From here until the end of the season is my favorite run of tv…ever
Dui que si coyo!
the pace of these episodes is ridiculous. This is where you wanted to be binging to get the full effect.
It feels like a new season because it's the start of a new book
Also for all intents and purposes, you can think of this as a new "season" because this is the start of Book 3. They didn't follow a seasonal formula for the first few seasons so it's easier to think of them less as TV seasons and more as books. Book 1 was of course episodes 1x1 to 2x5, Book 2 was 2x6 to 3x6, and Book 3 is 3x7 to 3x13. Starting next season (4) it will switch to the standard 1 book=1 season format.
Belters have a concept of “one ship” meaning not just the people but ships are part of the community since they’re so critical to survival. Anything that threatens the one ship threatens everyone and is killed
Of note; the actor playing the supervisor that Melba kills also plays the janitor in the 80s movie "The Breakfast Club" 😲
The primary conflict aboard the Behemoth is that of Belter utilitarian ethics, represented by Drummer, versus Rule of Law ethics, represented by Ashford.
The next cliffhangers are going to be crazy, so be patient plz (3 to 5 episodes per week would be nice though 😀).
The Caliban hybrids have actually displayed much greater physical ability than Melba has in this episode. Remember one of them literally tore through an airlock with it's bare hands on Ganymede. Also note that Melba had to activate something before she attacked and lost consciousness after only a few moments.
When I first saw his episoded I LOVED how they actually made lang-belta verisons of the songs Maneo plays in his ship! Actually I love his character in general.
The Caliban hybrids only exist because of human meddling. Left to it's own programming, the protomolecule created the Ring, so it's safe to assume that was it's primary purpose.
26:13 Black Sails is aammaazzinnggg such an underrated show
Absolutely! And you know he'd love it!
Glad to see you react to my favorite episode of the series! I can't explain why because as you said it is a set-up episode, but when I think about the Expanse, this is the episode I think of. I guess it is a combination of 1. The reveal of what the protomolecule 'Work' end up being. 2. The whole Maneo subplot (I love the Belter version of "Highway Star" and "All By Myself" featured here) 3. Re-appearance of Miller. Looking forward to more episodes!
25:48 OPA stands for "Outter Planets Aliance."
The Belter version of Highway Star rocks.
The introduction of ashford
Possibly my favorite character in the series
What an amazing character
David Strathairn's performance was a master class.
@@starcraftre He really showed up to work on this one. What a role !
Watching The Expanse and Fringe at the same time, damn this man is lucky.
Two series I regard as my top sci-fi, I don't think I could have handled first watching them both together.
The start and end of this episode could well be my favourite shift into the plot of a new book out of anything I've seen! WTF is the only possible reaction!
This is where "The Expanse" really starts kicking into high gear. Hang on for the burn...
You are Right. This Episode is the Beginning of Book 3. Book 1 goes to mid of Season 2. Book 2 to Episode 6 of Season 3. Book 4 is Season 4. Book 5 Season 5 and Book 6 Sesaon 6.
I agree with you about the episode numbering. If you didn't know this was midseason, you'd swear it was a season opener (which of course it basically is, because of how they adapted the books). And equally, because of how much happens from now til the end of the season, it'd be even more surprising if you didn't know how many episodes were left. It's kinda bonkers how they went from taking 2.5 seasons to do 2 books, and then fitting book 3 into half a season. A great adaptation.
Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the remaining episodes. There are some jaw dropping moments ahead.
that sigh at the end :). "aaah shit they got me hooked again."
It reaches out.
UUUU Delta-V one of the best scenes of the series in this one. You know which one it is :D
Considering how often they replayed that scene, over and over... you are talking about Errinwright's "I gave that order!" video, right?
@@mmattson8947 "Time is short and I'll be brief" 😃
@@scope40k Martian Defense Minister Korshunov suffered a fatal heart attack earlier this evening.
@@gemsdirtykitchen3658 at the same time, the MCRN Karakum, dispatched by Korshunov to take control of the Protomolecule, was destroyed over Ganymede.
You guys are the best 🤣
Great reaction Neil!
Welcome to book three!
It's a crazy start and it just keeps ramping up from here!
Looking forward to the next one!
I thought about commenting what Delta-V meant, but I knew in my heart you already would have explained it in the video
Damn, we forgot to warn him about skipping the opening credits.
Lots of people have for at least 4 episodes or so now, that I saw. Unfortunately, I think he's probably always 4-6 episodes ahead because people have corrected him about a few misunderstandings now that's he's gone with for 3 or 4 eps at a time. Good thing is it stops being spoiled in the short term, but also it's hard to warn him or correct him about things apparently before he gets too far, lol.
This season is so good
Ashford is my favourite character... well Ashford or Drummer. Them together is a classic episode
The name of the third book is Abaddon's Gate.
