  • The ancient cathedral of Salisbury houses one of Britain's most unusual art treasures. This engraved glass prism (the Rex Prism) was made by Sir Laurence Whistler as a memorial to his artist brother Rex who lived in the cathedral close and was killed in the 2nd World War. Partial images engraved near the prism edges are completed by total internal reflection and become visible through the opposing faces as the prism rotates. The result is a succession of spectral images depicting scenes in and around the cathedral.

Lawrence must have truly loved his brother and what a lose to the art world. A beautiful tribute to him and a everlasting memorial. The prism is a must see for any Rex Whistler follower. The music is so fitting of the piece with the birds flying around the spire.

I was just looking at a house for sale in Devon which has 2 windows which were engraved by Laurence Whistler as he stayed there often...amazingly I followed the trail here as I was aware of Rex Whistler who designed the artwork in the Whistler Room at Mottisfont Abbey, Hampshire...and Salisbury Cathedral is a favourite haunt of ours. This is a wonderful tribute. Only wish I lived in the house with the incredibly beautiful engraved windows...hey ho.

This is a truly wonderful piece of film-making, and the music and lyrics so apt once I found them on the web!

Worthy and beautiful memorial for Rex Whistler, who was a great artist killed in action in Normandy 1944 - desperately sad loss for the Nation and the World.

I am H. N. McMurray and I have lost control of this, my own video (uploaded when RUclips was an independent venture) because, despite repeated requests, Google (the current owners) have refused to grant me author's log-on rights. "Do no evil".
