank you. I've got a 2012 xc60 that has this issue, but the drain pipe appears to be disconnected at the top joint under the roofline. When I pour water slowly, it all makes it thru, but a fast pour dumps half of the water out into cabin. I've got the A pillar removed and it's pouring out by the side air curtain. Any ideas how to access the top joint of the pipe?

Hi Evan, I appear to have the same issue as you. I can hear the water drain down, but then too much water and it comes out the top by the headliner down the side pillar. What was your next step? Is your issue resolved?

@@nickpiglowski Sorry for the late reply, Nick. I ended up removing part of the ceiling trim by unscrewing the bolts around the "oh-shi" handle and the fold down sun screens. That gave me enough visibility up there to inspect the drain pipe where it connects to the moonroof drain joint. It was intact up there and connected, so I ended up discovering that there is a secondary channel that runs parallel to the moonroof drain channel up on top of the vehicle. This secondary channel isn't really a channel and isn't designed to accept water and is therefore riddled with holes that go straight down to the interior cabin ceiling. This is where the water was getting in when pouring a lot of water into the proper drain channel--it was spilling over into this unprotected space that's closest to the moonroof line. It looked like some water had been getting in there, but minimal. I caulked whatever gaps I could find there in hopes that would solve the problem. A few weeks later and the problem is less prevalent, but still persists. I think what's actually happening is some water seeps through the joint between the moonroof glass and roof line and misses the channel, travels along the steel frame of the ceiling and makes its way down my interior windshield (the main area for my problem.) Everything is frozen now as it's been -15 degrees F for the past week where I live, so I'll have to wait until spring to reevaluate things.
God bless you, hope you can figure it out.

Hey. I have The same problem. How to reach The other hose under The windshield so i can connect them? Should i remove The dashboard to reach it? Or is it another way?

Hi there! Did you have to remove the A pillar? If so is the screw to remove it under the airbag badge? How did you reconnect it?

You have to remove the pillar trim. Yes, you do this by removing the screw you mentioned. After, be very careful removing the trim. It needs to be sort of pulled and slid off. I think there might be a RUclips video on it.

Jason Oakley Thanks for your quick response! I got the badge off right now. What size bolt is that under the badge?

George Julias 10 mm I think.

@@jasonoakley6608 Alright, so I got the trim off, and I found the drain pipe. So I think that the issue is it is not connected to the rubber grommet. So to make sure there wasn't a clog in the pipe I took it out of that little shelter, and grabbed a container. I put the pipe in the container and all of the water poured into it. So I didn't take off the engine cover thingy. Is there any way I can re-connect it by feeling my way through, at the base of the A pillar?

George JuliasYou are absolutely on the right track. Get one hand below the dash, feel around, and then push the tube back in to the rubber drain.

Same problem here ... and I've only seen on one other occasion the same color and interior as mine. Anyway, does yours have the side curtain airbags inside the side pillar?

    • @jasonoakley6608
      @jasonoakley6608  5 лет назад +1

Tharin 4Prez Yes it does. I was careful to not mess with the curtain airbag.

@@jasonoakley6608 I just finished cleaning out mine. A big S. Florida rain last week left me with approx 4" of water on my floor and now it seems my passenger side airbag module under the seat may have shorted out. If it isn't one thing, it's another. But I still love my volvos.

Tharin 4Prez Yikes! Sorry to hear that. I assume you got a trouble code. I wonder if you’re able to dry everything out if that will make the code go away.

@@jasonoakley6608 when i finally get it all dried out, ill hook it up to see if I can get it coded. Trying now while things are still a tad moist may give a false reading. It could take several more days before I can park it in the sun, its supposed to rain the rest of the week down here.
      Thanks!