You have figure out Caliban, so I trust you you know who Abaddon is. ;)
But if you don't know, some of the meanings might be: a name for a devil, angel of the Abyss, destruction, bottomless pit or a grave. ;)
Indeed, it is a good story, and all questions will be answered, it will take a while , but that's the entertainment .
I've never heard the hybrids being called a Caliban. It was Project Caliban, but even in the books they aren't called that. You are free to call them what you want, but FYI.
As far as I can tell, the OPA are somewhat Anarchist. They don't have a central government, and form loose syndicates of shipmates and crews. This is why Anderson Dawes accused Fred Johnson of still being an Inner when he suggested the Belt could use the missiles to make themselves into a power like Earth and Mars - the Brlters don't want that.
The OPA is made up of factions who have no authority over each other, and form loose alliances, in this case several factions are choosing to work together on the Behemoth.
That's my understanding.
Oh, right, ummm... Neil, there are possible spoilers in the opening credits, skip them! I think due to your holiday, you may have watched this episode before any of us could get around to telling you this info. Oops.
By definition, if it's part of the original broadcast, it cannot be a spoiler. There's a major difference between some jackass revealing a plot point too soon and just announcing that a certain actor is going to be onscreen. For all we knew, it could just as well have been a flashback scene with Miller in it. The producers decide what is shown onscreen, and the actors name was shown. Period.
We tend to get all excited by these revelations to the point where letting reactors see the show the same way we did somehow isn't enough anymore, it's gotta be hyper-blind! Bullshit! Just relax and enjoy the ride -- nobody asked us to drive the tour bus! ;-]
It's actually more spoiler if everybody tells them not to watch the intro, because then they know, something, most probably from the credits, might be telling something. Which is actually a spoiler itself, since there are not many actors that could re-appear.
Most people will not even realize that name, many don't even know the actors name. Those seeing AND understanding it will most likely just think of a flashback, which always can happen. And almost everybody will have forgotten it by the end of the episode, especially after the Maneo Espi..splash scene.
I really wish people would stop with that nonsence of warning reactors about the 3x7 opening.
Excited to hear you still have a strong desire to react to Black Sails. Maybe that can be The Expanse's replacement when you finish!!!
Simple (spoiler-free) clarifications/comments:
- yes, Chrisjen is the new secretary general. You’re not the only one who wasn’t sure, but it’s pretty straight-across: she was third in line behind Gillis and Errinwright, so the position is now hers. Besides, she was doing a “my fellow Earthicans” address. Felt pretty spelled-out.
- (redacted)
- Claes Ashford. That not a clarification, just hyped. David Straithairn is great (if you haven’t, watch the film “Good Night and Good Luck”. Highly recommend it!)
- RIP Maneo, humanity’s first envoy into the unknown. Speeding dick-first and drunk on his own supply (so to speak). Frankly a too-honest representative of our species. But that delta-v will get ya. Incidentally, achieving impossible delta-v is the protomocule’s best trick; it also managed to fly Eros around like a paper plane. It’s got some hacks for inertia and velocity.
Your 2nd point is a spoiler. Edit you comment pls.
Let the reactors find out things by them own. No need to spoon-feed them, really. We're all here to watch them theorize, speculate and finally get their answers when the showmakers decided it's the right time.
@@madux42agreed. Let the show answer questions. It will.
@@madux42 I see your point, although I disagree on it. Regardless, I’d still edit my comment out an abundance of caution - if editing ever worked on this device. But nothing happens when I click edit. It’s a long-running YT bug. Need my laptop or pc for that, which I don’t have with me, so it’ll have wait.
@@ferchrissakes sorry man but #2 is 100% spoiler. Let the Reactor find that out on their own since THE SHOW will answer that question down the road. #2 here is no different than the other Eager Beaver dropping info about Holden never seeing Miller with the hat. THE SHOW answers that question....down the line. There's zero need to tell the Reactor this info other than this odd need to be the one to raise their hand and say, "Ooooh look what info I have to drop to you reactor!!!"
@@madux42 AGREED! It's puzzling how Eager Beavers (here and on Patreon) just can't help themselves. This odd need to be the one to guide the Reactor instead of letting THE SHOW do that. The Expanse is pretty damn good for answering all the questions that folks have or confusion. Why folks in the comments feel the need to do that BEFORE the show does it itself is mind boggling and well beyond my understanding.
Has to be some mental thing, some attention deal, the need to feel special as the self appointed guide for the various reactors. The Miller Hat one I've seen now every single time a reactor gets to this episode (a spoiler from another Eager Beaver).
When I first watched this episode, what Melba did made me think of those stories of adreneline-fueled moms who pull crashed cars off of their kids, and only realize they dislocated their shoulders later, when the panic buzz wears off; the way she collapsed afterwards, especially, seemed to tally with that.
Considering that Holden was made in the mold of a classic D&D paladin, I suspect that Melba was partially inspired by berserkers / raging barbarians.
This is probably a good time to mention that the books are a trilogy of trilogies. Each one both self contained and adding to the whole. So this is the climax of the first arc and also when the show got canceled by SyFy. Next season is the start of a new trilogy, financed by Amazon. The show ends (so far) at the conclusion of that arc.
This stuff happening mid season is why I am never sure what happened when on the Expanse.
There are a few later whole season arcs I am more sure about.
This episode is like a million moods in a killer cocktail! And maybe the worst cliffhanger in the series? Hard to say honestly XD
Our favorite detective has returned. What case is he solving this time?
Note how the Ring looked different until Maneo attempted to slingshot through it at great speed. And the second he did, something somehow suddenly and instantly slowed his slingshot racer ship to an almost full stop. The resulting extreme delta-V (change in velocity) then caused all the organic matter splatter inside Maneo's ship. May he rest in peace. He found his fame, just not entirely the way he imagined it. 😉
Hold those thoughts! heh heh
Great analysis. It will all be explained. But the protomolecule is not sentient.
Space jellyfish?
Ummmmm the correct term is "Hanar". Tysm.
So many new questions, so few answers… enjoy the uncertainty man. Cause everyone of us here in the comments would love to go back to having a couple seasons still to go.
2:33 no it stands for change in velocity just ask poor Maneo
let's gooooo
It feels like a season premier because it's the beginning of the third book. It is my favourite book of the series, but not my favourite season (or sub-season) of the show. It's not so much that it's worse than the book (though it did suffer for having to be stuffed into the last three quarters of a season), but more that the show gets better.
The show got cancelled on syfy, so this BOOK story is only half this season, so it'll go fast! instead of the 1 1/2 season per book. But don't worry, it is still very good, and we barely feel like they missed elements. I've read the book, and they expand on some plot points. but all the key parts are here (+ added tv show stuff) if i recall correctly.
Book 3 being only half a season has nothing to do with the cancellation, I really wonder where this urban legend comes from.
In fact, it was planned from the beginning to end the story of the first 3 books with season 3.
@@madux42 Ok, thanks for clarifying, I just assumed they made it much shorter because they had to finish it, and not leave fans hanging in an half story. (in case they dont come back)
@@theKonfusion Yeah you can read this quite often in comments. The thing is, that wouldn't really be possible. Seasons and the scripts are produced over a year before they are aired, and the cancellation came after half of the episodes were already aired. You can not change stuff like that anymore at that point, that's not how it works.
Also, both writers and the showrunner said in several interviews that it was planned like this from the beginning. They told the story of the first 3 books (which is somehow one arc) in the first 3 seasons, but not 1 book = 1 season because they shifted some events and character's introductions for storytelling reasons.
The show was definitely made to be binge-able, to watch at your own pace. Seasons are just artificial pause points and if you disregard them you don't have to write filler episodes or rearrange the story as much. The Expanse still did have to fit into some kind of format but they were able to be more faithful to the books and give certain plotlines the time needed to play out. This season though...there was no contract for any more seasons so they will wrap up book 3's storyline by the end of this season. It's a bit rushed but they did a decent job of it anyway. Lucky for us that it was picked up and continued.
Part of the reason for the mid-season shift to Book Three was the showrunner's awareness that SyFy would be canceling the show at the end of the third season. It is a testament to the show and its fans that they were able to convince Jeff Bezos to pick the show up after it was canceled by SyFy.
It was closer that many people know. Alcorn was only days away from striking the sets when Bezos made his announcement.
@@kirkdarling4120 Wow I never knew that. So they would have had to rebuild everything again it sounds like. 🤔
"Part of the reason for the mid-season shift to Book Three was the showrunner's awareness that SyFy would be canceling the show at the end of the third season" - Incorrect, the showrunner Naren Shankar has never stated that in interviews. Instead he said that they always intended to end season 3 there. He also said he would have found it unsatisfying if the show had ended there.
I wonder where this urban legend comes from.
Actually, the writers and the showrunner said repeatedly, that they always had planned to finish book 3 with season 3. What they actually did is telling the story of the first 3 books in 3 seasons, with some shifting of events and character introductions here and there.
Since there are a bunch of ninnies who consider chunks of exposition that NEVER APPEAR IN THE SHOW to be spoilers, I'll simply stop commenting at all. Cheers to the algorithm.
I greatly disagree with whomever has said the first three seasons were the build up to the story.
I feel like the first three were the story.
Technically the first three seasons/books are a trilogy. The second 3 seasons/books are a second trilogy and the final 3 books are the trilogy that completes our characters story.
for the next few episodes you should skip the intro.
I also can't wait for you to watch Black Sails! In the meantime, this show is near perfect television 🩵
